Is the raspberry pi good for emulation? I hear a lot of hate for it but it's cheap and retropie is easy to set up and maintain. What's a good alternative?

Rpi 2 is great. Plays SNES/PS1 and everything older than those perfectly, except for maybe some MAME stuff? I'm not familiar with how it handles mame. If you're looking for n64/ps2/psp/nds/ngc/wii emulation you may need to look towards using a more conventional computer, but if you're not RPI2 is perfect.

I use Lakka instead of Retropie, but they're both fine. Lakkas just easier for me to setup and configure perfectly cause I'm familiar with retroarch

Depends on the emulator, display you use, and of you're OK with framedropping/etc.

The tiny displays that attach over the GPIO pins are slow, use an inordinate amount of CPU, and completely bypass the GPU, so anything using that will probably be unacceptable. Screens thst use the GPU can be attached via RCA (analog), HDMI or the LCD header (i think lvds, but on my phone & don't feel like looking it up).

RCA is analog, and not crisp, but it does limit your resolution. That helps because lower res uses less CPU, but can be lower than the res of the original game.

Directly attached screens to the LCD header on the pi are rare and outrageously expensive (for what they are).

HDMI will want to use the native res of the screen, which will be unusable if it's trying to scale/render the game at 1080P. You can force the res, but at boot only IIRC. So you'll be modifying the resolution and rebooting for different games (or choosing one res and sticking with it).

That said, 8 bit home platforms should be fine.

My 2b plays at 1080p/60fps solid for most (read: almost all) games. Even PSX. It dips a bit occasionally on some SuperFX games though

>> No.2819663

>>2819640
I haven't played many Playstation games for it, but the ones I have (crash 2, ff7, metal gear solid) rarely dip below 59/60, audio rarely crackles, and this is with no frame stepping AND 1080p. I spent about a day configuring everything and getting the perfect overclock/settings for the system (not even overvolting), but it works like a dream for me.

I don't know if everyone has this problem but my biggest problem with it is that there's noticeable input lag. I still have to confirm that it's not just the TV, but for everything I've tried it on (gonna try pc 5ms monitor ASAP to confirm again) there's a noticeable input lag that makes playing games like SMB3/SMW take a bit of adjustment and lose the "tightness" in the controls.

I'm at my parents house for thanksgiving but when I get back in a couple days I'll post my pi configuration settings

>> No.2819697

I should add, that I was thinking of the original raspberry pi, not the pi2.

The same still holds (reboot required to change resolution, GPIO graphics slkw, analog not sharp)....but the pi2 is significantly more powerful, so yeah, maybe running everything at 1080p is fine now :)

It's 40% faster than the original Pi B+ that could do up to the 16 bit systems. There's a problem however. Out of those two micro usb ports one belongs to a power supply. So you have only one usb port. The retroarch os and emulation station front end is run of the micro sd card and the games are generally put on a usb device for ease. You could go ahead and put everything on the sd card. The problem is you still have only one micro usb port. You'd need an usb "on the go" adapter to plug in regular size usb devices. You have only one usb port for a controller. This is ok for xbox 360 wireless controllers where you use 1 port to connect many. Regular corded usb controllers and you only have 1 port. You'll need to switch between the controller and the keyboard a lot during setup. This will be a nightmare. It's a mini hdmi port as well which is fine if your tv uses mini cables but still most don't. If it doesn't then that's another adapter. You'll have no internet access in this configuration as you'd need a usb wifi dongle for this and all your ports are tied up. This will have you constantly swapping the micro sd card back and forth btw a rooted linux machine and the pi to make configuration changes you'd make over the network otherwise. The other Pi's have 4 usb ports as opposed to one so none of this is ever a problem. It also has an actual ethernet cable.

>Long story short it will do 16 bit but is not worth the effort and won't give you the flexibility of the Pi2 or Pi B+ board. Just go with the Pi2. You'll know it does the PSX catalog nicely and some of the N64. Add up all the adapters and powered USB hub (that will likely work like shit) and you've spent more time and money building the Pi zero than you would have just buying the Pi2 to begin with. The Pi2 6 times faster than the original Pi B+ while this is only listed as 40% faster. The Pi Zero is a neat board that has purpose. Just not as a retro gaming platform imho.

I barely drop any frames. Fighting games on PS1 even play great. You could try an odroid if you want an alternative. It's slightly more expensive. The youtube videos I've seen tend to compare an unclocked Pi2 to an Odroid. My pi2 runs smoother than the odroids in the vids. Retropie has built in overclock settings that don't void the warranty on the pi2. Either way you go use a "class 10" sd card. Many kits come with a garbage one. It's cheaper and better to just buy the card yourself and not use the junk they try to upsell you on in a bundle. Samsung evo sd's are the cheapest I've seen on amazon and work great.

Well. There were a few that used them.

The issue with emulator control setups, is what cabinets you plan on emulating.

An analog stick for an old fighter or sidescoller would be sacrilege. For a flight sim, absolute necessity.

You've never used an arcade cabinet, have you?
/VERY/ few arcade cabinets used analog joysticks. The only ones that come to mind are Monkey Ball, and a few Naomi games.

The levers you find in 99% of arcade cabinets are four switches mounted on UDLR. So no, they aren't analog sticks by any stretch of the imagination.

Much higher specs than the old 486 I played it on back then, but it works flawlessly. If your copy doesn't work, try googling "epic pinball" and downloading the second result. If DOSbox doesn't work directly for some odd reason, try getting D-Fend Reloaded and using the wizard, pointing the program to pinball.exe and setup.exe.

On an actual computer now, so could look it up. Yeah, that's the problem. The rPi uses a DSI (Display Serial Interface) port, and not LVDS. which is why it took forever to get a real display to hook up to that port.

Yep, a bunch of the Sega Super Scaler games used an analog stick. Space Harrier is the only other one I can think of off the top of my head but I'm sure there's more.

Many racing games also used analog input - a joystick sure isn't canon but gives far better results than tapping a D-pad.

You're right that the vast majority of games used clicky UDLR sticks held in the palm, which is way different from a small analog stick manipulated with the thumb.

Optical encoder unit, or sometimes a 270° potentiometer for racing games.

All of the free turning wheels are optical: pic related, from Pole Position. I don't know if I'd call it actually analog. It basically is emitting a stream digital signals like: turned left one step turned left one step, turned rigth one step, turn left one step.... Kindof cool when you hook it up to a scope.

Yes. There's some specific command that lets you do it. You should never store your games on the sd card. It makes it a larger and more pain of an ass file to back up. (which you really want to do. Instead of having to configure everything again you can be up and running in 20 minutes if your sd card craps out.) I currently keep all my roms on a large flashdrive plugged into it. it attenuates (reduces) the signal in general. If you dial this down a little bit, it'll be enough to kill a signal that's ghosting. Like if you're on a the edge of two stations broadcasting the same channel, you will get both signals, so turn it down a little bit, and you'll just get one, whichever is stronger.

It's better paired with a directional and motorized antenna because you could point it at one signal or another too.

Get a flashcart anyways because they're like $10 these days.

Emu-wise don't expect too much out of 16-bit games (screen resolution too small) but it's worth it for DMG/GBC games alone.

Lameboy is great for DMG emulation as it includes a shades-of-green palette right out of the box, meaning I actually prefer it to my AGS-101. Also can play in stereo (without headphones), some of the pokemon games have some neat stereo effects going on.

There's also the obvious non-retro DS library to consider, can play translations like Arino's Challenge 2, excellent Prof. Layton series etc. Compatibility for mine isn't super great (probably about ~75% games I wanted to play worked) but that still leaves a lot if you're not dead set on particular titles.

I wouldn't bother with an expensive cart, just get a cheap one and a cheap 8Gb SD card (speed doesn't matter). Also a RAM expansion or 3-in-1 in the slot-2 can help with the more demanding emus.

Controls are literal garbage and it looks like puke. It does save though.

I might upload a webm once I figure out the transcoding, every character is constantly glitching out and flailing their limbs like spooky Fallout 3 boogeymen. As for the controls, standalone mupen64plus recognizes my mayflash adapter + OEM controller right out of the box whereas the retroarch core seems to be set up for people trying to use a DS3/Xbox 360 pad (puke) and doesn't work with keyboard controls or my n64 pad until I edit. after that It won't save my control changes on reboot.

I don't really understand how porting it to retroarch introduces all these problems, but whatever I guess. "It's free software, fix it yourself"

I guess I should clarify that I'm not new to retroarch by any means, I use the gambatte, genesisplusgx, nestopia, snes9x-next, vba-next all without issues. Alright so I have this RPI 1 that I threw retropie v3 on. I down...ahem ripped a large amount of ROMs from arcade machines I own and I believe they are for Mame 0.149? So, if I'm understanding correctly, I can only run roms that are the same version as the emulator I am using right?

On Windows I can play the roms with MameUI64 0.149 just fine. Now what I understand is I can't just move those roms to my Raspberry Pi cause it doesn't use that version of MAME.

So I looked into CLRMAMEPRO and found a guide that shows how to load a profile and rebuild the games. Which should change the rom version to the one I need if I use the dat file from the raspberry pi, right?

Just for shits, I tried rebuilding Metal Slug 2 both for Mame4All and FBA, neither worked. Just black screen with no response. I looked at the compatibility list and saw that FBA supported Metal Slug 4, so I tried rebuilding that, and same thing.

Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong?

I've used Daemon Tools Lite (which I know I shouldn't use but I haven't uninstalled it yet) and Virtual Clone Drive as my virtual drive mounting software, and have three different copies of the game taken from different places (two of them are bin/cue and the third is img/ccd/sub), and I haven't been able to get past this roadbump yet.

For PS1, Your options are pretty much mednafen(has libretro core) for "just werks", or PCSXR for muh HD. ePSXe is about the same as PCSXR too, but honestly I'm against it just for political reasons.

I have several of the cheap $3 ones, and several $15 iBuffalo.

I started with the $3 ones, they are a great deal for backup controllers and RPGs etc but a bit irritating to play precise games with. The d-pad is a little mushy and it's way too easy to accidentally hit diagonal-up when you really meant to hit up. The plastic used on the d-pad feels cheap, too.

The iBuffalo ones feel great and having the turbo is kind of neat for shmups but does make it look a little less "authentic hardware experience^tm" so it's kind of a wash. You also have to make do with the JP/Euro buttons, they don't make them with the convex/concave NA arrangement. Finally it's about ~10 grams lighter than the OEM controller, but this is easily remedied by stuffing the controller with some pennies & electrical tape. On the whole the iBuffalo's are great.

Since I've gotten the iBuffalo's I haven't used the cheap ones at all. I would only pick them up if you're set on 4-player bomberman or something or you're keen on bragging rights for how cheap your setup was.

When I google SCP, I always see "DS2/DS3/DS4", but when I tried to install the latest version from Github, I only got options for DS3 and 4. If it can help, I am using a transparent blue adapter with two ports, and my computer sees it as "Twin USB Network Gamepad"

Looking to house a Rapsberry Pi 2 inside a DMG Gameboy case for use as a standalone emulator up to NES/SNES/GBA. I've seen some builds that look close to what I want, but nothing that retains the gameboy feeling entirely in my opinion. I would even be fine with printing a DMG case even to adjust ports, etc. I'd like to include an LCD screen, all buttons + LR mapped to a (midi) controller, and a decent rechargeable battery pack.

This will hopefully be my first real successful project of this sort. I tried fitting a GBASP inside a DMG a few years back but kept frying boards trying to desolder the cartridge port.

Any suggestions or relevant guides? This will be my first Raspberry Pi project, and I'd like it to go as smoothly as possible. I'm fine with dropping some money as long as it's worthwhile for this project. I have a bit of very very basic programming experience, but I'm going to essentially be learning everything from scratch.

Is this feasible?

Guys, I'm looking for an inexpensive handheld for playing old gaems. Honestly I'm quite new to retro gaming, besides playing few Dendy (the Russian NES) games back in childhood, so don't have any particular preferences yet - generally the more games I could try and play, the better. So far I considered used DS Lite which is a bit hard to find here, but it has a good library of quality DS and GBA titles (which is always better than emulation) as well as some emulated platforms, and PSP that is much easier to get here, however, I'm not certain about native PSP games, and despite supporting lots of platforms, I'm unsure about the display: the resolution is big enough for picture at 1:1 ratio to be small for most platforms, and small enough not to allow 2:1 scaling. Also I'm sort of reluctant to buying any chink devices. So, what else am I missing? Any hints or advises please?

I'm afraid that at 1:1 ratio the picture will be too small for my eyes (at least as what I see from screenshots) and upscaling at something like 1.5:1 is not an option. DS's screen is at least of lower resolution.

Also, am I right that I have no chances of having gorgeous CRT shaders on a handheld?

Now this doesn't work as well. WTF?! I tried restarting and deleting PCSX-R, creating a new folder an unzipping but now the controller isnt recognized anymore only inside this program. I also tried SCP Lylipad, also doesnt work in PCSX-R. The worst thing is after I deleted the program folder and re-unzipped it to a new location all my previous settings were saved somewhere. I figure here lies the problem, something is configured and saved incorrectly and can't be reset. Does anyone know where PCSX-R settings are saved? I looked inside AppData but didn't find anything.

Yeah in the emulation wiki is says so and I trust it as a source.

"3D: PEOPS OpenGL 1.78 - Comes with PCSX-R. Has an anti-jitter function labeled "GTE accuracy", and allows driver-forced AA. Despite being open source this plugin wasn't updated for years either and cant use shaders like Pete OpenGL2 and gpuBladeSoft.
Pete's OpenGL2 2.9 homepage - More accurate and compatible than OpenGL 1.78. It allows you to set a custom rendering resolution for within the fullscreen box, aka window resolution and has support for shaders. Unfortunately this plugin is closed source and wasn't updated for years. A hack was made to add GTE accuracy, and a few other options: PeteOpenGL2Tweak."

So is there a different opengl 1.78 plugin in linux that is more accurate than PEOPS OpenGL 1.78 and Pete's OpenGL2 2.9? Is there a documentation about this? I'm just being really curious here not antagonizing. As I understood it the emulator itself is more accurate and more developed than on Windows. But the plugin itself PeteOpenGL2Tweak is more accurtate than PEOPS OpenGL 1.78.

As someone that has edited quite a bit on that wiki I can tell you it's full of faggots and shills. It's just like that because the ePSXe shills lose it if you say anything good about PCSXR.

Either way, you will have to enable 32bit programs and compile shit yourself if you want 2.9 to work, and I don't think you're up to it since you seem like a Linux noob.

The wiki is lacking information about the linux version. I also noticed that the snes portion about bsnes in the wiki is very confusingly formulated.
But you didn't answer my question? Is 2.9 now more accurate or not? Because if it isn't it's obviously not worth it.

The Android advantage is it's open, with a wide variety of hardware available. You can get a machine with a fast enough processor for anything up to and including smooth N64 emulation, and you can do it for cheaper than a 3DS - and the 3DS hasn't even been properly cracked yet, last I checked.

To get a little off topic, Android also has a clean, robust, intuitive, lightweight interface and a commitment to staying open and empowering users that I'd really like to see the desktop OS market move toward. That it isn't particularly well optimized doesn't matter so much to me (or most other users) in light of all this.
