Those are really cool and not that common in 2D games, so I want to see those that actually exist. Preferably in platformers and with sprites, but other sidescrollers and 2.5 also works.

I love this thing. One of my favorite Genesis monsters. Also, do Not-zilla and mecha Not-zilla count? Notzilla does fit on the screen, but his was an impressive sprite for a console game of the time.

Holy balls that boss is hard. Not because any of it's attacks are particularly hard to dodge, it's just so slow and repetitive, and you have to be super consistent; I would argue it's the perfect primer for the incoming difficulty slope.

I would say it does, since it fits the whole screen.

2.5D was used to refer to 3D graphics with gameplay restricted to a two-dimensional plane at least as far back as the N64, and considering we've had way more titles in the 2.5D style of Kirby 64, Street Fighter IV, and Sonic Generations than Doom and Blood at this point, 2.5D referring primarily to the former is the most accepted use of the term.

In fact, I don't even recall "Doom clones" being called 2.5D. I remember first-person shooters like Doom and isometric platformers like Sonic 3D Blast being referred to as "Pseudo-3D".

Doom clones were called 2.5d in a 1997 (or was it 1998) in our local gaming magazine, and they explained it as the game not storing depth information (on the first level of Doom 2, after the switch moves under ground, you can still press it).

So basically the entire map was 2d in that it could not store any rooms above other rooms. Or enemies above enemies either - you could have a cacodemon 100 feet above you, and it would still block your path and you could still hit it with the chainsaw. Only really noticeable on the last level in Doom 2 though.

Holy shit anon, thank you for exposing me to another PC Engine hidden gem. I've been collecting for the system since last year and I though I had basically found out about all the worthwhile hidden gems, so thank you for this.

I got to the last boss of Shinobi III and never knew you can block. I still don't know how to do it.

Hold down the attack button to block. While blocking, you can still walk and crouchwalk slowly.

There's also a button code that fully enables the six-button controller, giving you different commands for most of the buttons.

I think it was:
A: Block
B: Melee attack
C: Jump
X: Ninjutsu
Y: Shuriken
Z: Shuriken

6 button mode makes the game play so much better while at the same time making it super easy. Can't go back to the original 3 button control scheme tho. Feels like a big step backwards.

Nah, you walk on multiple paths through the level, hence there is another dimension. 2.5D would be the most reasonable description imo

IIRC it has some 3D effects. Even Yoshi's Island has 3D effects.

It's amazingly disgusting seeing how Birkin devolves incrementally into some disgusting blob throughout the game.
