Can we talk about one of my favourite video games of all time? Experiences? Memorable moments? Favourite enemies?

It took me 10 years to finally beat this game. I had it as a kid on the NES but I never finished it. My mom sold the NES and all the games for 10$ at a garage sale. I was so pissed because she sold it when I was putting up posters for the damn sale.

Anyways, I got the game on the Wii and finally finished it. Then a few months back I was high with some friends and one of them let me play his NES and I finished SMB.3 for the first time on the NES. Because of my altered state I was playing like a mad man.

No, no we cannot.

Every time I go to play Mario 3 I try to feel the magic that others feel with this game, but I can never get into it. I don't like the exploration aspect, it makes the levels seem sparse if you're just aiming for the goals.

I agree. SMB3 is the start of the casualization of the Mario series. I want a pure platformer, not an exploration game. SMB1 is superior.

It was my first Mario game (although I had played arcade Mario Bros. before, 3 was my first on the Super Mario series), on my famiclone, pic related my cart looked exactly like that, purple and all.

It was the first game I played with a map, before that I had only played arcade style games like circus charlie, bomberman or adventure island 1.

I played SMB3 with my dad and 2 neighbor kids every day. We eventually beat the game, my dad beat Bowser, I remember calling him to defeat him because we were panicking of fucking it up and having to do the level again.

One of my best childhood gaming memories for sure.

I also loved exploring around the levels, this particular famiclone cart had a sort of cheat code which would let you have access to unlimited powerups, all the time. So I had unlimited P-wing, I remember flying around in every corner of every level. Finding secret stuff like the sky level bonus in 1-3 felt very mysterious, the concept of finding secrets like that was new to me, although Adventure Island also has some secret bonus stages, the way you find them in SMB3 felt deeper.

Now I know there are a lot of great Famicom/NES games that also had things like maps and many secrets to explore/discover, but I jumped from older arcade-style, early famicom games, directly to SMB3, it was a huge change.

Played it again, the NES version on the Wii, a few years ago. Beat it and I still think it's a masterpiece of game design.
I started playing the SNES version the other day and I couldn't stop playing until I reached world 5, I did all the levels and hoarded a lot of powerups to use later.

this is the first NES game I ever finished, when my bro and I bought an NES in 2004 for not much dough. I was too much a scrub at 13 to play Zelda 2 (which also came with it) but SMB3 we could do. It took all night but we did beat it going straight through, no warps.

So what's your favorite world? For me it's a tough call between world 4 (a giant world just felt really novel to me, and I thought the levels in it were especially fun) and sky world (the first time I went through the tower and ended up in the sky map really blew me away). Honorable mention to world 8 as well, for being so intimidating and kicking my ass for such a long time.

>>2785167
It feels about right to me, though I do think it's harder than world 4. The second half of world 5 is what I'd call the biggest difficulty spike in the game, besides maybe world 8.

>> No.2785346

smb3 is classic. the different world themes were really creative, and I liked the artistic design throughout. the various powerups were a great addition - my only complaint is that the frog/tanooki/hammer bros suits are too rare, and kuribo's shoe was in only one level. fighting through airships at the end of each world was perfect.

the difficulty curve worked well, although I agree there were a couple spikes (world 3 and 5). I respect the smb3 bowser most of all - I mean he ruled a dark underworld and had an army, navy, and air force.

>>2785220
that book was hilarious. the cover makes it look like an in-depth scoop on the creation of mario games, which would've been interesting. instead, it's a rambling blog combined with a detailed text-only lets play.

I'll admit it had a few worthwhile ideas, like when he pointed out that smb3 was a war fought by proxies (mario vs koopalings), with bowser and princess as opposing generals until the end. and that the mushroom world is a different place from the mushroom kingdom.

>> No.2785504

World 3 is probably my favorite. Fun levels, great map music, and being able to take a canoe and explore other islands.

World 5 close second, when I ended up in the sky after escalating the tower of babel also blew my mind away as a kid.

Thats true. They are ALL great. Picking the objectively weakest one is really tough.

I like 6 because its a huge challenging world. It has a good variety of levels and the hammer suit, and a lot of good secrets like the ones with the fire flower.

World 7 is where the difficulty really got up there even from the spike in worlds 5 and 6. It's the world where if you didn't save a bunch of powerups from the previous worlds, you were going to have a bad day. The level design was really challenging, create but still fun. The pipe level with the movable platforms, the most challenging water level, the pipe jumping levels and the hardest fortress all stick out for me. Of all the worlds in a mario game, it was the one that really felt like the second to last one.

World 7 always kills my enthusiasm. I was never a fan of "pipe maze" levels. It's a kind of artificial challenge that I'm just not a fan of, just mindless trial and error. If I played the game more often, I might just remember the best routes through each level, but... eh. I rarely play the game all the way through anymore, as much as I love it. If I'm having casual fun, I usually stop before world 7, and if I want to beat it, I just take the warp whistle to world 8.

>> No.2788103

>got game over in World 8 during no game over run (no whistles)

>> No.2789131

I'm giving this game my first playthrough right now actually, currently only at World 3 because I suck. The lack of saves really annoy me though as I have to leave my Famicom on at all times. I guess I should've played the All-Stars version or just emulated it...

I'm really more of a SMW person (it's got saves) but SMB3 is nice enough and I can see why some people would prefer it over SMW.

>> No.2789147

>>2789131

the lack of saves was due to technical limitations. they made their best effort to make up for it with the warp whistles.

passwords definitely would not have worked, storing all the items and other info would've made them ridiculously long.
