The latest game in the series is a piece of shit so let's talk about the good ol' days.

>be 12 years ago or so
>get THPS2 on the Dreamcast
>play with a friend
>friend makes his own character
>makes him white with a goofy fucking hat and socks up to his knees
>laugh our asses off at his stupid looking character
>start playing
>he goes up a ramp
>suddenly his character flies up at ridiculous speed
>leaves the top boundaries of the level
>starts spinning really slowly
>spins fast as shit
>takes forever to obey gravity
>eventually hits the floor
>mfw we stare at eachother
>"what the fuck did you just create bro?"
>play for a while
>character's stats don't mean shit
>he can move fast and spin as fuck
>every jump off a halfpipe takes him to the moon
>realize that there were no cheats turned on
>didn't even have a single cheat unlocked
>"hold on man let's make the character again and see what happens"
>make entirely different character
>plays like normal
>friend makes a character identical to the first in every way
>plays fast as shit, flies into the air, etc
>mfw friend somehow created THE ONE in THPS

The years went by and I lost the save files and can't remember exactly what the configuration of his character was completely, really wish I could.

THPS4 is fucking garbage. Let's not make a game where you can finish goals in a smooth run, let's make you finish one shitty goal and then have you skate around until you reach the next icon where you can press X at to do the next shitty, uninspired, unthought out challenge, in a shitty level that gives you depression to even be playing it.

THPS:
>9 levels all across america
>No manuals, lines are dependent on level design
>Only way to get good at competitions is to grind long lines (the ledges in chicago/the long grind on the wall of burnside/that challenging as hell grind around the outside area of ???)
>Manuals were unheard of
>Individual trick scores mattered much more than multipliers
>Goal of the game is to collect tapes to rise to pro skating fame, just like real skateboarding amateurs
>Secret tapes were places where you'd get a sick photograph/video for your magazine/pro demo

Clunky controls and stiff animations, not to mention an over reliance on fun, but ultimately short downhill levels keep it from being great.

THPS2:
>8 levels all across the world
>Manuals introduced a whole other level to skate lines and sequences
>The stringing of combos started to become more prevalent than individual tricks but combos weren't wholly necessary to achieve high score goals
>Goal of the game changed from filming tapes for demos to making/finding as much money as possible
>Cash as a progression tool was well implemented and balanced. If you wanted high stats, you had to make bank
>Secret tapes were in less incredible spots (Qpipe at the hangar/rail over the Banks) but still either hidden or tricky to reach
>Manuals became the bread and butter of all trick lines
>Made vert characters basically worthless
>Was literally impossible to avoid if you wanted a truly high score in competitions

Basically the most polished THPS experience on the PS1. The chopper drop level was a good ollie exercise and Skate Heaven was a literal love letter to skateboarding fans.
Spiderman and Officer Dick, along with Young Tony were cool hidden characters. Private Carrera was just a bitch to unlock, though.

THPS3, PS1 version:
>8 levels all across the world again
>Revert was introduced, bringing vert back into the forefront by allowing for long combos inside halfpipes
>Combos became ridiculous at this point, allowing players to just pit their skills against one another in amazingly long combos
>Career mode took a complete nosedive from 2, where once was a cash system to reward tackling harder goals now every goal has the same value
>Boards and Stat points became pick-ups, forcing players to hunt them out, for the dismay of many. The LA deck being particularly obnoxious.
>Secret tapes were now in places only for the sake of skating there, not providing any sort of "special" reason for them to be there.
>2 whole levels in Rio de Janeiro. As if one wasn't bad enough

The PS2 had come out at this point and it's painfully obvious that version took all of the effort. The PS1 version was a watered down version of the PS2 game AND a let down after 2's amazing everything. The Rio downhill level as the only secret level isn't even that good, with the original game's downhill levels being a lot more interesting visually and in a design level.
Overall a 7/10. Better to play than the first, not as good as 2.

PS1 THP4 kinda sucks.
Reverting on a QP is harder than most Tony Hawk games. To pull off double or triple tap move you have to press the buttons really fast, or you'll do a Kickflip+Double Kickflip and its really annoying when you have little time left in a goal. Holding a button or the stick to spin is useless, you have to tap the R or L button to get some "Do this trick with a 900 spin" goals, even with full stats your spin is shit. the Boneless is useless when you dont use it on a QP, the game tells you to ollie and press R or L to get an extra boost in height, which you'll need for some goals. If you're gonna try that one, double tapping a direction then going for a grab or a flip is a good idea, since even with grabs you have an extra trick on every direction. Grinding and Manualling is ok.

That said, the night kona level is pretty good, and the kitchen bonus level feels like something out of an Army Men game. I dont know if it makes a difference, but i played it on PSP.

tl;dr THPS4 for PS1 has some problems with its controls

THPS4 for PS1 wasn't terrible.

There, I said it.

Greeting fellow orang-utan. I also find the Duke criminally underrated by the correctly-proportioned masses. DS4 was a step in the right direction, though - but it could stand to be maybe 10-15% larger.

Been playing 3 on the Ps1 recently, burning 1 and 2 as well because of this thread. I also have the 64 versions of 1 and 3, does anyone know what's different between the Playstation and Nintendo versions? I have only vague recollections and I'd love to have a list if anyone had one of the difference between every console version.

there are some differences in levels and the only ones that i like more than the next gen version is Foundry and Rio but thats just me. I'd play them if you're a fan but not really worth it to be honest.

In THPS3, i mean. I've played the ps1 version of 4 on emu and i just couldnt recommend it at all because of how much i didn't like it compared to the ps2 version.
