He was a powerful conqueror and emperor.

>Battle of Salsu
Defeated 300,000 enemies from China.

>First Goguryeo-Tang War
Tang China was like the Rome of the East in its prime. Emperor Taizong was like the Napoleon of Asia. His only defeat came at the hands of Korea.

>Goryeo-Khitan War
The Khitans were a powerful empire back then. They got crippled by this war and never recovered, allowing the Jurchens and later Mongols to come to power.

I'm still on Windows XP, and I'd be interested in getting the expansion. However, the game as it currently stands, I'm only able to play it if I use an older deprecated version of the game that still supports it, as the newer versions were designed with features not supported on my system (probably moved away from supporting DX9).

If anyone who's reading this has purchased the expansion, can you check for me if you can use it with the last compatible Windows XP version? To do so, just go into your Steam Library, right click the game, select Properties, go over to the Betas tab, and from the drop down box inside, select last-win-xp-version.

It will then proceed to download a 400-600ish MB update. If it doesn't work, you can go back to your own version by going through the same aforementioned process, but selecting NONE instead.

Haven't upgraded for a myriad of reasons. Some may call them excuses, but I don't really wanna delve into those as usually every conversation I have regarding this situation with strangers rarely ends well.

I was actually in the middle of at least prepping my HDD for Windows 7. But it didn't turn out as I expected. Not like anything wrong happened. I just became too impatient waiting for my HDD to defrag so I could make a new partition with enough space.

Vikings are useless on land is a meme. I main Vikings and I find them very good in every setting. Their great economy makes them a decent Knight Rush candidate, and their full Archery Range, alright Siege Workshop and good infantry don't leave them at a loss of options later on. Their only major drawback on land I can think of is the lack of Halberdiers, and of course they're the best slinging civilization out there, too. They're pretty great in my book. Pros only play arabia, thats why they pick Huns. Because YOU ARE SUPPOSED to rush in feudal in Arabia. But guess what? theres like other 50 maps on AOE2 besides arabia. And 45 of them you cant just rush in Feudal. Thats mean a civ thats its a one trick pony is better because "MUH PROS upload epic feudal battles on youtube" is better? No wonder why my buddies call me 'Camel fucker'
And about that camels no longer being classified as ships
Lynch me if you want, but I somewhat disagree with this modification

Camels are defenders and attackers; hell even maybe harassers, but they are NOT base stormers; that's the Heavy cavalry role, not the Camelry
Now I can send a horde of mamelukes or imperial camels to destroy castles, then that was not supposed to happen, and even if you did, there would be lots of dead camels.

Notice the Byzantine bonuses, the only civ that beats the shit outta of the Saracens in every possible way
Look at their building HP bonus; but lack of masonry and architecture

This is a double edged bonus; both masonry and architecture gives HP bonus AND armor, meaning your castles will actually resist a horde of Paladins attacking your castle
I have sent a massive horde of frankish Paladins to level Byzantine castles, they went down faster than regular castle

Now, Saracens have lacking heavy cavalry, Saracens lack of that "Strong punch" (Champion and Siege Rams aside), mamelukes will melt appart if they attack a castle; hussars are not strong enough to do damage and champions will be most likely get shredded to pieces by Cataphracts and Hand Cannoners
The only way a Saracen can storm a base is with massive siege, Trebuchets, Bombard cannons and Siege rams; notice how this HP bonus makes byzantine castles weaker against heavy cavalry/champions BUT also makes them more resiliant to siege (You need more trebs to take down a Byz castle), and siege is the only way to a Saracen can storm a base.

As a professional camelfucker, this shouldn't be like this, camels should get destroyed by buildings, at risk of sounded like a bitter, jaded oldfag, I'm really against this change... even if this benefits my gameplay, like a lot.

As far as bonuses go? For absolute beginners there's Celts, the wood gather bonus is nice and they're good on more closed-in maps too, though lack a 'good' tech tree. Britons are also a nice one, teaching you the importance of archers and having a fair tech tree.

Teutons I don't think are exactly a 'beginner' civ, there are some incomplete advancement lines there and there but they're a nice well-rounded civ though. Just use the Teutonic Knights sparingly, as much as they're cool they are slow as shit and people will kite them with cavalry archers.

The Byzantines also offer an excellent tech tree and have cheap trash units.

Stuff like Goths, Huns, and the Mesoamerican civs are not bad at all, but they all lack one notable component each that might make it harder to play other civs. Goths are primarily aggressive and have no walls, Huns don't need housing and so might encourage bad habits outside of playing them, and Aztecs/Mayans lack calvary in favor for Eagle Warriors.

Then there's The Forgotten/African Kingdoms civs that not many will play, as well as the changes that they make in regards to balance (Eagle Scouts, Fire Galleys, Demo Rafts, Siege Towers, etc). Playing AoC more is probably more ideal especially with the legacy playerbase.

Just flick through them and find one to settle on, like what the other anon said watch pro matches, see how people utilize their civ bonuses

I tried it like a month ago. It installed fine and even ran all the way up to the menu but it asks for a disc no matter what I do. Might be because I'm using a modified disc image though but even with a no-cd crack it just stops at the same point.

I once did, kind of

In a team game, in a flank vs flank situation, I got the economical upper hand and I sent a few CAs to harass his economy, in the meanwhile, he have built a castle next to his farms and woodline

I kept harassing his gold, stone and hit-n-running his farmers, when he actually tried to fight back my harassing force, I sent a horde of suicidal light cavalries to kill all farmers and wood cutters

Light cavalries died, but took like 12 vills, with my last CAs lured away his attention (and knights) away from his town, in the meanwhile, I sent a random lonely ram, being followed with 15 petards

Boom went the castle
Boom went the TC
A massive horde of camels and mamelukes rushed in
Before they could Jihad anything, he resigned

Does that count as 'Petard victory'?

At this point the original AoE is child's play under Wine.

Nearly anything under Retro is usable under Wine, with the worst stuff ever happening being related to running in fullscreen.
