Which final fantasy is the best?

I'll just rank what I played all the way through.

VII > X > VI > XII

Got to beat some more of course. Next few will most likely be FF VIII, IX and II (snes version so FFIV I guess).

>> No.2874365

I'm the only person in the whole world who genuinely thinks that VIII was the best.

>> No.2874379

My favorite is VI, followed by IX, mostly because of the story and the characters, since neither have the most complex gameplay out of the FF games. I've tried VII, VIII and IV, but they didn't appeal to me for various reasons.

Magiteck Star Wars beats shit tier island asian country mythos. X's only redeeming quality is that Tidus is slightly less annoying than Vaan.

Yeah, definitely. I don't understand why so many people take issue in twelve - it's way better than ten in terms of gameplay, story and everything.

Also:

FF6>FF8>FF7>FF9>FF5>FF3>FF2>FF4

Every Final Fantasy game was great (except for FF4). This order may change for me over time, as I often replay them (except for FF4).

What I honestly want to know is how anyone can rate VIII over VII. I played them both for the first time earlier this year, and 8 felt like a step backwards from 7 in almost every regard; it's like they chose to focus on 7's absolute worst aspects with the sole exception being the graphics. At least when people say 9 is better I can (sort of) understand where they're coming from.

>lol FF8 sux because junctions

The game makes more than one attempt to explain the system to you. It's not Square's fault that you either didn't pay attention or were too dense to process the information. My 16-year-old self had no difficulty understanding the game when it was released.

Perhaps more depressing, I think Square Japan's marketing team looks at games like this and totally misunderstands why people disliked them. "Oh, here we have this 30-year-old character Laguna, and angst teenage boys can't identify with a mature character like that. THAT must be why so many fans hate this game! Welp, better make sure all future protagonists are whiny, androgynous 15-year-old faggots!"

I dunno what problem people keep finding with those games. When I was younger I had the most fun trying to break the battle systems and plowing through the game at my own pace because I liked the graphics and the music a lot. Each game had their own way to let you become powerful enough without much grinding. I remember the All materia trick in FF7 in particular, but the earlier games had the peninsulas and later ones had more elaborate combat mechanics which could be exploited right if you learned them well enough. The stories were really neat too. Love all the games besides 13 onwards, favorite is either 4 or 7.

I seriously just can't comprehend how, even if another FF was your first there's just no way the case could be made for any of others
There is clear and definitive line between those and the rest.
6 was the culmination of the sprite era FF where they put everything they learned/had into creating a masterpiece of art direction/music/graphics/gameplay/story/characters/villian, just everything. It lead fans of the series/genre to anticipate the next entry more than any other.
7 was practically single handedly responsible for bringing RPGs mainstream with it's incredible scale and "next level" feeling. It was basically the Star Wars of gaming where more than just the nerds started to pay attention and be captured by the epic nature of the production/plot/worldbuilding.

Other FFs are good, some are really good. But there's simply nothing that they can bring to the table that can compete with what 6/7 did. None have a better story, none have better realized characters or villians, none did anything else unique that overshadows them in any way.

By the content of your posts you really don't seem someone who has any idea of game design and actual knowledge of the genre and series, I even doubt you actually played all games considering both your points on FFIV and VII and the fact that somehow even FFII, a game that not only pioneered a completely new system but was the forefather of the modern FF model and introduced a lot of archetypes goes unmentioned when you say that no other title did anything unique and both FFVI and FFVII use an almost identical design model.

It just wasn't that interesting to me when I played it after I've played various other JRPG's. The first portion of the game was on rails, the second part felt like a watered down SaGa game.
>7 was practically single handedly responsible for bringing RPGs mainstream with it's incredible scale and "next level" feeling. It was basically the Star Wars of gaming where more than just the nerds started to pay attention and be captured by the epic nature of the production/plot/worldbuilding.
Doesn't make it the best in its series or genre. Games can drag on as well. Final Fantasy VII was the first one I played and I never finished it due to it dragging on, and apparently I was close to the end as well in the crater maze. This was probably about fifteen or so years ago when my friend lent it to me for the PC.

Also you have to realize some people don't like games that are story heavy in the sense of text and cut scenes and would rather explore the world and see the story unfold through playing the game rather than a bunch of exposition.

I like 2.
Admittedly I only played it on the GBA, but after the... decades... of hearing nothing but bad things about it I was pleasantly surprised.
It is still one of the weaker entries, but I'd rate it above 1 and 3.

Oh, yes, if I recall correctly, they improved the battle and leveling systems and made them more playable. I didn't play it but I remember that. The game definitely needed a lot of work. I can't recall if the story was interesting at all. Isn't it about an alliance of small countries fighting an evil empire?

I think FFII is alright. Far from the worst, but it isn't the best either. Even its NES version is properly paced in which if you actually utilized your actions every battle your characters will grow strong enough to be able to overcome most challenges without grinding as long as you don't try to multi-class due to the stat up and down mechanics coupled along with the fact that leveling up a weapon and magic at once isn't an effective use of your time.

VI, VII, XII, V

Good:
IX, X, VIII, IV

Okay:
II, III, I

Not playing again for any reason:
XIII, X-2

This only assumes main entries. My favorite overall would be Tactics otherwise. Aside from XIII and it's spin-offs, the MMOs, and Dirge Of Cerberus, I can't really out and out shit on any of the series. I like some more than others, but until the last gen I've enjoyed the series as a whole.

You can't include Mystic Quest anywhere because it was specfically made with an audience who never played RPGs before in mind. It's supposed to be beginner level and it's quite a decent game if you go from there.

IMO 9 and 12
9 for story and classic gameplay
12 because i enjoyed it the most

7 was my first and I was such a fanboy for years. 8 blew my mind storywise, but was boring to play. I played 1 on the ps1, and it was kinda neat. Didn't like 2. Couldn't even play 4 or 5, just so damn boring. I just don't like 6; I feel like the only one on the planet who doesn't. Did not like 10. Hated 13. Have never played the rest.

Grinding is usually kind of a poor argument though. A lot of JRPGs don't 'require' you to grind ever.

Yes, you'll be grinding in FFVI if you want to put Ultima on all of your characters or if you want to reach the max level. But if you just want to beat the game and don't care about optional things like that you really don't have to grind.

>> No.2883143

>>2874751
Why? It just means that you're playing with a set of predefined characters whose combat roles you can pick almost entirely. VI is in principle very much about party building and party planning.

The major flaw in VI is how overpowered Ultima is and how easily you can plow through the game with an all-mage team constantly casting Ultima. But that is still a choice that's up to you. You decide what stats your characters excel in by keeping certain magicite equipped on them. You decide what spells your characters learn. You decide how you use every character. It's very much how an RPG should be.

FFIV is by far my favorite, but it has more to do with when I played it (I was 12) and the state of RPGs in the US in 1991 (almost non-existant). It was the first RPG I played with an unfolding storyline as the game progressed, it blew my mind at the time.

Lot of hate for the revised spritework. I will say the BG tiles are a bit jacked due to the increased resolution causing tiling problems. I'm conflicted on the character sprites, though. They were made by Kazuko Shibuya to better reflect her original art that the sprites were made from, but some of the anatomy just looks silly with the new sprites. Really, if they'd get rid of the bilinear filtering the sprites would probably be a little less hated.

This must be why I can waltz straight through VI and VII and unintentionally break them on the first playthrough and yet both IV and V would kill me for trying to play them in the same manner.

Your argument is retarded and belies the fact that you're not looking at the games' gameplay at anything other than a surface level. VI - and any game after it - has a completely different approach than any game before it and it's blindingly fucking obvious if you know what to look for.
