There's no way to save both Otacon and Meryl, is there?
How the hell are they both alive in later games?

Otacon doesn't die if Meryl survives. Otacon survives either way. The difference between the two endings is either Meryl dies or Meryl doesnt die. That's it.

doesn't otacon have some codec messages close to finish?

This. I recently went back and played MGS1 and enjoyed it. My dick was 100% flaccid when I played TPP.

Meryl and Snake's relationship was one of my favorite bits on MGS1. Then 4 happened and shit all over it. Shame.

For me it was actually the opposite. I prefer the bad ending of MGS1 because it seems to really solidify Snake and Otacon's friendship and seems to be a good set-up for the philanthropy missions in MGS2. I was upset that MGS4 confirmed the good ending as canon because the bad ending seems better written.

Give me a choice between stealth camo and bandanna, I will pick the stealth camo, without fail, every single time.

Same here. It's also one of the moments my eyes got a little wet from a video game, regardless of whether or not it will just be awkward seeing it now.

I kinda wished the "Meryl dies" was canon, if only because the Meryl/Akiba pairing was the stupidest thing that came out from MGS4 and her whole character in that game contributed nothing other than for the occasional infodumping.

The same way Chris, Jill, Barry and Rebecca got out of the Mansion alive.

IIRC, MGS2 avoids mentioning Meryl because they wanted the game to be able to take place after either ending.

I agree that bringing her back with MGS4 was a mistake. But then again, MGS4 in general was a mistake.

Otacon's ending is the best. It felt the most natural and had the strongest message. I like that upon leaving Shadow Moses, they both left their loves behind and became bros.

>> No.2832370

>>2832143

This. That ending makes me feel. I liked Snake and Meryl's relationship quite a bit, too, but I enjoyed her death and the lessons Snake learned from it. Plus, as you said, it seemed canon in MGS2.

>IIRC, MGS2 avoids mentioning Meryl because they wanted the game to be able to take place after either ending.

Yep. This is also why Snake has both the stealth camo and the bandana.

One of Snake and Otacon's Codec convos on the Tanker mentions her being alive. I was surprised too.

>> No.2832537

>>2832320

I didn't think it was a mistake as far as showing how Snake and Meryl's relationship had turned out after MGS1, it was probably the only bit of character writing in that game that wasn't completely fucking awful.

The story of the game as a whole was absolutely a complete mess, it's unfortunate that the cowriter of MGS1, 2 and 3 left after those were made, but I guess he thought he had better things to do with his life than clean up all of Kojima's writing mistakes and watch him take all the credit for it.

>> No.2832543

>>2832372
It makes more sense that Snake just didn't want to mention Meryl, and she didn't seem to be too keen on being a soldier altogether so it would make sense for her to not be in 2. That and it was Raiden's story, not Snake's.

That and she gets a very brief mention and they quickly get off that subject.

>> No.2832552

>>2832537
She was just one of many returning characters that didn't have a reason to return. As a result she says hilariously tone deaf things like "WHAT HAPPENED TO UR FACE?" and "A REAL BIG BOSS, HUH?" (how sensitive of you, Meryl) and does mostly nothing. She's just fanservice to satisfy questions that didn't need answers because her role in the story was over.
>>2832529
I remember her being mentioned, but I don't remember it confirming that she was alive. I replayed MGS2 recently but I honestly don't remember that conversation.

I have a hard time accepting Meryl and Snake as a romantic couple. Given she's like 18 and they knew each other for maybe a couple of hours

IIRC, no, but because the President stopped the nuke launch, Otacon didn't die at Shadow Moses, and Snake tells Campbell to send someone to pick him up.

>> No.2833070

>>2832554

Well, that was the point of everything that came after; Meryl still clearly thinks a fuck of a lot of Snake, but he's too fucking broken to make anything work.

God damn though, the lead-up to MGS2 had so many people sweating. Snake and Otacon are in total bro-mode and Meryl was nowhere to be found. I don't even think Natasha's book makes it clear; it wasn't until the Snake Tales/VR missions that anyone really got a clear answer weather or not she survived.

There's barely any coherence in the canon of the integral games. To infer any significance from Meryl's presence in Snake Tales/VR Missions is foolish.

I recall they actually addressed that in the game. Snake remarked that it just sounds like Stockholm syndrome to him. Regardless, creepy waifu crushes sounds appropriate for Otacon's characterization in mgs1.

Otacon's saves himself in Meryl's ending. He wears the stealth camo and walks away. It's not like you even "save" Meryl, she's Schrodinger's cat for half the game.
