It looks OK, I guess? Maybe a bit too harsh looking with the old polygons meshed with a super-sharp picture. I think the draw distance effect in the original gives it an interesting foggy feel, so I don't think it really looked bad or anything.

Turok 3 recreated the Lost Land with better lighting and better draw distance back in 2000. But it cut corners everywhere else. Everything from gutted weapon idle animations, gutted climbing animations, simplified enemy animation, and corpses fading immediately after death. (The latter is either a performance fix or Acclaim management being really paranoid about excessive violence in their games. Hard to tell.)

Anyhow, I'm hoping for a Turok 3 remaster that polishes the game up and restores cut content and that sort of thing. I really love Turok 3, but it was a blatantly rushed game with some pretty bizarre bugs, and also regressions between the betas and the final product. (Elevators should not bleed when you stab them. I'd love to know how that happened.) Also, for no apparent reason, a few scripted events were removed from the very first level, such as the old guy leading you through the tunnels with a flashlight, (hence the dialogue not making sense in the final game.) Also, the police cruiser pulling up to the barriers was removed, causing a noticable model bug where two police cruisers sit in the same spot. And also, a scene where you find an abandoned police walker with its cockpit open was removed. Looking at the rom data, it look as though Turok 3 was supposed to have a section where you drove a police walker around just before the subway level.

Also, it's interesting how Night Dive Studios are publishing System Shock 3, because some of the Turok 3 team were System Shock/Wing Commander devs from Origin.

>I heard it's based of TurokEX. So, PowerSlaveEx when?
Powerslave Ex was killed due to licensing problems. The pretty much fully functional beta files were online for a while. I have them myself. Dunno whether the MEGA links are still up, though.

This Turok is an engine port. A hybrid of the N64 and PC versions ported to a new engine. (Doom 64 EX engine. Heavily modified Doom engine, basically.)

System Shock Enhanced is still the original game engine, as far as I know. I dunno why they don't have an inverted mouse look toggle for those that want it.

IIRC the story behind Powerslave goes as following: Kaiser talked to the guy who owned the rights to game and assets so he could make a sourceport with all the stuff included. he got permission. After release of the beta Night Dive dived in and bought out the rights, then C&D Kaiser's project so they could leech money off of his work again.

Basically put these guys leeching money off of Kaiser's brilliant work and getting money they dont deserve. IDK how distribution works between them and Kaiser but they dont deserve any of it - he does.

They've been owned by a company called Classic Media. This company owned full rights and partial rights to everything from Lassie to Turok to Voltron to Mr Magoo. Dreamworks acquired them in 2012 and rebranded them Dreamworks Classics.

Anyhow, back in the day, Disney simply licensed Turok from the former company to make their Turok game. I imagine that Night Dive have done something similar.

AI was modified. Recent patch fixed the enemies being way too fast on higher difficulties.

Bear in mind stuff like AI code had to be written from scratch because this is a reverse engineered port. You can view all the AI code in the game's files and tweak it to your heart's content if you're inclined that way.

Original rights holders were fine with a non-commercial "remake" of the game, but night dive bought the rights when they found out kaiser was doing the game so they could hire him and sell it for money instead. /exactly/ what they did with Turok here, where the only thing the fans ultimately gained from it is that having access to the original source code made it possible to port the AI and some other things faithfully.

That's what they do. Not unplayable on a skill level, unplayable on an eyesore/interest level. Doesn't even look like fog, it's like a blanket draped 30 feet away constantly. And it's clear that it was done due to console limitations, it's not like it's an artistic choice.

It was both. If they reduced the detail, the fog would be gone, but they thought it suited Turok just fine to have high detail / good animations / smooth with some jungle fog for atmosphere.

That's probably not true. Rendering longer distances used to be a big issue for 3D engines. That's why Unreal was so impressive when it came out. It's likely that they were still getting used to the N64's hardware and did the best they could. I was used to playing PC games for the most part at the time, and despite the great animations, it felt a lot like a step down.

>> No.2867497

>Rendering longer distances used to be a big issue for 3D engines

Long distances used to be a big issue because visual glitches from affine texture mapping tend to become more serious the further the textures are away from the camera. Eventually software renderers became fast enough to do perspective correct texture mapping (Quake, Unreal), and hardware 3D acceleration became more common.

The N64's has hardware accelerated support for perspective-correct texture mapping much like a 3D acceleration card so rendering long distances aren't a problem.

The other thing that people forget is that fog was initially a selling point of the hardware! Accurate fog transitions require per-pixel alpha blending driven with data from the z-buffer (so that objects emerging from the fog gradually and accurately become more opaque). It was extremely hard to do something like that quickly with a software render, so the N64 was quite good at doing the 'fog' effect. The reason everybody came to hate fog was that it was overused like crazy, because it was easier to implement the fog effect than to optimize the hardware renderer for drawing lots of polygons/textures (requires good memory management).

>I was used to playing PC games for the most part at the time, and despite the great animations, it felt a lot like a step down.

That seems a little hard to believe considering that when Turok was released in early 1997, there were only two other FPS games with a true 3D engine: Quake, and Terminator Future Shock (the latter which looked pretty bad by then).

>> No.2867514

And Terminal Velocity (flight "sim", but not really. mostly a flying FPS), and Descent. But you're right, it was mostly Quake, and non 3D FPS games (Doom, Duke, Etc). They still used sprites, but I could see as far as the games resolution would allow. Also it was only a little over half a years wait til Quake 2, Unreal, and Thief.

Apparently Turoks fog wasn't to hide the distance, but to cull everything in the distance. So you're right there. If it were a big somewhat-empty room it'd probably run okay. And all in all they probably made the right choice, that animations and fancy transparent textures made it stand out at the time. But it just wasn't for me. I grew up in a humid valley, and it was too much fog for me.

>> No.2867526

>And Terminal Velocity (flight "sim", but not really. mostly a flying FPS), and Descent
Yeah, those are kinda FPS technically, but I kinda have the thing in my mind that an FPS is a person holding a gun running around instead of a vehicle flying about.

Goldeneye was released later that year and almost completely got rid of the fog (except on massive levels like Surface, and Jungle which was probably on purpose) but it was nowhere near as detailed as Turok in terms of character models and animation.

I was loving it on the original pc version, which I was playing before the remaster came out, but the resolution being so low kinda stank. Now that they've patched the respawn times to not be completely retarded, I'm loving the remaster. Might be in my top 3 games of all time.
