Previous thread - >>2724909

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Does anyone have a emulation setup or something like that? I wouldn't mind tracking down a CRT monitor I can hook up to my PC or something akin to that.
I can't afford to mod all my shitty consoles for RGB + everdrive.
I use retroarch + some shaders depending on the core, and it looks ok (apparently at 4k it looks better, but I don't have the modern graphic card), but I'd like to know what other people use as their setup.

Middle red into "R/R-Y", Green into "G/Y", Blue into "B/B-Y". Make sure you have that switch of the right flipped to "Compo"

Bottom White or Red can either be fed into the audio in next to said switch or into an external audio setup along side white; When PVMs/BVMs have speakers, they tend to be mono only.

Note the bottom set of inputs for comparison.

Well, I only own BVMs but this should be an easy enough answer here. Yes, you do need BNC/RCA adapters (only 3 per channel since the audio is still RCA) and if it's anything like the BVM, it can accept component video via the RGB/Analog inputs (assuming Sync on Green).

After that, green to green, blue to blue, and red to red (Worked for my PSP, at least).

RetroArch is perfect for emulation on a CRT monitor. You can easily set it as a secondary monitor, and have RetroArch output to that screen automatically at whatever resolution you desire, as long as you have a modeline set up for it. You can even make your monitor effectively emulate a top-end BVM with this guide:

Just got my Mega Drive in the mail today and upon hooking it up to my PVM with one of those combined audio/RGB MD cables I was greeted with this. I know I have everything hooked up 100% correctly but this to me looks like a sync issue? Any ideas?

>> No.2746030

Probably not a sync issue, or not directly. What happens when you push not the line/RGB switch but the RGB/YPbPr switch? and int/ext sync button on both the former settings?

If it's not either of those, might be the cable? I have no idea what you're actually describing as a combined audio/RGB MD cable.

Hm, well I bought the console from an online seller that also offers modifications. I got region and language modding done but nothing else. However, one of the other modifications available was having RCA outputs installed on the back that circumvented the default output (I guess the logic was not needing to buy an AV cable made for the MD but instead being able to use any old RCA AV cable). I didn't see the point in it and so didn't get it, but do you think the modification could have been done on the inside without the RCA outputs being installed?

>> No.2746097

Why do some PS1 games, like Resident Evil 1 and 2, have a black space on the left side of the screen with little to no black space on the right side, resulting in a picture that isn't centered? Some games, like Street Fighter Alpha 3, fill the entire screen with no black space on either side at all. All of my Saturn games are perfectly centered with the same amount of black space on both sides, including the Saturn version of Bio Hazard.

I thought it was a problem with the TV that I used to use until I got two Trinitron monitors, one that was calibrated before I got it, that do the same thing. I don't even know if this is just a CRT thing...I've never played my consoles on anything else but CRTs.

Your image proves that the CRT is getting Red, Green, Blue, and Composite video, so the only thing that you're really missing for a proper image is ground.
I'm assuming the mod you're talking about is just for composite video+stereo audio which would really only consist of mounting RCA jacks and running wires from the video encoder for video/front headphone buffer for audio.

Thinking about it again though, do you have the headphone cable connected to the system?

If not, does connecting it change the problem at all?
If you do, I'd say it's almost definitely a problem with the cable, as the front headphone jack also has a connection to ground and will at the very least give a smeared but proper colored picture.

Could you please stop blaming every fault on capacitors?
Bad colors are very likely to be caused either by a too low saturation setting or burned out phosphors.
Worn out capacitors in CRT TVs/monitors usually tend to cause a total failure (doesn't start or turns off) or wrong deflection (bad geometry).

About that...

In-store prices reflected this when I first went to get adapters for my first PVM. Amazon or ebay are much more wallet friendly, and will be of the same general quality.

If the breakout cable is in-fact the problem, bypassing it should solve the issue.

If the converter you're talking about is a CSY 2100 or one of its clones, I've heard the colors some times need to adjusted to better match what the standard RGB picture would have, but I don't believe it should be reduced that much.

Bit of rambling-
Assuming your SCART cable is using composite video for sync, have you tried just connecting the sync line of the breakout cable to the composite input of the PVM. I'm just curious what the result would be; In a normal situation, you'd get standard composite video but if ground isn't connected I don't know what'll happen to the picture. Possibly the same color inversion as before but with lower quality video.

Not quite video game related, but more vintage video signal related.

Any idea why a VCR would suddenly run into weird field mismatch/sync problems? The video almost looks like it's playing in 240p based on the test lines at the top of my PVM. At first I thought it was just a bad tape, but it's happening with everything I try. The VCR's own menu displays perfectly clear in 240p, something I can't remember if it did before.
It has auto tracking, and while adjusting the channel buttons on the front do affect the picture, it doesn't do anything to the sync issue.

I have not; I did get it second hand though, so I have no idea what type of wear it may have seen previously.
When rewinding in high speed mode, there does sound to be some sort of slippage occurring, so I guess it could be a problem with the head(s) not spinning reliably or consistently. I'll definitely give it a look once I get it open.

Well then you are moving the goal posts from the original absolute statement of

>And 480p is strictly better than 480i for every possible reason. If you can get a 480p CRT to upgrade from 480i, do so.

that either you or some other misguided anon posted earlier. The PS2 library is rife with a *majority* of non-progressive games, and playing 480i games on a 480p-capable CRT HDTV forces display-side deinterlacing that adds latency and potentially degrades the image. GCN and even Xbox had their share of non-progressive games too.

The CvS series was actually designed as NAOMI-native titles with backgrounds that are amazing at 480p, but the sprites were just not given that same attention. You don't just throw that away as a 240p arcade situation; a NAOMI-native game is practically a Dreamcast-native game.

The bottom line is that actual examples exist where the blanket statement is proven wrong and the advice given based on that statement is proven not to be universally applicable. No, 480p is not "strictly better than 480i for every possible reason." Because there are actual examples of native games designed in 480 lines that look better in 480i, full stop.

Every 6th gen game can be run in 480p (either natively or with homebrew). Without deinterlacing, scaling, or any nonsense.

I don't know if you even know what interlaced images are, but I'll write it out just in case.
480i and 480p are literally the same image. 480i is a 480p image with even/odd lines missing. Never in the history of graphics has somebody drawn a sprite to have half the lines missing in every other frame. If a game is rendered in 480 lines, it is strictly better in every possible way to display it in 480p over 480i. "full stop"

Of course, but the point was that S-video (generally considered worse quality than scart) IMO on this particular TV set was able to achieve essentially exactly what Scart did.

I'd like to do more testing though. SMB2s graphics are fairly simplistic. I should try with super metroid or street fighter next to see how Svideo handles the more complex backgrounds.

All in all more people should give Svideo a chance before dumping money into cables, adapters and switches (depending on what CRT they have). I'm gonna guess there are plenty playing snes, n64, ps1, and other systems with Svideo output without modding but are using Scart just because they hear it is better when in actuality (again depending on the TV set) it is the same.

NOTE: this is just based on the preliminary testing I did, there are still tons of variables out there.

Remember, that transcoder is encoding the source RGB signals and while in a perfect world you'd get out the same exact quality that was put in, it is not always the case; Especially with that model.

Hey guys, I want to get a new CRT to replace the shitty old Zenith one I've had for ages, and I want a good one so the image isn't cut off again.
But I have a hard time telling which TVs actually have good image quality. Like, I can tell obviously that some of the ones on display at Goodwill and garage sales are complete shit, but then on the better brands (Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, etc) some of them look like total crap, even if they're relatively recent models and all that. I just don't want to buy one with a terrible image due to a fucked tube or something.
So how do I know the tv isn't fucked?

I watch a ton of stuff on my PVM via svid and RGB. Here are some things I've learned:

>PVMs love good sources
This sounds kind of stupid, but high end consumer sets do a pretty good job of covering up artifacts from lower quality stuff, whereas professional sets are going to show you where it's wrong. The biggest culprits are low quality VHS rips (as the rare ones usually are) and anything that was ripped <640x480 or at a very low bit rate, which is also a thing for most TV shows that weren't ripped in the last few years. Mind you they still look a lot better than upscaled on a LCD, but it's not going to magically make everything look good.

That said, I prefer to watch 720p content letterboxed on my PVM sometimes instead of on my nice PC monitors.

>Use MadVR
Kinda goes along with above, it's got good upscaling and downscaling which you'll need.

>PVMs have no (good) speakers
Don't forget that. But, I like the speaker on mine. You'll need to combine the signals to run stereo through the single speaker, best way to do that is in software. Even then it sometimes gives you strange results.

Also I've noticed some minor shadowing on my sets. It's a bit worse through svid but generally not that bad for videos, but if your mouse cursor happens to pop up you can notice a horizontal band wherever it is on the screen.

If you watch a lot of newer content you might be better off trying to hunt down a SFP tube set like a XBR910 or 960. They aren't any good for most /vr/ content but are much better for video content. They go a great job of smoothing out source impurities and have better blacks in my experience.

All of that being said, with the right content, PVMs look fucking great. And there's a certain amount of nostalgia knowing that the show you are watching might have been produced on a set similar to the one you are using.

There's 3 ways you can connect a Wii to a 480p VGA monitor that I can think of:

- A PAL Wii, or homebrew to change an ntscWii to PAL to get RGB. Then a rca to VGA adapter.

- A Wii "VGA" cable. Somewhat janky, because it uses a passive-ish converter to get RGB from the component video.

- An active component to RGB VGA converter.

I'll tell you right away, it's not just you. I had some bad audio skipping on my copy as well.

I've narrowed down issues like this with PS1 games to typically being caused by bad rips.

I found this out with Misadventures of Tron Bonne. Absolutely horrible audio and FMV skipping (intro) before I burned a copy of the Redump version. Rarely had an audio skip since (inevitable on CD-Rs for some games due to lower reflectivity than CD-ROMs unless you have a godly laser). Of course, my disc in question probably needed cleaned too but you get the idea.

The reason for this is most modern computer monitors (CRTs included) cannot display 240p since it requires a 15KHz horizontal refresh rate (most are about 31KHz). Yes.

Here's a shot of my grandma's TV from the early 80s.

The blue connector is fully wired (RGB) and the other one is just composite (because the manufacturer got cheap); the set supports SECAM, PAL, and NTSC. Consumers were expected to daisy-chain SCART stuff over the RGB connector, hence most cheap TVs having only one RGB SCART. I'm guessing the manufacturer here understood that not all devices would be daisy chained, hence the second port (probably for VHS, since that's only composite).

Depending on the quality and size of the TV/Monitor used, chances people won't see much of a difference between S-video and RGB Scart.

If I would have known that a few years back I would have spent more time and effort buying a better quality monitor. I likely would have focused more on getting an 800 line BVM by S-Video instead of a 600 line PVM by Scart/RGB

Here's my understanding of it:

Basically, the resolution of the tube is based on the speed of the circuitry that controls the yolk. The Electron gun in the back of the tube shoots out a lil stream of electrons, and the yolk uses a bunch of electromagnets and complex electronic magic to bend the stream and scan it across the face of the tube. Remember that it scans left to right as well as top to bottom. A very rough example of this in maths:

15khz horizontal refresh rate means that it takes ~0.000066 seconds to scan one horizontal line. So if you multiply this by say, 240 lines, you get a number pretty close to 0.016, which just happens to be 1/60th. Thus, it can do that 60 times in a second, or scan 60 frames per second.

What does this have to do with 'line count'? Nothing! That's the whole point! Line count is just something about the grill/mask on the tube and the phosphors? I'm not sure about the details but basically it's how small the phosphors on the screen are, or something to that extent. It makes the image sharper, but has no effect on the resolution.

Also, when you think of how exactly it works, it's a wonder bad convergence and purity isn't an issue a lot more often.

In your and some others' opinion. Some people actually enjoy the ultra sharp display of PC CRT monitors and top end BVMs. Is the lack of pixel rounding and super thick scanline gaps polarizing? Maybe, but at the end of the day, they still have the most important benefits of CRT technology, which is great contrast, colors, viewing angles, motion, and no display lag, all in one package.

Hell, I'd argue even PC CRT monitors displaying line-doubled 480p still look great.

As I understand it, TVL is the number of individual dots/RGB phosphor sets in a horizontal section equal to the vertical height of the tube, *assuming* that the horizontal phosphor density were the same everywhere as it is at the centre of the tube, if that's relevant to the set in question i.e. aperture grill.

For CRT's, "resolution" often refers to TVL, and is thus an estimation of clarity, where "definition" refers to signal format. 720p is a signal format, not a resolution. With LCD, they both need to match.

For CRTs though, the number of horizontal pixels is NEVER going to match the number of phosphors, but with the halation (pixel glow) and the fact the grill/mask will chop the electron beam anyway (and light up half a pixel, say) this works out fine. GroovyMAME's switchres works amazingly well, using the (horizontal) super resolution of 2160 or whatever it is because the resolution is high enough that you can't tell the difference. It's genuinely not possible to tell the difference between that and, say 320 across, because the grill or mask is chopping things up anyway.

Sort of, but not really. Old master, editing and display monitors have what's known as a "Grade". This is basically the quality of the phosphors, and how much light you get out of them. BVMs are Grade 1 monitors, PVMs started at Grade 2. Take a look at Ikegami's two current offerings and note the difference in price. One is Grade 1; the second is Grade 2, and is half the price. When new, before any misuse or fading, even Grade 2 phosphors are really, amazingly vibrant and colourful without smearing the image all over the place, and...
>High TVL would probably be great for 480p and beyond
...480i has the same number of pixels, remember, just a lower, staggered refresh rate. High end SD tubes like in PVMs and BVMs normally compensate really well for this with that higher phosphor quality. (Not retro, but melee looks fucking incredible on a BVM).

Occasionally, for older 240p content on a worm-out high-TVL tube, things can feel a bit square, but if you sit 30cm further back things often balance out again.

>> No.2751483

>>2751471
...consumer CRTs never really hit as high as Grade 3, and were considered Grade 4 or 5 for the most part depending on quality. It hardly mattered though because no one was using them for editing or broadcast production so the industry didn't formally grade them.

I have to admit i don't know how PC monitors were tiered in terms of phosphor quality. The brightest PC CRTs you used to see were a little bit brighter than SD consumer trinitrons, when both were new. The trinitrons would have been going at 480i, but the PC monitors that were everywhere wouldn't have been very high-end. But video editing was never done on PC, save in circumstantial cases or for CGI and stuff, and by the time it was, things might already have been in flux with the rise of LCD.

I think I heard somewhere, though, that the D series BVMs and later were using the same tubes as like the FW900? Different chassis of course, and that makes a huge difference because the sets are intended for different uses. Some helpful anon might be able to shed more light, and maybe might invalidate some of what I said above. I'm sure you already know that the fact PC monitors won't scan below 31kHz makes displaying 240p far less bright vs an older SD set, everything else being equal. Even 480i might have been driven harder, older BVMs do have that capability.

I was trying to watch some DVDs on my 20L5 through my PS2, and widescreen DVDs were being displayed in 4:3...I don't know if the sides were cropped or not, but it was stretched vertically to fill the screen. When I went to the DVD settings, it showed that my "TV" type was 16:9 and it wouldn't let me change that option. The 16:9 button on the monitor would probably be helpful if it didn't show those rainbow artifacts (if there's a way to get rid of those, please let me know...I assume all monitors have those since both of mine do).

Would that statement apply to the multiformat (240p/480i/480p/720p/1080i compatible) versions of the BVM as well? What's the community's opinion on how to gauge the prices for that anyways (The D series, specifically. I already know the A series doesn't always come with an Analog Card and doesn't have the same card slot type as the regular BVMs).

Mini-rant below:
I don't want to be a downer to anyone but the apparent rise in prices isn't shocking at all if you have even a basic grasp of economics. With a static supply of healthy working monitors of high quality, no further production of any more units/parts, and demand that is only rising with a community becoming more aware of their existence, the supply vs. demand principle comes into effect. If more people want more of something but there is less available, the prices tend to rise due to a lack of abundance in the "market".

I'd say the only time you should pay over $200 for a set is if it's got very low hours AND it's a top end BVM, F1 sets and the likes. PVMs shouldn't be over 100 with the exception of the 20L5 (~150), and no one should ever pay more than $20 for a FD trinitron. Ever. That shit needs to be stopped right now.

And since the demand won't go down, the only thing we can do is try to get all the dumb normies with money to lowball the fuck out of the ebay shills. Some of these guys simply don't know what they are worth and have more money than sense, and because of them all of us are having to deal with sellers trying to move BVMs for $600.

Hi guys, /crt/ noob here. Just finished reading the pastebin.

I picked up a genesis 2 at a con last week with some games, and bought two different TVs to play it on. One was a a hitatchi ct7893b and the other a Philips 20PT6341/37. After testing them out the hitatchi has pretty good sound but the picture quality is absolute ass. The philips has better quality picture, but it's not as crisp as I was expecting. What gives? I picked these TVs up at a thrift store for $6 each, so would them being damaged in any way affect the video quality? It sounds like Sony is the way to go for a good TV, so I'd be willing to buy one in good condition online so I can get to gaming.

It's also worth noting that I'm using composite cables and not S-video. Should I find an S-video cable?

>> No.2752838

first, 90% of model 2 have ass sound.
then, genesis composite is ass.
Last, you need to mod to get s-video out of a genesis, and if you're really unlucky you might have a samsung encoder that doesn't even support s-video (on top of an even crappier composite output quality)

>> No.2752851

YES get S-video cables. Should make the video look much better.

Sadly Genesis requires a mod to get S-video output.

Also, although people may discourage it- if you are JUST getting into retro gaming you might want to consider a Super Retro Trio. NES, SNES & Genesis in one console, and SNES/Gen supposedly do S-Video really nicely.

I just bought a Super Retro Trio myself (waiting to receive it), depending on how it performs, I think that the SuperRetroTrio+Trinitron could end up being the best option for babby's first CRT set up.

Flat screens supposedly reduce glare a bit and give slightly better viewing angles, but due to the way CRTs work (electrons have to travel slightly more to reach the edges of the tube than the middle part), you might get slightly worse convergence and/or geometry at the corners. Not a big deal unless it's bad enough that the picture is just fucked.

If you're aiming for a high-end CRT like a PVM, I'm fairly certain almost all of them are curved, so there's really not a whole lot to it. If you're just looking for a standard consumer set, the flat tube models tend to be newer, have more features, and most importantly tend to have more inputs, especially component.

Beware HD CRTs, though. They're shit for retro.

Flat screens require thicker glass on the front of the tube due to how pressure from the atmosphere acts on the vacuum within the tube.

The main difference you are going to see there is weight (Flat glass monitors are much heavier. Almost injured myself moving a 30-something inch Sony Wega into a relative's house a few months ago). The Genesis itself is outputting its standard RGB+Cvid for sync. I simply disconnected the ground pin and that was the result. Reconnecting it gives the expected, proper image.

As you said, if it was missing Y, the image would not sync. On top of this, without Y, you wouldn't be able to calculate proper colors out Pb and Pr.

I already have the original hardware on my 25inch PVM.

I just got a 14 inch PVM for my desk/office and wanted something compact to just keep there and I'm too lazy to keep hooking and unhooking systems.

Also depending on how good a quality it is (which I hear is pretty nice), I think it is a great way for new guys to get into retro. If you are LUCKY you'll pay $30 for a Gen, $30 for an NES and $40 for an SNES.

Thats $100+ on consoles alone, and its a guarantee at best you'll get composite inputs for everything and likely only one controller for each.

The Super Retro Trio out of the box gives you:
- S-video on Genesis (which you couldnt get on the original without modding)
- S-video on your SNES (cable included in the box, without needing to buy separately)
- NES composite (equal to to the original US NES)
- plus two controllers that are usable for all 3 systems and are of above average quality.

For either someone JUST getting into retro and getting their first set up and are not sure if they want to stick it out, or for a second/third set up I think the Retro Trio is a nice little option.

NOTE: All of the above is MERELY ON PAPER as I havent gotten a chance to play with the Trio and determine its quality for myself. I'll take it all back and say it is shit if it is of poor quality.

Its not an everyday occurrence. Also are you talking about the Free PVM from NY?

There were 3 different websites talking about two particular PVMs being given away by the same guy, and one of them was a puny 8incher.

Its incredibly unlikely unless you feel like searching multiple times a day and waiting ages for the low percentage chance that you might get one.

It is just incredibly unrealistic to "expect" to get a PVM for free while people are spending $200+ on ebay. In the rare instance that a Free PVM is going to pop up you are going to be fighting with dozens of other people who see the ad, many of which will just offer money, and on top of that you have to hope that the seller sees your email and decides to respond.

If anyone wants a free useable retro tv anytime soon, their best bet is a trinitron- you can go on almost any local craigslist and find at least 3 trinitrons being given away for free and tons being sold for under $50.

Being realistic you are incredibly unlikely to get your hands on a free PVM. You are VERY likely to get your hands on a free trinitron. Play the odds.

And I had a pretty decent time typing that out. Just trying to be as informative to new guys as possible.

And my apologies for repeatedly typing "incredibly" its just super rare. No body should be expecting and placing their bets on getting a free pvm.

Nice you sorted it out. I emitted that hypothesis because I knew YPbPr mods of Sega Genesis consoles existed. Funny thing this ground problem is yielding a result similar to luma loss (at least, I know what to expect if it was to happen to me).

So this was just a normal RGB+SyncOnComposite mod, so the signal is more or less the same as a European model, which should work right out of the box, as those studio PVM (but not presentation ones like the 2950) already incorporate a sync separator.

>So this was just a normal RGB+SyncOnComposite mod
No mod; It's essentially just a really dirty and rough RGB connection from the console's av port. Same standard 75ohm resistors and 220uf caps on the video lines, just not in a cable and infinitely more finicky to keep properly connected.

In previous fiddling around with it, I had seen that running the system without ground would give said picture, so recreating what had happened to the anon was very simple.

Now that I've got a decent Genesis console, I think I'm actually going to buy a decent SCART cable for it;
Does anyone have experience with retro_console_accessories "boosted sync" Model 1 Genesis cable in comparison to their standard composite video cable? I'm just asking because if I'm actually going to put money into a decent cable, I'd like to know whether there's actually a decent difference in the likelihood of jailbars rearing their ugly head.
Note-I'm aware of the ntsc clock removal modification that can be done to reduce/get rid of jailbars, but I'd like to avoid killing off composite support unless I have to.

I really need to clean this screen soon.

Not sure if I can help you because I have one of the shitty Model 2 revisions (VA1.8, with terrible composite video and sound chips)

RGB out of any model 1 or 2 revision will pretty much be the same from what I understand. It's the composite video that can get really shitty depending on which model and what chip it has.

Either way, I do have the "boosted sync" cable for my Model 2. It just has an LM1881 sync stripper in the SCART plug. Used it on both my PVM's and my Commodore 1080 monitor (doesn't accept composite video as sync) and I had no jailbars at all. Looked beautiful on all of them. I'll have to take some pictures once I get unpacked from moving.

I've used a Model 2 A/V to Scart from retrogamingcables.co.uk pulling composite video as sync (it runs through a female Scart to BNC Breakout with a built-in sync-stripper).

A few things I will say about that (and I'm not certain if this is cable-specific or I just have an A/V port with poor contacts or something). The cable is sensitive to movement (will lose sync if it lays in the socket some way), it does already have the inline caps (I believe) and resistors like it should. I have also noticed that hooking sound from the genesis A/V output via the Female Scart breakout results in an output with a noticable bit of interference (not sure if this is just typical Model 2 genesis poor sound circuit problems) although I did notice I got a lot clearer sound (less interference) out of the L/R audio ports on my Sega CD directly.

Well that would explain why the Sega CD L/R audio outputs sound much better in my case. They're certainly well isolated from the video lines by sheer spacing alone.

The cable I got from retrogamingcables.co.uk wasn't shielded (my female SCART adapter is but not the Model 2 A/V half, unfortunately) so that's apparently why it was doing that (don't know about the touchy sync connection issues though other than it being composite video sync).

>> No.2754840

Using a PC CRT would defeat the purpose of an XRGB3 (in that you're taking analog video and upscaling it for use on a modern HD TV/Monitor which typically do shitty jobs of scaling/converting the output on their own if they are able to natively accept the input to begin with)

The only use I could imagine for a Scaler connected to a PC monitor would be converting to 31KHz Horizontal Frequency from another format (example, Arcade RGB 15/24KHz converted to 31KHz VGA for display on a typical PC Monitor)

please tell me your horizontal lines don't jump around on a stable image, as I've seen in the past on some larger Sanyos

Would be better if you turned off the ambient lights in the room and adjusted your camera for proper lighting of the screen, but I can say that that looks pretty nice overall. I'd like it, I think.

Had to compress mine way down with gimp, so I apologize if there are visible jpeg artifacts.

I believe it's interlaced through composite and progressive through component..

I tried hooking up multiple consoles, from a SNES, Saturn and N64 to a PS3 and Wii. Same thing happens.

The odd thing is that it's gotten worse lately.

so you're saying the image from a snes is interlaced over composite, but over RGB looks progressive...?

It's a Phillips Cineos, 29PT8422. A flat HDTV capable of multiple resolutions.

I own the generic 45 USD no-brand upscaler, and I was thinking of upgrading.

What's a nice upscaler with a nice cost-benefit ratio to purchase? I'd love to dump 300 USD on a Framemeister but the money simply isn't there right now.

>A flat HDTV
>capable of multiple resolutions
so is it a rear projection screen? That's the only kind of flat HD CRT I can think of, since the PVM-20L5 and 14L5 are the only 'direct view' CRT TV's I know of that support 'HD' (PC monitors not counting of course).

I'll look for info on it, though.

Are you going to use this upscaler on a CRT? If not, this is the wrong thread.

I'm saying I believe that's the case judging by the manuals I can find online.

The only thing I'm sure is that these lines only show in AV mode, not component, even in 480i on the Wii and the PS3.

>>2758021
Thanks. I believe that's correct, yes.

>> No.2758047

>>2758040
I don't think you understand what interlaced is compared to progressive then. That, or the TV is trying to do smart 'processing' on the image and assuming it's getting 480i when it is in fact getting 240p. That can cause interlacing-like effects, and I've seen it happen myself on some cheaper capture cards and a lot of HDTV's.

If that's the case, you may be out of luck. I'd try to get RGB out of the SNES in any case, if the TV can be made to support it.

That's no RPTV, that's a direct-view.

There are plenty of CRT HDTVs with flat tubes like that, btw. Dozens of models produced for years from every major CE manufacturer.

Anyway it sounds like it's definitely incapable of displaying 240p over component, which is a common problem. It's line-doubling the signal to 480p (or possibly even scaling it to 1080i).

>> No.2758073

>>2758069
Alright. I hadn't bothered looking it up. But I knew that a lot of HD CRT's did post-processing for some reason (guessing it's cheaper than having a separate flyback transformer winding for each horizontal scan rate).

Well I have a tale to tell and I honestly wish I had a camera with me when I was there earlier. I don't know if anyone here has seen one of these things in person but if there's an off chance that you've been to an arcade with a game called Ninja Assault, there is this phenomenally huge CRT that it uses (made in 2000). As far as I'm aware, it should also be RGB capable since it's designed for input from an Arcade PCB. I'd have to check Namco's specs for that specific cabinet for info on the tube though.

This photo does not do justice to the size-perspective of this thing in person. I'm assuming this size is similar to what'd be on a Mitsubishi Megaview or an NEC XP37.

>> No.2758101

>>2758073
Yeah, all consumer HDTVs do. The best you'll find is something that can do both 480p and 1080i natively (no scaling). If you want 240p/480i/480p/1080i all non-native, you need prosumer or pro gear.

Can't find much info on it but supposedly it's extremely rare (I could see why with a tube that large). The owner of the one I saw is John Yates (on KLOV) who runs an arcade museum in McLean, IL which currently has it in rotation. Original dedicated cab too. His probably needs the chassis looked at since there's some weird distorted vertical line on the left of the monitor.

Kind of wish I had a 14L5, sometimes. I love my 14 inch broadcast monitor (Panasonic BT-H1390YN) for when I'm closer to the screen. Looks way better up close. But I probably shouldn't be complaining!

Trying to figure out when / where that needs to be set, and indeed what that setting is. Assuming it's either something to do with the aperture grille, or you're projecting something.

Dumb question, but is pretty much any Sony PVM a good buy? I'm kind of broke at the moment but I'd rather blow $70 on pme now than spend $250 for the exact same thing a year and a half from now when all the hoarders start buying them up. Any specific models I should look out dor?

PVM-20L5 and 14L5 for 480p and 720p

>> No.2758573

Thank you. I think I'm just going to bite the bullet soon and buy one when I find one, my current TV takes up too much space and it looks like ass so PVMs seem like a really good option considering they remove both of those problems.

>> No.2758582

>>2758563
I doubt you'd want one that's too small for your viewing distance, too large for your space, black & white, or lacks the inputs you want to use. So no, you have to know more than "it's a PVM" if you're going to be happy.

>Any specific models I should look out dor?
No, because you haven't described anything about what you want to use it for. Any recommendations without that are not helpful for anybody.
