I wouldn't really say shinned then. A lot of the 3D Sonic games have some interesting concepts, but it's tacked on with tons of stuff that just doesn't work as well making them kinda middle of the road overall.

Except for Sonic CD, that game just trumps Sonic 1-3 easily.

Again, not that anon, but Sonic Advance 1 was objectively solid. Unoriginal, of course, and a kinda meh presentation, but it had great gameplay, and integrated the multiple player characters better than a lot of previous and later games did.

I wouldn't say they outshined the originals, though - but that depends on your definition of shining.

And this is only a subjective argument starter, but SatAM wasn't as good as AoStH or the OVA. The former didn't use enough elements from the games, Robotnik was incredibly shallow, there was almost zero focus on Sonic and Tails' friendship, and no sense of exploring beautiful, surreal landscapes. I'll admit that it might just be because I'm French and butthurt about Antoine's portrayal. Seriously, stereotypes are awesome, but why have it in a setting where France never existed?

I can't say Adventure 1 was good. Maybe SA2 is almost good (full of problems as it was, it's a much less glitchy game, consistently good Sonic level design, even if it had issues with the other playstyles), but SA1 lacks basic polish and most of the gameplay styles are crap (Sonic's almost okay, Tails is Sonic but with sloppier, dash-gate based stage design, Amy is way too slow to be fun, Knuckles is actually fine and I wish they didn't gimp the radar in SA2 to make the hunting aspect more of a hassle instead of more fun, Gamma's stages are clunky (Tails' stages in SA2 double down on this, Eggman's SA2 stages are great), Big is garbage since finding+catching Froggy isn't interesting at all).
Stage design is generally lacking too (as an easy example, you can't really defend Windy Valley, the second half of which is almost the textbook definition of "hold up to win"), there's three Sonic stages that are decent in SA1 (Emerald Coast, maybe Icecap, and definitely Red Mountain -- but that one is probably the best 3D Sonic stage of them all, with great music, a bunch of alternate paths (something that's lacking almost everywhere else), neat setpieces and it plays to SA1's handling really well, spindash jumping over shit is so good).

it's not /vr/, but Advance 1 is probably one of the better 2D Sonics for sure
stage design that approaches Sonic 2's, decent visuals and soundtrack, it's just a well put together game that gets it right
it's a shame Dimps forgot about what they did
like, Advance 2 is fun (the stages are a joy to speedrun, as dumb as they are), but is pretty much the definition of bad Sonic stage design, enjoy flying into the abyss for almost no fucking reason or crashing into enemies placed in the middle of the road while you're going full tilt, none of the later Dimps developed Sonic games fix those issues
