I'm starting a PS1 collection. I only have those games in the pic for now. I'll try to get the more popular ones like Resident Evil and Silent Hill eventually. There are also the Working Design games that I'd like to get.

Are there any hidden gems that I should look out for?

Thanks!

Personally, I think that Xenogears and FFIX were missteps on your part. But I'm not much for RPGs at this point in my life. If you like that stuff, then more power to you. I just don't personally think that those two games are worth the $$$ they fetch these days.

If you want some good shit for PSX, then get Tekken 2&3, pretty much any racing games, Twisted Metal 1&2, Tony Hawk games, Metal Gear Solid, Tomb raider 1 &2 (the rest kinda suck), Tenchu, Soul Reaver, Shadowman, But Your very next purchase should be one of the 3 Crash Bandicoot games though.

The best thing to do with the PSX is to start off by getting all the majorly popular games (while they're still cheap-ish) and then explore the universe of random cheapies on your own. Just get things that have interesting names or box art. You can't really go wrong. And don't listen to all the claims of "shovelware" and all that. Sure, it's THERE. But a lot of those games are actually still fun. And worth the $3 they'll cost you.

And don't overlook things like wrestling games. WWF Warzone may be a simple grappler/brawler, but it's actually really fun to play around in. And getting the crowd behind you for a powerup is a pretty neat mechanic.

Believe it or don't, there are actually people who both like collecting AND playing the games.

For me, if I download and burn a game and really really like it, I'll probably plan on dropping real world money on a real world copy. I like having things and I like supporting small local game shops that carry this kind of stuff.

Anyway, I recommend:

Elemental Gearbolt-
Awesome and unique light gun experience

Einhander-
Wicked cool shmup by Square right after they were riding their FF7 high

Ghost in the Shell-
a neat little action title with strikingly impressive animation on the cutscenes, especially for the time, and features the official English voice cast from the movie (many of which are the same to this day)

Thunder Force V-
Sorry. I love shmups. This one's regarded to be lesser than Thunder Force IV, but it's still solid.

R-Type Delta-
Again, shmup. Great installment in the series.

Guilty Gear-
The original that started it all was a PS1 exclusive.

Mega Man Legends 1 and 2-
Imagine if there was a Mega Man themed 3D Zelda styled game. Well, there were 2.

Misadventures of Tron Bonne-
A spin off of Mega Man Lerends. Really cool game with a variety of play styles.

Many, many more.

Darkstalkers 3

Bomberman Party Edition
Aside from the really bad load times this is a great entry to the serie

Street Fighter Collection
Two classics, in their arcade version with upgraded graphics.

Abe's Odyssey and Abe's Exoddus
Two cheap games, with some of the best atmosphere in any platformer

Mortal Kombat Trilogy
Plenty of characters, probably the best retro Mortal Kombat.

Worms Armageddon
Legendary game, ported on the original Playstation.
The PC version is better, but this one is great for parties.

Doom
Best version of the game, right after the PC version.

Star Wars Episode 1: Power Battles
A fun beat-em-up with Star Wars characters, one of the best co-op game on the Playstation.

Heart of Darkness
Another Another World on Playstation

Since everyone has the internet, and the internet knows everything, there's no such thing as hidden gems anymore.

There was a time when you could find amazing shit thrown in the discount bin.

Mega Man 2
Thunder Force V
Castlevania: SotN
Shatterhand
Metal Storm
RayStorm

All stuff I found in discount bins before internet was more common than cable television. Those were the days when knowing your shit about games was an art.

I vividly remember finding good stuff in discount bins before EVERYONE had internet. Back when those who did had to wait a good 90 seconds for the beeps and boops to stop before they could surf at a blistering 28.8 kbps... IF you got a good connection. Think about the timeframe on that. Like late 90s-early 00s. AT LEAST 15 years ago, and I can recall things back then pretty clearly, so I had to be at least 10ish, right?

So am I 15? Do the math buddy.
More like 15 plus another 16.
I'm old enough that I should be ashamed to be on 4chan at all.

But I guess you're right. All games from PS1 that got a greatest hits label (only one of which did on my list) are common knowledge and hardly count. It was super easy to whip out your smart phone and Google "list of greatest hits PS1 [which, by the way, would have been called PSX at that time] games" in a matter of seconds back 1999.
Yup.
Clearly I have no clue what I'm talking about, and context is irrelevant.

Yes it's greatest hits but that's hardly relevant. Not every greatest hits title was a gazillion seller like the Final Fantasy titles. And at that not everything greatest hits was a massively popular juggernaut. Despite its greatest hits reprint, SotN didn't gain the cult status it enjoys today til AFTER its heyday. And again, that's only ONE of the games I listed. So, good job cherry picking there. At least you're sticking to your guns.

Besides, you seem to be taking the flow of knowledge and info in a pre-internet world for granted. I'm beginning to think you're either the underage kid you're accusing others of being, or a blatant troll.

I thought X5 & 6 were unforgivably sub par for Mega Man games. Way worse production quality, lower levels of polish, and I hated the little mini upgrades they made you juggle that infected the series right through X8.

But such is the curse of a Mega Man fan.

I don't do that for a profit. I just don't find any value in the original JP discs, and I like being able to at least store my translated versions in a box that represents the game itself. I could repro but imports are pretty damn cheap so its fine.

as someone who recently sold his retro vidya collection I can tell you that the prices currently are out of control. you are like 7-8years to late to start collecting games at reasonable prices.

from my own personal experience I can tell you that you will NEVER ever play all those games that you are going to buy. you will spend most of your time checking ebay for certain games in certain conditions/prices, this and not gaming will take most of your time.

its a horrible hobby, Iam glad I sold everything. just imaging that I had 10000~€ euro in old shit just lying around, collecting dust, makes me mad again.

stop before its to late.

there is no hidden place that no one knows of.
the cheapest place by far is still ebay.
sure you can buy stuff directly on boards but people usually expect retarded prices there.

prices for retro games nowadays are indeed higher than they used to be, thats a fact.
dunno how long this shit is going to last I dont know.

Yo, pee/ps/.

Is the PS1 version of Discworld 2 PAL a good buy for 20 €?

I love the Discworld novels and adventure games, but is it a sub par port or something? I'm asking because I know could easily emulate it, but if it's a good catch I'll get it. I also haven't played the first one.

Not OP

But I've sort of been doing the same on the suide as I expand my Ps2 collection.

I've only got FF8 and Resi 3 right now (I sort of went off tangent and became infatuated with the dreamcast)

I've emulated a fuck ton of Ps games over the years and I think I pretty much want to try for:

Brave fencer musashi
Metal Gear solid
Symphony of the Night
Resi and Resi 2
Einhander
Spider: The Game
Tail Concerto
Tail of the Sun
Wild arms
Medievil
Tales of Destiny 2 (Eternia)
Threads of Fate
Xenogears

And yes I've played Silent hill, crash and spyro. Didnt really like any of em.

Not that anon, but I believe he's implying you can still find these games for low prices if you actually hunt for them offline. My local mom and pop store makes 99% of their profit selling new titles and skylanders shit. The owner prices his retro stuff 20% below the ebay average for the title in the last six months. I also still find plenty of amazing deals at the local flea market during the summer. It's doable is all I'm saying, but I don't fault you at all for quiting the game.

You gotta play this one. It's a 2.5D platformer where you move in a 2D plane in a 3D world, and you can interact with things in the background and foreground. One of the core gameplay elements is grabbing and throwing enemies, and you can also use them to double-jump.

It has great controls with a perfect jump-ark, good level-design, a superb soundtrack, and a solid, intriguing story filled with unexpected twists.

Mike Matei made a pretty good review of it, even though he does keep pronouncing "Phantomile" wrong and the first thing he talks about in the video doesn't make any sense. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6-_XxHDCi0

That Wii version is awful, by the way.

I played this one briefly when I was on a big download-n-burn kick. (I modded my PS1.)

I felt like it was almost offensively easy, but I could still recognize the positive points of the game. I'll admit I was on some super harsh critic shit at the time and had my head far up my own ass. I'd actually be interested in trying it again.

>99% of their profit selling new titles and skylanders shit.

How does anyone make a profit on this kind of stuff? New games and the like are almost always priced to near cost. The stores are letting them go for only dollars and pennies more than what they paid to get them in stock. Most game stores (chain and independent alike) make the bulk of their profit off of used goods.

Not arguing the point that good deals can be found in mom n pop shops if you're willing to look. They can. This is fact. And unfortunately for them, the best deals come from places that don't know exactly what they have on hand... like that pawn shop a buddy of mine snagged up some Neo Geo titles on a buy two get one deal. (lol.)
I'm Disagreeing that skylanders and new titles are what's keeping them afloat.

There's a reason places like GameStop try to pressure you with their subscriptions and preorders, and at the more aggressive locations, talk you in to the preowned version of that new game you were about to get, and it's because it's infinitely more profitable than just selling brand new titles.

How far through the game did you play? It gets difficult in a few places, especially near the end, and the story definitely goes places. Also, if you're looking for a real challenge, try collecting all the dream stones in each level after you've beaten the game.
