2861335 No.2861335 [Reply] [Original]

People always talk about their 90's childhood experiences, though you don't ever really hear of 90's parent experiences, I was a 90's parent, I was 38 in 1996, I had a 6 year old son and a 12 year old son, I tell ya watching them wrestle eachother to figure out how to ace a Donkey Kong level, Back then it was so simple, you'd buy a game and go home and play it, now you buy a game and its glitchy as fuck and you have to wait for day one patches (Batman Arkham Knight)

Nothing was more magical then watching your kid work his way through the wrapping paper of a SNES console you wrapped..

My sons now 25 and one of those annoying

Gentrification is completely different from hobbies that circulate with new age groups. This is simply the natural progression of a hobby as time goes on, where newer groups come in to reflect up on their first consoles as they get older to feel nostalgia.
By no means is this a degrading element to retro games as an invasion to the hobby. Eventually, by the time 7th gen fetuses are old enough to refer to their games as classics, we'll be in hospital beds. Just accept it. I like to expose my Gen Z nephew about the N64 and all that polygon goodness instead of getting jaded and bitter.

If you were born in the late 90s, you were 4 years old in the year 2000. The only reason you would be playing a console released in the 90s is if your parents were too poor to afford a PS2 and gave you a hand-me-down that was released when you were in diapers (or in the case of the PSX, when your parents still thought the idea of having children was repulsive).

At least that's what /pol/ would have you believe. Those people aren't even a sizable minority, and at worst, they just sit online all day and whine about shit that no one actually cares about. All you have to do is steer clear of sites like tumblr, and you'd never even know these people existed.

Meanwhile, U.S. voters are comprised primarily of conservative Christians, and lawmakers and politicians are exploiting the population's prejudices by scapegoating minority rights and immigration laws. This keeps everybody pacified so they won't notice when their tax dollars are being laundered away. Can't afford better public education? That's too bad. Nope to most of that

>Out-of-Africa has been proven to be wrong in its assumption that modern humans didn't mix with archaic humans.
Modern humans actually originated in South America, but I don't have time to get into that with you today.

>Genetic evidence that races are not equal
Humans are one of the most genetically similar species on earth because of the bottleneck. There's more variation in two given chimps of different tribes than there is in all humans. That said, I didn't say anything about equality.

>IQ studies that show races consistently have different IQ scores
For one, IQ has been seen as bullshit since the 80s' For another there are many factors other than ethnicity. Blacks from the US for example tend to be markedly different from blacks in other countries, because institutional racism can affect many factors.

>Ignoring the hundreds of other genetic differences
Again, despite visual differences, humans are all shockingly similar. Come to a country that's not fucked up and you'll see that our black people don't act like typical bottom rung people, they're just normal people.

I wouldn't quite go that way. Keeping with the subject matter of this board, we could use video games as an example.

The NES era (86-90) was different and distinct from the Atari era, however in other regards it was still very similar. Arcade games were still dominant, there were a lot of platforms, and games got tons of cross ports. Say in 1982 you'd get cross ports on the 2600, Colecovision, Apple II, Atari 800. This was still essentially the same situation in 88 but shifted to PC compatibles, Amigas, Commodore 64, NES. Because it was all still the same decade.

By the early 90s you didn't see that anymore. Things were moving to a PC compatible monoculture and arcade ports were less important outside of Sega consoles. You no longer saw the 80s predilection for porting arcade games onto 25 different systems.

>> No.2864949

So it's more like...yeah things do change a bit over the course of a decade, however some other trends remain constant.

For example, the 70s is well-remembered for economic stagnation and everything being in shades of brown and orange. This was true from beginning to end even though in many regards, 1979 was a lot unlike 1971 when the fumes of the 60s were still very much present.

Pardon for the long post ahead, but personally I think the mid to late 90's were the defining years of a video game renaissance that had never been seen before. This is a fairly young creative medium so hear me out why I think it's those years. We look at the majority of the well established gaming franchises of the time (that are still highly regarded classics today) and they were merely side scrolling games to pass time. They were just games. Then out of nowhere, those franchises completely reinvented themselves into something more than being games as entertainment, they became stories with depth. Games like Ocarina of Time, Paper Mario, Megaman Legends, Sonic Adventure, Final Fantasy VII, all introduced a new perspective at to what games are capable of being by reinventing themselves and video game standards. If we look at literature, Ulysses was the defining novel of the 20th century, because it introduced a universal paradigm shift in perspective as to what literature could be. Books before then were merely plot driven and one dimensional, but Joyce showed a stream of consciousness never before seen, with a twist on a story that was character driven. It set a new standard and made the structure of Modernist literature what it was. Films in the late 60's and early 70's showed the same breakthrough by being experimental, thus lifting not only the genres and the directors who made the films, but also the entire craft itself to a new level. Time again we get stuck in these grace periods where all the games, music, or films we take in have a repetitive tone and rehash feel because they all mirror each other. 1/2

>> No.2865034

That is until a new piece of art comes out that changes everyone's perspective by setting a new standard, where the avant-garde becomes the accepted norm. Going back to games, this is why anything 6th Gen and beyond feels different because we have elevated ourselves to a new level. It is beautiful to see this in art, as well as science with new discoveries, and sports with athletes that raise the bar with unmatched performance. Then again, I'm a 96 fag so take everything I just said with a grain of salt. 2/2

Except art is anything created. Calling something "artistic" is not to be taken as a compliment. Where the fuck did this misconception arise? If you want to go by terms that denote quality, use low-brow and high-brow. And if you really want to go that route
>Tetris, it is a self contained proponent of the media without needlessly assuming other aspects of art to supplement it's own shortcomings in this regards

As with all art, tetris is a reflection. It's a reflection of the struggles with conformity people face, once you finally do fit in with a certain crowd as an individual you disappear. It's a reflection of society, if too many people refuse to comply to the norms of society it has a negative impact on society. It's a reflection on certain underlying principles of life. Just like how each piece is made of 4 squares just rearranged differently, so too are all humans composed of the same material, just in a different configuration. Just as how certain pieces are suited better to certain tasks, so too are humans suited to better niches in life. It highlights the futility of existence, how such methodical planing and preparation gets undone and forgotten, how no matter how good you are it keeps going until eventually you can no longer catch up

>I can say that it shocks the shit out of me to see 4chan references spouted on mainstream sites like YouTube, EPIC becoming a marketing buzzword, and seeing 4chan referenced pretty much anywhere outside of the darker corners of the internet.

the way i see it, the internet culture has been far more accepting than it was maybe 20-15 ish years ago where i guess it was still considered super nerdy or you were a basement dweller with nothing better to do. tho i never had true internet experience till 2005. People accept memes and other things that have possibly originated from here and migrated it into mainstream society.

/f/ is like old 4chan. weird and boring with no context. i've been here since 06 and things have changed a lot. I got on 4chan when it was getting edgier. you could tell there was a mix of idiots with confused orignal users. 4chan was a way to mimic japanese culture a la 2ch but it was growing and people just spammed nigger, fagggot jokes, and porn over and over on /b/. most of the other boards were so slow, it wasn't worth posting. no one would reply for days.

4chan is essentially the western version of the 2chan.
>/f/
I had no idea we had that until now, I might check it out to bring back some old memories of mid 00s internet nostalgia. Thanks ! The only board that seem to generate alot of traffic are /b/, /fit/, /v/, /pol/, and /sp/ imo but /b/ usually takes the credit for just being "4chan" to everyone else. Do you think /b/ has evolved within the years?

Got to experience the late 80s as a little toddler and the whole 90s decade fully. Not bad at all. The only thing that sucks is that I'm already 30, I don't know what happened the past 10 or 15 years, it's like a blur in my memory as far as entertainment and pop culture events go.

93 here, started coming to 4chan when I was 12.
I haven't gone to /b/ since I was probably 17 years old (and am deeply embarrassed by it, and will outright cut off friendships with people if I find out they use modern /b/).
/b/ was always awful, but back when I was on there (late 2005 up until 2010) it always seemed a lot more sinister.
4chan wasn't this big huge thing yet like it is now, and it seemed like the type of people that used 4chan were genuinely on the fringe of society whether it be the fringes of adolescence or adulthood. Rather than now where everybody and their dog know what 4chan is and has probably poked around a few times.
It made for a much more interesting experience and I truly felt like a rebel, being a part of something that would "change the world" which was helpful because at the time I was an overweight depressed NEET who was desperate for a purpose.
It's pretty fun (but terribly edgy and embarrassing) to mention with people familiar to the site and its history that you were around during some of the Cracky stuff, the Mitch Henderson stuff, the Tom Green stuff, fucking Haboo Hotel, Hal Turner,or the Boxxy war (I actually went to high school with her which made the whole situation that much more interesting, that situation is what led to me qutting /b/ though), or when actually fucked up illegal shit would be posted on the board.

4chan in general is pretty terrible now. I only really come to occasionally lurk on /vr/ or /mu/ when I have free time and am by myself.

I been here since 06. Back then I shitposted on a and lurked a bit and I was scared of b. I still am. For the most part I didn't like it here because of the immaturity. In 11 or 12 it was noticeably more civilized and I started posting more.

I used to post on the text boards too.

I was a year younger than her, and it was pretty bad honestly.
People would make fun of her for it, creeps would drive from out of state to come watch her high school plays, and it was just all weird. Her parents got divorced over the whole thing and they had law enforcement watching the family for a while during the peak of it.
I don't think most of the school actually knew how crazy it actually was online though.

You might be autistic or something and thus incapable of putting yourselves in somebody else's shoes, but try and put yourself in their position.
The internet wasn't stalking, harrassing, and threatening just Catie. They were doing the same to her family as well. They weren't just worried about her (which obviously probably put a huge strain on their lives, and their inability to really do anything to stop it) but also themselves.
Stress like that can fuck up a marriage.

These memories are completely priceless. No other time in history has something like this happened nor will it ever happen again.

My friend STILL has a recording of me prank calling Hal Turner years back and I still get a chuckle out of it, even though now it's just teenage stupidity. Still remember my dad asking me later why the fuck was there 15+ attempted calls to New Jersey or wherever the fuck he was from. Tom Green raids and GirlTalk were still the pinnacle of hilarity back then - still trying the find the one where he had Tony Hawk on and a /b/ caller told Tom he "sucks eggs and is a faggot", and Tony starts laughing. Or the time they ordered like $150 worth of sushi to him.

But Subeta rules all, 40 fucking PS3s ordered that admin over a fucking longcat item along with 10+ copies each of every season of The Fresh Prince, using his own stolen credit card. I still die thinking about it.

Eh, I found 4chan in 2009 and like most I started on /b/. Every single faggot feels like he's the final boss of the Internet when he discovers b. I lasted there about a year before moving on. I think of b as a chantards puberty. I can't believe you lasted there 5 years though. Maybe it was different in the past but still its such a shithole. I was 23 when I found 4chan. I guess you enjoyed b for that long since it really is filled with children.

imo nostalgia and selective memory can really distort judgment. I've browsed 4chan since 2008 and while it's changed over time, it's always been a retard sandbox, especially b.
