Shenmue II is still my absolute favorite game ever made. No game world before or since has seemed as real as Hong Kong did in 2.

I always thought the original was merely okay until I played the undubbed version. The originals terrible dub lets it down, it's all about immersing yourself in the experience and the world but the shitty voices kept dragging me out of it.

It's a great game but I cannot recommend that new players play the undub version enough. And make sure you play the Dreamcast version of 2 over the Xbox version for the same reason.

I loved the Xbox version, it's playable on the 360 for convenience, and it's very affordable. For NA players it's way easier to get the Xbox version. If you didn't mind the VA in the first game, you won't mind it in II. I think not understanding anything would pull me out of the experience more than some bad VA.

not recently, nut I have had my fair share of crashes over the years with different emulators.
unfortunately its not perfect, sega pc ports when???
what was the crash and what emulator / game version are you using?
it can be very annoying to crash as you only save once per day, resume files are corrupted if you crash and save states would cause a hang on demul.
the slow pace of the game means you can enjoy alot of content, crash and have to start over from a while back and you will not want to enjoy the same progression pace.

full screen and tabbing away or clicking another monitor used to be problematic, so i play windowed stretched.

please give some detail about the crash!

>>2877318
the volume levels are weird and tracks do not fade in and mix properly, even worse so without DSP. SFX are generally too loud anyway.
why no DSP love?

It's not like I'm saying something controversial. If this is your first Shenmue thread you'll see a lot of opinions are divided on which is the better game, which isn't to say that Shenmue 2 is bad, of course not, they're both excellent games, I just prefer the first one.
One thing that is easy to point out is that they're both very different games in terms of the tone of story and environment.
The first one is more grounded and the overall environment is more dense with detail while in the second one they tried to expand the scope of the game, and by increasing the scope the detail gets lost in a lot of areas (it almost feels like cheating when they copy paste the apartment buildings, floors and layouts). The thing I really loved about Shenmue 1 the most was how your house was packed to the brim with lot's of stuff to explore and drawers to open and a lot of shit to find out, while the second one the exploration is more macro instead of micro. In Shenmue 1 you explore tight spots while in 2 you explore bigger areas (just putting it bluntly, because obviously there are exceptions). I feel like S1 feels more downbeat and relaxed in your hometown with your loved ones, while S2 they're ramping things up and it feels way more like you leaving the nest on a big adventure and discovering the world.
In the end I like how both games are different, and I definitely wouldn't want S2 to be the same thing as 1, but when I really boil it down I have to say I prefer 1. I hope 3 does something different and bold as well instead of just playing it safe with the rules established by its predecessors.

GTA? Yakuza?

It certainly is a slow burner, you need a keen eye to appreciate the subtle nuances and attention to detail that was made, its like fine art or fine wine, some people get more enjoyment from 9gag meem pictures and a bottle of cheap vodka.

Theres lots of moral stories and life lessons in the debths of this interactive B-movie that are not effortlessly presented to the player for instant gratification, as I'm sure you are used to.

Thats exactly what shenmue is not... and by DESIGN
Atmosphere and plot is the main focus in Shenmue
its not designed to be an intense action rpg with dynasty warriors style fights, karaoke bar QTE, hostess clubs and money making.

not the game for you, as many others dont understand nor appriciate the setting and style.

Got a GDEMU a while back, was recently able to pick up a capture card with VGA in for recording Dreamcast gameplay at 640x480.

Gonna be recording my first playthrough of Shenmue and Shenmue II relatively soon. I grabbed .gdis of the European version of both games so I could carry my save over.

Kinda dumb that I've had a Dreamcast for so long but have never made a "serious" (as in, more than starting the game then spending half an hour playing Hang On at the arcade and then quitting) attempt at the system's most defining game.

you wont be able to convert your save to xbox format and then... well maybe but i fukcing doubt it and im sure it would be no end of hassle im 99% sure you cant.

>xbox shen2
gross. its english dubbed you know?

when you save carry over you start shenmue 2 with everything you collected in shenmue 1 like all the capsle toys, money, move scrolls, and importantly the skill level of the moves you have practised and trained for.
probably something else i forgot but i just woke up zzzz

yes some smart guys took the japanese audio and repacked it into the PAL rom and put in the original coke vending machine too haha

1000000 times better than the english, you can carry your save over to the PAL shenmue 2, which is jp audio en sub anyway on the DC
only the xbox was english dubbed.

if you have been using a PAL rom already you can just load your save you're using

if you have been using the US rom, you may have to try and convert the save

I have a youtube account but I'm not a "youtuber" I promise. I just have some uploads of stupid shit to show my friends. The most "popular" video I have is 38 second long no commentary footage from an aquarium game that has less than 7,700 views.

I don't mind people who talk during gameplay if they have something interesting to say about what is going on, but what really chaps my ass (especially on /vr/ game videos) is people who think that they have to be talking the entire goddamn time. If you can skip anywhere in your video and hear your voice within half a second than you're fucking up. It can be fun to hear people's reactions when they're playing a game and something happens (especially if it's a game you've already played and know what is coming up), but shut the fuck up already with the stupid nonsensical "hilarious" jokes youtube, Jesus.

Thank you for the link, I'll definitely be playing the undub version of 1 so that I can have better continuity between both games.

That game honestly kinda sucks. Took several hours just to finally fight someone with the 'revolutionary' combat system, and it ends in like two button presses. Then you're back to looking for people who know sailors who know a guy who might have seen someone who knows where the guy who is affiliated with a low level worker for lan di. All of this is made ebb worse by TERRIBLE controls.

GDI is a 1:1 rip of a dreamcast image disk
CDI is a readable format usually compresses or stripped of data to make it fit on a 80min disk

what was the original rom you used and what is the rom you are trying to use ?

GDI wont be split, that is disk 1,2 and 3 in the link

the pro method is to use variable pressure on the trigger to run/walk and use d-pad just for turning left right or pressing down once to 180

the emphasis was to use the 360 analouge to look around the environment, which would have been restricted with the d-pad.
its by deisgn.
its FREE

what did you expect?
its slow burn by design, to fight lan-di after the intro?
it was probably considered.

>to fight lan-di after the intro?
This is pretty much how modern games now start. Then you'll get either a flashback for the rest of the story, or will have to come back later to fight a more powerful version of your foe.
Shenmue isn't one of these games. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Meh. Right trigger to run/walk. Dpad to turn. Diagonals on dpad control how sharp you turn. Takes a bit of time getting used to (even back then), but it's not that bad, it's actually rather precise.

1 starts really slow. Find blacksuits, find black cars, find tatoos, find sailors, later find warehouse, find warehouse number 8, find the REAL warehouse number 8. Just from the 2nd disc it starts to pick up, but even there you are finding clues like a sort of detective.
The thing about 1 it's about your hometown, knowing the mc, with characters with daily routines and tons of hidden stuff or sidequests at certain times. 2 expands the world with more freedoom, more things to do, hidden stuff too but with a more adventure feel.
And Yu warned from the beginning this would be at least16 chapters, so 4 or 5 games long

I got in my 1st playthrough by luck and because I trained a lot, my friend didn't knew that, he thought it was one those fights you just cant win. But that is hard because arcade is small as hell for a fighting place.

I know what you mean, but after that great opening it does get slow. The first time you played 1 you will be questioning everyone in the town and they don't know shit, until someone actually does and then you start questioning other things and repeat. And the worse thing is when you have to wait for a certain time in the day to meet someone or a store to open to make some questions, something that they fixed in 2.
I didn't mind the slow progression because I was looking for things hidden in the house, training, playing in the arcades, but I can understand why some didn't enjoyed 1 as much.

completely agree.
its the sudden jar from their preconceived misconception to the actual game design is so shocking they are disgusted and unable to adapt and see what the game for what it really is.

they play the game with the mentality
>ok where the action?
>when is the next fight?
>why is nothing telling me where to go?
>this is boring *quits*

and never feel and enjoy the game playing how the developers intended.

oh well
