Probably the ones where he enjoys the game he's playing for a moment. For example, the Godzilla one or the Back to the Future one. Also, the Big Rigs one was pretty nice.

It adds a little depth to his character when he takes a break from being angry. Whether it means moving into actually laughing at the games, or more of a tragic figure who's aware that he's trapped himself in a painful cycle of self-torture while lacking the ability to pull himself out.

I'm personally liking Board James more than the newer AVGN episodes at this moment. It feels like he enjoys the role more, and it plays around more with the review format.

Personally, I prefer Gunstar over Contra as there's a huge difference in difficulty depending on what weapons and shot type you use; I'd argue Gunstar is much more replayable than Contra because of this.

I actually question the sanity of people that choose Final Fight over SoR; I had the chance to play the first arcade game at a bus stop and found it to be incredibly repetitive. Is 2 any better in that regard? I might bother checking it out as I'm a sucker for beat-'em-ups anyhow.

Can't say anything for RPGs, though I will concede that Square had much better writing. But again, I haven't played PS much beyond the first one, so I can't give a definitive opinion.

I personally _loved_ Shining Force, though that could be chalked up to it being my first tactics game. Either way, I liked it. I sort of assumed they were supposed to be slow, to help digest the information you're given.

I prefer Bloodlines and Hard Corps. Again, this is probably just our personal bias differing as they're all solid games.

It's unfortunate that you don't like shooters, as the Genesis has some great entries. I suppose learning enemy types and stage progressions can be a little tedious when you can play whatever you want, so I can understand.

One thing I'm not letting go however is you calling Shinobi 3 "okay". Personally I prefer the first game, but the 3rd is what defined the series! What wasn't to like about it? The music, the level and enemy design, and the difficulty were fantastic, in my opinion.

I used to love James but if I saw him today I'd honestly try to kill him just to put him out of his misery. He's like an old sick dog that you can't stand to see hurt any longer.

He hates being the nerd but that's all he's got and he has to keep playing the character to maintain a living. His movie, the one chance of him following his dream of being a real film maker, was a completely embarrassing disaster. The problem with Shining Force as I remember it is that every time it was the enemy's turn the screen would scroll all over the map to them, they'd do nothing, repeat over and over. If they're not gonna do anything have them not do anything off screen and stop wasting time. Especially when maps were so large it could take 3-4 turns before you ever encountered your first guy to fight.

Shinobi 3 was slow too. I liked Ninja Gaiden on NES, it's one of my favorites and definitive ninja game. The vertical stage in S3 where you're jumping on rocks kills the fun factor for me.

SoR1 didn't grab me, 2 was okay but I never beat it and 3 I never played. I like FF because it uses some of the same characters in Street Fighter. To me all beat em ups are repetitive and kind of boring but I like Capcom's visuals.

Ah, yeah I can see how that would be annoying. I always found it to be a small victory as it was essentially saying "I can't do anything/consider what I might be doing in the future". I didn't really notice a "change in pace" but again it was my first game.

Shinobi 3 is NOT slow if you're good at it, you can get a really good pace going if you know the right times to run and attack. At that point you're speedrunning though, so it's understandable; I like the pace anyhow.

What about SoR didn't "grab" you? Was it too slow? Because I think you just prefer larger sprites for beat-'em-ups, if I'm not mistaken. I'm the opposite, I'm actually in the minority of people that would play SoR1 over 2 as I find the larger sprites leave less to the imagination and generally just look really doofy to me. No, I watched that video. What he's saying is that all the accusations his haters made that he was only doing reviews for the money instantly stopped when James flat out asked for money. Even though I don't find AVGN laugh-out-loud funny very often, I still see an undeniable charm in just about everything James makes.

It's so close to being "cringey", and yet it isn't, for me at least. He's just too likeable.

I think he was just hurt. He sent what was basically a love letter (but a manly bro one) to his idol and he didn't get back the response he was expecting. I was all ready to start doing youtube style content, and I finished like 25 episodes of what I was doing before I even posted one. Then I decided it was cringe inducing for me and I stopped.

I always knew I needed some kind of buffer. That I needed to have content ready in case I ever missed a deadline. If it takes you a week to make a video, and theres some kind of delay, or issue, and you miss your weekly episode, people are going to get mad.

Part of why I unsubbed from a lot of channels was just due to there being a shitload of "channel update" videos where it starts off with "I know I haven't been posting videos lately... but heres whats going on..."
