Any new computer will beast any game that is old enough to be talked about on this board. Heck most of those games you can get modern ports of off GOG.

If he never played any kind of game he will love it because kids don't care about pretty grafx. That said, tablet games like Angry Birds and such ain't too bad for him, but that means him using a tablet/phone and I just wouldn't feel safe about him, unless you specifically instruct him not to touch settings and such because he might "break" it and just keep it offline.

About console games, either you find a way to get fast emulators on that PC, or scrap them entirely, because you would need a CRT (or a really expensive upscaler which would just look bad) to play them properly. Tablet emulators suck and you're forced to use touch controls which also suck while you don't have to hold anything while playing PC games but a mouse. Edutainment games are also good for those inputs.

OP, I think you will struggle to get a 6 year old to play sim city 2000. Day of the tentacle? He'll like the graphics but dear god I got stuck on that game when I was like 16 (pushing the speaker over never even occurred to me) and sure show hom quake if you want to traumatise the kid jesus christ. The original tomb raider played like ass and the reboot is super gory so I don't follow your thinking there. Worms is a good shout, provided you turn the turn time limit off.

Let me give you a few alternate suggestions:

Master system sonic 1. Only one button and the levels are simpler than mega drive.

Feeding frenzy. Fish! Easy to play and kids love being a fish eating other fish.

Lego: whatever they're into. These games are great for kids.

But seriously, get them whatever nintendo is making by then and chill. If they show an interest later you can show them the classics, but you don't start your kids off watching citizen kane do you? You start them off with frozen or whatever and when they like that you show them better stuff.

Something something early 3d games hard to make out something something no suspension of disbelief etc etc but yeah, Quake is a little too much IMO and not a lot of fun. I would either suggest Dark Forces since Star Wars is the cool thing again or some lighter, cartoony Doom/Wolf3D mod. Although I suspect any FPS, even Dark Forces could cause nightmares, but that's pretty normal, I think.
