This, especially with games that were unreleased or that are now lost. Or japanese, and there are no infos on the web.

Also, if you try to find something like, for example, the first game featuring a doppleganger, and you go to Prince of Persia, you'll probably find that some early game kinda did it but in a different way and get stuck on the definition of every term.

That said, I'm cool with trying to list down as many as we can.

An idle animation isn't just something the character does after a few minutes of inactivity: it's simply the animation that plays when you stop. So if a character is motionless but you see them breathing, that's an idle animation.

At least, that's what I thought. See, this probably won't work, because there will be disagreement over the terms and disagreements can't really be worked out on anonymous boards.

Super Mario Bros 2 is the first game to have separate releases in different countries.

Did you know that they original made Super Megaman 3 they thought it would be too easy for Armenian gamers, so they got an old game that Iwata worked on called Donkey Kong Country and reworked the graphics and called released it.

African gamers didn't actually get to play the original game until it was included in the CAPCOM Arcade Collection as Legend of Zelda: The Misplace Courses, whereas Chinese gamer got to play the Brazillian version as Super Metroid AUS.

Wolfenstein 3D, probably, as far as FPS games go, seeing as both Wolf 3D and GoldenEye can't specifically say what brand of gun they're imitating.

Goldeneye guns are specifically modeled after real world guns. They didn't use the real names, but you could look at the Klobb and know it's a Scorpion, you know the PP7 is a PPK, you know the KF7 Soviet is an AK47, etc.

Wolfenstein 3D's guns are just generic sprites that aren't really based on anything. As far as I know, Goldeneye is the first FPS game in which nearly every gun is modeled after a real-world one.

>> No.2871743

>>2871741

Also, the guns were actually called by their real world names during development, but that's not what matters. What I'm asking is whether or not Goldeneye is the first game to feature primarily real-world guns, regardless of whether or not it features the actual names of the weapons.

Doom used toys and drawings as it's weapons, so that doesn't count, and the guns in Wolfenstein are generic forms of their respective weapon types as far as I know.

>whereas I would argue that's just "neutral"
This is where you are in fact, wrong. Simply because it's standard for animations that are played when no input is provided are named "idle" typically. Most games will have those sort of animated with the name "idle" in the filename, regardless of whether a wait time is involved.

>> No.2871783

What you're asking and what you're specifying are different. What you want to say is "Is GoldenEye the first game to have guns based on real-life examples?"

What you specifically just asked for was if GoldenEye was the first game to feature real-life guns, and the answer is no because it doesn't have any.

As for the first part, then again, no. Just off the top of my head, Ninja Gaiden 2 had a character using a not-Baretta.

With guns, like cars, brand endorsement is something that makes a difference.

That's really, really stretching the definition of FPS. Goldeneye got its whole body part thing from Virtua Cop which was even earlier, and it would be a big stretch to call that an FPS as well.
