Why is this not being talked about here?

This is a PC build of Mario 3 made by Carmack and Romero. This was just now released for viewing. Pretty interesting stuff, check it out.

Oh, the youtubers just found out and want to "show off" again

>> No.2855405

Apparently it was created in order to try to get Nintendo to start bringing their games to PC. Pretty cool.

yes, this story is discussed in the book "Masters of Doom", which all of you should read if you haven't already

basically, when Carmack was working on the tech that would eventually be used in Wolfenstein 3D (and later, DOOM), Romero was so impressed by what his engine could do (scroll the screen, among other things, shit which was unheard of for a DOS game during that era) and they were all playing mario 3 on nes in the office at the time, so they decided to recreate mario 3 using Carmack's engine and send it to Nintendo as a proof of concept in order to sell Nintendo on porting their software to PC.

Nintendo said "hey that's neat! thanks for sending it", and nothing more happened.

>> No.2855834

>>2855812
It's not so much the ability to scroll the screen in all directions, but how smooth and "controlled" it was.

Because you can't even think videogames existed before you do.

Game is old, back then it's the best it could look like.

Videogames graphics didn't start with PS3-gen.

not gonna lie, it's only impressive for vga standards, any sidescrolling 256 color engine like jazz jackrabbit, abuse, tyrian 2000/raptor blows it out of water

>> No.2856337

>>2856329
Jazz Jackrabbit does, because it was solid 60fps/70fps (selectable with commandline switch). The others you listed are low framerate just like the Mario demo.

Wanna see you do better, then.

>> No.2856339

>>2856337
Yeah I think Tyrian had a Pentium setting that doubled it to 60fps, but it sped the entire game up.

Hahahaha, this is just miserable. Look at those physics. I can't believe this is the demo they were talking up in Masters of Doom.

Look at that choppy shit. Christ.

it was thrown together in three days. this is a proof of concept prototype, not a finished product. guaranteed your favorite games looked just as bad while being developed.

It's 35fps recorded at 30fps/60fps, so the real thing isn't as bad as the video looks. But yeah, it's no NES game.
