I was very surprised not to have an answer come to mind, and had to really dig around to find one.

Turns out I never really finished playing any game up until I was like 13, I was either playing no-endgame stuff (Star Control 2 supermelee with brothers, Tetris, Pinball games etc,), too English illiterate to know what I'm doing or too young to have sufficient drive, so my first game beaten was likely The Neverhood. I also didn't have the internet up until then so I might have even had to resort to a walkthrough for some puzzles (BOBBY, god fucking damnit it seems so clear in retrospect).

Well, maybe Mortal Kombat 1 / 2, which were pretty easy.

>I was either playing no-endgame stuff
Whenever the question of what game I've beaten when, this immediately comes to my mind. I admit I find the concept of beating a game very alienating. I don't beat books or movies. Games that have a beginning, end and narrative occasionally provide a challenge, but calling it "beating" to overcome that challenge? In the same way, I find it odd when people claim a game is "too easy", as if the mere concept of interactively experiencing and uncovering the narrative is insufficient for them.
So, yeah, I consider questions about "beating" games to be an indicator of a mindset that strikes me as kind of sad. Stuck in a single way to play a game, where it must end, and where the game is working against the player, instead of with them.

Not really that surprising, most Zelda games are pretty linear with their "use the item you get in this dungeon to unlock the next dungeon" shtick. At worst a modern zelda game that you can't understand is probably as bad as the first game and its wildly cryptic hints, if not more forgiving because of that "funnel" effect.

Sure you do, you just call it finishing them instead. Beating a game, finishing a game, it's the same thing. You arrived at the end and saw the credits.

>where the game is working against the player, instead of with them

By definition that's what a game is. It's you versus the computer. There is a defined win and loss scenario. It's a competition. If you can't lose then it's not a game. In that case it's just some "interactive experience" like a VN or something.

I did not say anything about losing. I just talked about treating the computer like an enemy, instead of a collaborator.
It's trivial for a computer to outperform a human, especially in dexterity based games. However, practically with no exception, puzzles and levels in games have a solution, bots make mistakes they were designed to make, and often actually break rules, which violates your rulebased competition claim, and sometimes games will adjust difficulty mid-game, when they detect the player is having troubles. That's not indicators of an enemy, that's indicators for a collaborator.

I did not imply that

>play a few rounds of Nethack, then tell me the computer is collaborating with you
Difficulty has nothing to do with it. If Nethack wasn't collaborating, it would not be winnable at all, as the computer could trivially throw shit at you at any point. Instead it's just providing a hellishly difficult setup, that can be overcome, and is overcome by quite a few players.

Having to follow rules does not mean collaborating, it simply means that there's consistency in the game to allow for player tactics based on the foreseeable future and reading the opponent; chess players, tennis players, boxers and MMA fighters, these all follow a semi-rigid ruleset and must adapt to a dynamic opponent in a predictable environment - would you say that they "collaborate with each other" too?

No, games require rules that can be explained and/or discovered to allow dedicated players a develop a better tools.
