What is the best classicvania game?
I play SotN but didnt like all the bullshit RPG stuff in it

I just finished marathoning all the classicvanias.

While best is really subjective, I enjoyed 1 the most.

The tg16 version of rondo is SHOCKINGLY good. I assumed for years that it's reputation was predicated on rarity, being an expensive and cult import title for so long - booted it up earlier this year for the first time, and it quickly became one of my favorite platformers ever.

I do see why castlevania heads love SOTN so much, but speaking without any nostalgia bias, I have to say that Rondo trounces any other vania game - and I'm pretty sure I've at least tasted all of em by now.

It emulates fine but PCECD emulation is slightly complicated and as I understand it the PSP version is solid as well if that's simpler and/or more convenient for you. Just do yourself a favor and play it asap.

I have never played Bloodlines, so I can't speak for that one. Of the classics, RoB is the best one, although you can't go wrong with 1 and 3. RoB is a bit easier than those two, but it's so unbelievably great in terms of its level design, mechanics, and presentation, that you won't even mind.

I would actually recommend starting with 1 and 3 though, since I think it enhances the RoB experience. It takes what those games did, irons out a few flaws, and just turns everything up to eleven. It's really spectacular.

Just a beginner's tip for 3, since it can seem a bit overwhelming at first with its harsh difficulty and four characters: Master using Sypha. I think she is the most useful of the three partners, and her ice spell can trivialize enemies that give Trevor a hard time.

Dracula X isn't very good. I like it more than IV, but it suffers from a lot of problems.

Questionable hitboxes, dull level design, and abysmal strut speed, all make for a pretty underwhelming remake of Rondo.

Also, no bible.

Death fight on top of the clock tower was cool though.

>> No.2743179

I really like Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest. Most likely because it was the only Castlevania game I actually owned as a kid. Honestly though, I think game is shat on a little too much. I love the atmosphere and music in the game, and the obscure shit didn't really bother me as a kid, in fact, discovering new things in the game was always an awesome feeling. The day I finally beat it is one of my favorite gaming memories. Is it the best Classicvannia? No, not even close, but it's still a fun game and I think more people should give it a shot.

>all make for a pretty underwhelming remake of Rondo.

But it's not a Rondo remake, that's the PSP game.

As for hitboxes, speed, level design, etc... I dunno, it feels like good old classic 'vania to me. Never understood the hate for its level design, it has a lot of Castlevania 1/III vibes, and is much harder than Rondo of Blood.

Dracula X is not my favorite, but it's definitely on my top 5 or so. I feel it's severely underrated, and unfairly so.

Same story, same music, same enemies, same bosses. I'd say it classifies as a remake.

>Never understood the hate for its level design

I think it's just dull. I can't find a more fitting adjective. Too many vertical rooms with stairs and flat platforms, with little to no variety. Trudging through the mud in alternate stage 4 is painful. Reusing certain enemies over and over. There's a real lack of memorable and unique sections.

I have played through both RoB and DX roughly the same amount of times, and I could easily draw from memory every single level in RoB from start to finish. With DX, no chance.

>and is much harder than Rondo of Blood.

I think Dracula X is a little harder, but it's not really something in its favor. I feel a lot of that comes from the shoddy hitboxes, slower movement, and a completely botched implementation of the backflip.

If you could play through Dracula X with Richter's controls from RoB, I think it would be easier than RoB.

Are you sure?

I'd call it more like a "reimagining" of Rondo. The levels are completely different.

>Too many vertical rooms with stairs and flat platforms

I don't see that as a problem. I loved Castlevania III.

>I feel a lot of that comes from the shoddy hitboxes, slower movement, and a completely botched implementation of the backflip.

Again, I didn't ever had any problem with the controls. Feels like 'vania to me.
I think it's harder because the level design is more unforgiving, Rondo is too easy overall except for a few sections. The first level of Rondo is a total cakewalk, for example, whereas on Dracula X there's medusa heads, right on the first level.

Anyway, my point isn't wether Dracula X is better than Rondo or not. My point is that we shouldn't compare each other as if they were the same game, because they're not. I like both.

Shitty level-design and gameplay. Both Bloodlines and SC IV are better than Dracula X. CAN you make any arguments as for why it's the best? Because it doesn't the best graphics, nor the best music, not even the designs... it's not the best in anything.

Seriously, just TRY making an argument for this game. You'll realize that, while MAYBE not as bad as people make out to be, it doesn't come close to basically, any other castlevania game unless you want to shoehorn the really shitty ones.

Bloodlines is one of the only genesis games without shitty sound.

it's also much faster paced than Super IV, and the re are more colors than just purple, green and orange.

Unh, anon... That's the thing. It doesn't have any of this shit. I don't think you ever played Rondo of Blood and you are problably on a nostalgia trip over Dracula X because you played it as a kid. Maybe.

It's not the same story. Dracula X doesn't even have a story.

It's not the same music. Not even close. Nope.

Same bosses? Again. It might had 1 or 2 bosses that were the same, but all the rest? Nope.

Same levels? Fucking again, did you play Rondo of Blood? The levels are COMPLETELY different and you have diverging paths in Rondo of Blood (with different bosses).

It is NOT a fucking remake. It's not even a port. It is a complete different version, in fact, they should just have replaced Richter and made an all-new castlevania altogether. MAYBE it would get some love then.

I'd say it belongs in the same tier as the other 3 (or rather 4, I also like to include X68K as "one of the best").

Better gameplay than IV, perfect pacing, in classic Castlevania style that stays true to 1,2, and 3, with 1 and 3 being the absolute best in the series, more difficult than IV, not to mention the best 2D Castlevania graphics on a major home console that isn't SoTN, it's a fantastic fucking game.

I can't decide between Rondo and IV.

Rondo has a lot of 90's anime charm, excellent soundtrack and good levels, but it's fairly easy most of the time, it is a nice way to introduce people to classicvania though and it has aged better than the SNES ones so yeah it's good.

IV, has good and long enough levels, the soundtrack is great too but i think it suffers from the snes sound limitations, the only real technical problem with it is that it uses passwords, but that ain't anything a computer or even a flashcard can't fix.
I always liked the darker atmosphere on this one, you can't find that on the nes games and Rondo characters and overall feel is more cheerful. While the early levels are easy, the latter ones are harder than anything in Rondo, it took me a lot more tries to complete IV not abusing the continues since some of the placements of enemies/platforms can ruin some of first playthroughs if you try harder than you should like me.

Both rondo and IV have issues but they complement each other pretty well in my opinion, and both are must play in the series.

I love 1 and 3 but 3 is a bitch to complete solo, and 1 is great but it isn't my favorite.

I want to give chronicles a chance, is it worth it or is just a more polished IV?
