Practice for getting THE EYE.
THE EYE allows you to quickly analyse the whole stack to see possible chains, all those blocks nomally lead to you getting overwhelmed by their sheer amount so you just overlook many possibilities. Record your essions and reanalyze them. When rewatching you will be surprised how often you simply overlooked a possible chain and have more than one "GODDAMMIT IT WAS RIGHT THERE!" moment. Also you got to train your fingers, the cursor just loves to jump when you try to quickly change position by just pressing a little bit in the wrong direcion.
Be quick at removing those block towers that typically develop on the side of the playfield, train how to effectively drop those blocks from them in case you don't immediately find something to clear under them.

But as a big surprise I am sure the definite answer is- oh wonders- practice. I became good at TA becasue of simple playing it religiously over and over so that noone wanted to VS me anymore...

It's all about the combos. Focus more on adding lines to your opponents screen than shrinking yours. Play offensively, not defensively.

Puzzle, just like Rhythm games are games you just need to keep on playing.

You'll learn how to pick up patterns and shit over time.

Also Pokman Puzzle league was great because of the 3D mode. Is that in any other Tetris Attack game?
I would love that on modern hardware.

I rocked this game up until the 3d mode and it destroyed me from there on out

This guy lies. It's about chains, not combos. In all honesty large combos (10+) are hugely underscored in terms of garbage when a small chains (x2+) out performs them in both amount of garbage and type of garbage (chain garbage can only be cleared one line at a time.)

Anon, it really is a matter of practice. If you love the game, just keep playing Vs until you can beat it. You'll hit walls at different difficulty levels, but keep playing and you'll eventually overcome them.

The thing is the more you play the game, the more you understand the mechanics behind it just from experience. Even if someone tells you to look for certain patterns, or about advanced techniques, unless you have THE EYE as >>2756737 mentioned, you won't be able to apply that knowledge.

For instance, one of the coolest tricks I know in the game is called a "sneak". You can move a block through a match if you're fast enough, and in the right situations, this is an extremely useful tool. It's harder to do on the N64, but on the SNES the A and B buttons are arranged such that you can slide your thumb over them to be fast enough.

Also thinking about the N64, it's better than the SNES version because the AI is superior, however I feel the game doesn't play as tightly and that the N64 controller sucks. I strongly recommend you play the SNES version and beat the computer through Super Hard before picking up Puzzle League.

I don't toot my own horn often, but I'm _really_ good at this game. I rarely play Vs anymore because there is no challenge. I try now to max my score out as fast as possible in endless (99999 on SNES), and my best time was around 4:30 min. Pulling off x13 left and right and squeezing off some bonus matches at the end is as good as it gets. This game is like my violin.

I sincerely believe this is the best puzzle game ever concieved for it's simple mechanics and incredibly deep game play once you've understood the consequences of those mechanics.

To add...

It's all about the skill chains. Nothing else matters. It's too difficult and time prohibitive to set up non-skill chains.

The one bit of advice I have concerning skill chains is that you do not want to "babysit" a chain about to happen. What I mean is if you set up a skill chain but it requires you to carefully time a block move to work, then you are limiting the amount of time you have to set up the next skill chain since you have wait with your cursor idle.

The better strategy is to set up a skill chain that will connect even if you put down the controller after setting it up. This allows you much more time to put the next skill chain together.

Not to say babysat chains aren't useful, but if minimize how much you do it, you'll have a much more formidable game.

what the shit?

also OP, as already said by other anons, just keep playing.

Anyone played Baku Baku Animal? I got to beat the game once, hard as shit against the CPU.

I was also pretty good at Puyo Puyo, but last time I tried to play, the CPU handed my ass to me on stage 2, shameful.

Honestly the Pokemon anime theme ruins this one for me. I much prefer the SNES version for that reason.

I too hate the Pokemon wallpaper, but then again TA has always had identity issues. I look past it because it's the only way I get to play even remotely challenging Vs because no one likes I know likes to have their ass handed to them.

Lots of good advice in the thread. Also, go through the puzzle mode. It will give you some first hand experience and teaches you to recognize chains and combos.

Play Tetris Attack instead. The presentation is better and the controller is more appropriate.

Then, play it some more. And more after that.

>> No.2761612

>>2761601

That is good advice OP. Listen to it. For experienced players TA can be too easy because of lag and the AI waiting during garbage- block transformation instead of preparing more chaiins etc. but for someone who wants to learn it that is even better.

You should also then play it some more.

what's the difference between playing on a SNES controller and a N64 controller? Assuming the pokemon TA one can be played with the d-pad.

>Play offensively, not defensively.
Puzzle League is extremely defensive because garbage generally doesn't interfere with your play area. So long as you have a three clear ready to go, no amount of skill on your opponent's part will do anything. Large chain garbage actually helps the recipient because they can freeze their stack for minutes at a time as it dissolves.

Ideally, you only do score attack, not vs, for multiplayer, as matches will absolutely never take more than two minutes there.

Some people say the original Panel De Pon game (as in the JP non-Yoshi version with the fairies) has harder AI than Tetris Attack. TBH I only played through it once, and I did have a bit of a hard time with it, but I cannot corroborate as to why it was harder than TA for me.

I personally didn't notice a difference either. Panel de Pon/Tetris Attack is my speciality, I don't think I've ever lost a vs. game. Maybe my friends just all sucked.

I found PdP to have slightly better AI, but not a huge jump.

I did have some 30 minutes matches vs the Super Hard final boss, though, which is something I never had on TA. Those were pretty intense and fun as fuck.
