The original was very cool. He also was a petty asshole and a pedophile who almost destroyed the planet. He had all the skill in the world and the great ideals of his father, but when tragedy struck he always reacted in vengeance and turned into a husk of what he could have been as a result. But during his time in the franchise, he was many things, often at once: rival, ace pilot, big brother, rogue agent,a revolutionary hero of the people, mentor, and manipulative bastard. And I really think him being a person with all these dimensions and being a very flawed man were what made him interesting and cool.

Though considering the whole pedophile part, I understand perfectly why the fast majority of "char clones" focus on the superficial coolness of him like his custom red/salmon colors, the shades/mask, etc.
