2870374 No.2870374 [Reply] [Original]

My new years resolution is to leave 4chan. What are some unmissable retro games that I'll never be able to ask you about again? All genres except rpg, obscure and known games, doesn't matter.

>> No.2870386

>>2870374
Nothing is ever unmissable because tastes vary so much. Just download rom dumps and then you'll have nearly a life time of games to discover and enjoy.

Trust me, the fun of clicking on some random title you've never heard of and discovering a really fun game is a better feeling than you will ever get out of recommendation threads.

Bye.

I've stuck with /vr/ from the beginning and the post quality as of late is astonishingly bad. I haven't been on 4chan as long as other Anons ITT but I feel it's time for me to migrate somewhere else for better retro vidya discussion as well. Problem is, I haven't participated in any forums/image boards besides 4chan (and GameFaqs when I was in high school) so I don't really know where to go from here.

As mentioned in >>2871475, I think making a small forum and/or IRC channel with more dedicated moderation would be the best alternative... But, from my experience, trying to coordinate people like this on 4chan is kind of impossible, so I guess I'll stick around...

I guess I never felt that way because I never looked to 4chan for serious discussion. It's always been a very loose and silly site no matter what board you're on.

I started coming here in '05 and even then it had a reputation. I don't understand at all how anyone comes to 4chan with the expectation that it's going be a a well regulated forum for serious discussions.

If you really want to talk to a lot of fellow older people talking seriously about games I can say from personal experience the Gamers With Jobs forums are pretty great and very friendly.

Which isn't to say don't come to 4chan if you like it. But coming to 4chan and expecting it not to be 4chan will only bring disappointment.

I have the same addictions which is why I think it's time to stop already. I've wasted too much of my life here. Also chans are generally negative places which are plain toxic for the mind, body and soul. It's like when sweeney asks Derek in American history x: "has anything you've done made your life better?" I can say without doubt 4chan has made my outlook on life far worse and the few shiny pebbles I've come across while wading in a sea of shit just aren't worth it. It's really too bad you can't find humour like this anywhere else but it's still ultimately a ridiculous waste of time. You could be doing much better things instead.

Of course there are people that can manage their time better and can stop in and out of 4chan for brief intervals during the day. Im not one of those people. Im so much more productive and irl sociable when I don't have access to this place. For me 4chan is a complete and utter life-suck and I should really move on already.

Not him but I guess I understand how you feel, I've been here since 2006 and I agree with the general feeling that the "golden age" of 4chan is already gone, I'd give a kidney if that meant to return to the 2006>2008 days, but that isn't possible, 4chan is no different from Facebook or the average forum drivel on average nowadays, only with worse or non-existent moderation.

That said, I've had some good experiences and met some great people here, I'm even currently working with a few guys from /m/ on a small project we'd like to release and they're all really swell guys with a lot of passion and a good general outlook when it comes to work and life.

I can see your problem because I too had the same one and occasionally fall back into it, but that's the problem of all addictions. I can't blame you for not wanting to see the cesspool of shitposting and general human debris that this place has turned into, it pains me too, even during the worst days back when 4chan was still young and relatively unknown we wouldn't get such low quality and aggressive shitposting.

In any case, if you're up for making a small IRC groups for oldfags who want to discuss things like normal human beings I'd be up for it, I too only go on a few stable threads on /m/ and /vr/ nowadays, the rest of the 4chan is unbrowsable garbage, as much as it pains me to say so.

IRC is more chatroomy, I was thinking more along the lines of a forum with stored posts that people can browse through whenever. I don't think there'd really be enough traffic for any kind of chat thing to be worth doing.

A standard forum requires registration and all that garbage so it's probably off the table as well. Right? Serious question here, if I started up a forum for people here to escape the shitposting how many of you would come?

Would it be better to just make a board on eight-chan? I never visit that toxic site, but I know it's easy to make your own image board there and control moderation yourself. Everything that normally goes on in that site could just be a bannable offense, so it doesn't seep over. That way there's no registration, everyone can stay anonymous, and the interface is the same as this place. So, this board but with less traffic and shitposting gets you banned.

Like, "I didn't like Sonic CD because [reasons]" is fine, but "Sonic CD sucks and you faggots only like it because of nostalgia" gets a ban.

Like I said thered need to be a rules thread up to talk about stuff, and it'd probably be good for posts someone got banned for to stay up with the red text under them instead of just getting deleted, so people can call out a mod for acting too much like Hitler if that becomes an issue.

>NotCurrentGen
Would just get the thing flooded with Call of Duty and Halo. Keep in mind that we're in the eighth gen right now and the sixth gen officially only ended /two-and-a-half years ago/ while the fifth gen (PSX, N64 etc) officially ended a decade ago. Special exemptions for GBA and DC, perhaps. I don't like them, but DC had too short a life and GBA is full of lots of shovelware and what games it does have fit more in the spirit of retro if not retro proper.
See, a generation lasts an average of about twelve years with the next gen popping up about half way through the last one. For example, the fifth gen debuted in 1993 and ended in 2006 with the sixth gen debuting in 1999. The eighth gen debuted in 2012 and can be expected to continue until around 2024. With the debut of the ninth gen, presumably sometime around 2018, the sixth gen would be ripe for discussion.
Thoughts?

wtf, reddit? If you are going to do this please do ANY OTHER option.

Reddit is simply not a forum. Period. It is an upvoting machine, originally designed to bring interesting links to the top. The major problems are:

1) You can't find new replies in a thread automatically (unless they are direct replies to something you wrote)

2) Submitted threads are basically programmed to sink like a stone after 24 hours.

No it isn't. YouTube comment threads are usually worse. Prissy, pissy, groupthinky places like Reddit and MetaFilter are sometimes worse. Yahoo! Answers is certainly worse.

The only good, popular forum is StackExchange, as far as I know. Every other one is fatally flawed, though still useful in some ways. Other than that, for a forum to be really good, it has to be small enough to have a good internal culture. Or else it has to rely on some future technology/technique/social system that hasn't been developed yet.

>> No.2875026

>>2871553

The niche communities on Reddit tend to be bad too, except maybe if they're REALLY small. There's always some idiot wave of lurkers ready to downvote a post into hiddenness because it's abrasive and correct and relevant instead of being pleasant. (But pleasant posts are accepted regardless of correctness, relevance, or aesthetic value.)

On this note: I've female friends who enjoy MMOs quite a lot and have since the 90s. Now, with the ability to speak to one another using your own voice, these friends are forced to remain silent specifically because of fuckwits like >>2878019. They don't have to mention that they're women because if they so much as speak, they're outed as vagina-having non-males and derail the game with a third the userbase going "ASL? ASL? ASL?" another third hurling insults at them for being attention-seeking women and the final third white-knighting.
So it's not the women who ruin gaming communities, it's the misogynists like >>2878019 who do.

So long as a person keeps mostly on the community topic, I couldn't give less of a fuck, assuming I've any at all to give in the first place, if they happen to mention in passing that s/he

I'm not going to deny that using voice chat ingame has the ability to distract everyone, and that's for the exact reason I brought up. Any mention of a female enjoying a male-centric hobby is going to be met with lots of attention. You'd know that had you bothered reading what I was posting instead of jumping to conclusions and painting me in a bad light. Case in point:

>It's not women who ruin game communities

When did I ever say that? You're the bigot casting shade here, not me.

Moving on, if you applied that logic to what I was actually talking about, you'd realise how none of that issue applies to being on an imageboard. Moreover, voice chat isn't in any retro game I could think of save for Alien Front Online, so you're clearly just bringing up an unrelated problem and painting me as a misogynist because of it. You don't even know me or how I act online. I could be female for all you know.

Put it this way: there are women that are gamers, and there are gamers that are women. That distinction is entirely what my argument hinges on, I don't care what chromosomes you have so long as you're contributing (and keeping your personal life out of it).

>People who actually have or had things going on in their lives generally mention or allude to those things in conversations, regardless of topic.

Yes, a "brown poster", as it were. There's no reason to bring that stuff up as it's not related to the topic at hand; if you're mentioning those kind of things unwarranted, you should consider rewording your post so you're staying on topic and not risking a derailment. Ignoring this sentiment is ignorant of the userbase and disrespectful towards the original poster, assuming their thread topic hasn't already been answered.

Your stance on how a topic doesn't need to be followed underlines your lack of understanding of why this place exists in the first place. We're not here to talk about our lives. If anything, we're here to get away from them.

This image always cracks me up because all it ever really shows is what an anti social retard the person posting it is. They see anyone who isn't a complete social retard as some sort of casual "dude bro".

Not video games, but we used to have a guy exactly like this in our PnP roleplaying club. One of our mutual drawing friends (a girl *gasp*) decided to try it out. Well, "Carl" as we will call him didn't like that saying she would make it "too roleplaying" focused.

Then he rolled a paladin, a literal White Knight and tried to court her in-game even to the point of pointing out that with his 18 charisma she should be more interested in him than she was role-playing.

Naturally she got creeped out, we all got pissed at him for turning off what what otherwise a cool player and he quit the group. Since he was the ride for another key member, that was the end of that campaign. Though I started a long running Star Wars one out of the ashes so all was good.

The kicker though? To this day he insists that it was her coming that ruined the group. Not him acting like a giant asshole retard over it, but the fact that she was a girl. If Carl didn't write that hilarious comic, I'm sure it was one of his brothers in spergitude.

You're treating "online" communities like they're all the same, they're not. Everything in that comic has happened, countless times, on multiple forums. You're just insulted by the concept of not being a "core" member, as you've probably been here for a while. Time doesn't justify your stance, valid argumentation does. You've done nothing of the sort.

Again, you're proving my point. You slowly show posters that you can get away with posting retarded emoticons and not staying on topic, so more people do it as a "joke" when in reality you're being disrespectful to the OP's topic at hand.

It's not about games, is it? You're complaining that others are mentioning X, Y and Z in passing (and those are the key words here: "in passing"), but look who's really derailing the board.

It's not the poster who says "You know, my wife/husband/daughter/son/parakeet [yadda yadda yadda minor details about personal life] but I really love Castlevania III, though I think they're all pretty good." It's not the poster who replies "Well, pretty good except the Metroidvanias. I know it's a polarising topic, but I just never got into the RPGifying of the series." or even the one who says "Daughter, eh? Pics. Now."

The first poster only mentioned unrelated things in passing. The first replier ignored that point, instead addressing the on-topic part of the post. The third replier is completely off-topic, posts no controversial opinion and is obviously joking so will therefore likely go ignored.

None of them derail the thread.

So who does?

I'll tell ya: it's the one who flips out that someone dared to mention a wife/husband/daughter/son/parakeet and continuously soapboxes at every opportunity that no one should ever so much as mention his/her wife/husband/daughter/son/parakeet on an anonymous board. Such as you're doing.

No matter what more you say now, you'd only further prove my point. No matter what reply, what opinion, what silly and trivial matter you'd want to address, you're only proving to the rest of us that you are a bloodless ghoul, here to destroy the board with your incessant tantrums and/or diatribes.

You're the problem. Not the poster who mentions something off topic in passing. You.

You proved MY point. You actually think saying stuff like "I want to see pictures of your daughter" on a retro gaming board is acceptable. You *actually* said that. Can we have a modicum of intellectual honesty here?

You've dodged the same question four times now and ignored another, related question, 'why are you dodging the question?' The answer to which is 'because the answer is inconvenient to the premise I've presented and refusing to answer it is the only course of action I can take without damaging my argument or admitting I'm wrong.'

It was said that the notion that an unrelated post would go ignored is merely 'theoretical' in >>2878479, yet acknowledged that this 'theoretical' incident does indeed happen in that very same post. We need do no more than look at all the unanswered posts and comments ITT to see that it's quite common that unrelated posts do indeed go ignored and, therefore, can't do any damage to a thread or board. So now, we can see that unrelated posts and minor details shared in passing during the course of conversation more-often-than-not go unaddressed and are therefore not disruptive to the thread or board.

That leaves only option two. We can now see that the guy who makes dozens upon dozens of posts chastising others for mentioning minor details in passing is more disruptive to threads and boards than the guy who posts a barely relevant (or entirely irrelevant) thing. Ergo, you're the problem. Not them. Not us. Not the other guys. You. If you love /vr/ so much, the best thing you can do for it is to not post here again until you can understand how to do so without being disruptive.

>>2879252

>>2879308
Because you're dodging my assertion with an unrelated question. It doesn't fucking matter who's more disruptive by this point.

You want an answer? It's the person that posts more. Why did I post more? Because I'm actually getting responses. It's not relevant to the discussion at hand and the fact you think that means anything underlines how out of place in our discussion you are. Do you even know what we were arguing about? What my core argument was? I'd bet money that you don't.

>unrelated posts go ignored
Like my unrelated post, right? Idiot.

I don't think you understand what I mean by "disruptive". I don't mean "derailing a thread", this thread reached the end of the line a while ago; OP got their answer, and nobody was barred from posting on topic. It's you idiots that addressed my statement, and because of that we're all responsible for derailing the thread. What I meant by "disruptive" is the behaviour your "intellectual honesty" brings, specifically, dumbasses that didn't read the thread and jumping in the middle of the conversation without fully understanding both sides of the argument. People see this "call out culture" bullshit and think it's perfectly fine to get in the middle of conversations that weren't theirs, and it's not. That is exactly why I started shitting up the thread, I was responding to three people at once. Three people that clearly had no clue what they were talking about.

Only difference is, my "unrelated statement" was actually adding to why someone would want to leave, and >>2879252 was so incredibly kind as to misunderstand the meaning of my statement, leading to the shitflinging that occurred.

You're drawing false positives. Lurk moar.

Let me put it this way, had there been to off-topic mention in the OP (I'm leaving 4chan!!1) this conversation wouldn't have happened. It just would have been another recommendation thread, the OP would have gotten his answer just like in this thread, and it would have 404'd like it should have.

I am over 18. I'm 19, in fact.

You're misunderstanding what I meant. I'm not trying to shift blame, quite the opposite. My assertion is that we are *all* to blame, maybe not the people who didn't spark a frivolous debate as much as myself and that SJW dolt that was either wilfully ignorant or too plain dumb to understand the statement I was trying t o make, but we're all to blame regardless.

So again. If OP hadn't made an off-handed statement about his leaving due to the declining quality of posting, I and others wouldn't have agreed. And again, that SJW lady wouldn't have misunderstood me and strawmanned my argumentation to the point of parody.

Again. We are all to blame. Not just some specific group or person, not some specific topic that caused it, us. Us and our willingness to not entirely post on topic. That is the problem with /vr/.

Yes, I do. Minor details allows possibilities for topic derailment, which is exactly what happened here. You somehow managed to miss the point and agree with me at the same time. Probably why you're avoiding a genuine attempt at disproving me.

>"...if you've made your argument so well..."
Right, that argument you made. Care to post it again? I must have missed it. Unless you're referring to the "You did it too so it's entirely your fault" thing? Better yet, let me try to simplify. Minor details were mentioned in the OP, the thread eventually derailed because of it. Everyone is at fault, OP, myself, the SJW shitposter, and the preceding and following funposters.

You think funposting is harmless, and I don't. I've tried to explain why it isn't harmless (in this very reply, no less), but you sidestep that explanation by claiming that because I've added anecdotal statements *specifically only in this thread because I was coaxed to*, it invalidates my argument and doesn't require disproving. Hopefully you understand why that's intellectually dishonest.

How about actually trying to reply instead of attempting to and failing at summarizing what happened in the thread? Because all you're doing is misrepresenting my argument to yourself and puffing your chest out like you know what you're talking about.

I honestly don't think anyone who thinks all modern gaming sucks actually like video games in general. You have a nostalgia for one specific era, like someone who only likes 70's era rock as their music.

The same way they're not really fans of music in general, you're not a fan of games in general. Which is fine, but many of us here like all manner of games. And you have a tendency to imply you are a fan of gaming in general.

Even on a classic rock section of a music forum, although they would like that music a lot most of the people who go there would probably like other kinds of music as well. Even there someone trying to claim that absolutely all modern music is garbage would be rare.

Lets try to produce something lasting out of this thread. Are there other retro communities worth visiting? What about the idea of starting a new one somewhere?

The thing is, even if another place doesn't fully replace /vr/, a nicer place would make me happier, and feel less like I'm wasting time inbetween interesting posts. It doesn't matter if its a new place or an existing place that we all go to...

>> No.2885226

>>2884729

There are plenty of other retro communities like NintendoAge, DigitPress, RacketBoy, HG101, Assemblergames, FamicomWorld, Neo-Geo... Some others that aren't specifically focused on retro but share a lot of overlap like the shmups (system11) forum, Talking Time, RPGCodex, other megaforums like GameFAQs that have a lot of retro discussion. They all have their problems, and the limitations of traditional forums with account systems though.

There's really not much you can do. It's hard enough to get people to move to one place, but then you run into the problem of having board politics, identities making social dynamics and discussion a lot more restrained, etc. You can try starting up something, maybe it'll take off but what happens is they usually die after a few weeks/months and everyone comes back. 4ch and 8ch work for now, even if they're not ideal.
