Only to a moderate linux or competent computer user honestly. It's the kind of gift that will provide you with a lifetime of tech support if you give it to kids. There's a flipside though. I've been running one for nearly 6 months without issue and have enjoyed it immensely. Make sure you use decent controllers and a class 10 sd card. I'm using dual shock 3's (wireless), the buffalo snes retro pad, and the xbox 360 (wireless) controller on mine. I like the newer dualshock for the PS1 games, the Xbox 360 controller for the N64 games, and the buffalo controller for the older games. I've heard of people using adapters with other original controllers but I didn't want to bother as I already had these laying around and the gameplay is fantastic.
>Long story short, like any gift it depends on who you are giving it to. It's likely too involved or complex for your average or impatient kid.

What makes them so finnicky? It was my intention to gift one to my sister and her husband for looking out for me last year, and while they're fairly tech savvy, they don't know dick about linux.

Ideally, I'd build and configure it myself and load it with some 8,000+ roms, and they wouldn't have to fuck around with any settings or anything.

That shouldn't be much of a problem. A lot of the testing before you give it to them will be. THey have multiple emulators on various systems. Some work better on certain games than others do. If I was going to give it as a gift I'd give them a backup sd card already flashed. Make sure they know they need to shut it down through the os and not simply flick the power off. Many N64 games won't work no matter how hard you try so you can't just simply dump the catalog on them. Whatever you do just make sure you store a backup image of the sd card and drive the games are stored on so you can fix it easily. Configuration can be a bit of a bear. 8,000 roms is going to take a while. Many of these OS's need you to drop bios files into configuration folders as well. It can be done and easily repaired but setting up "8,000" working roms will be a larger task than you realize. I'd shoot for maybe 3-500 popular titles across most systems. Once you've got that working well then decide if you want to go further. At any rate be sure to back everything up. Win32 disk imager is made for this.

>> No.2710215

>>2710172
Retropie works fine out of the box in my experience. Yes, it can be tweaked and improved, and it can be difficult for a non-linux user to do things even as simple as adding roms (the main partition of the SD card won't show up on a stock installation of windows or mac os). But if it were preloaded with roms and you were planning to use it with standard USB gamepads with a sane button layout (like a microsoft sidewinder), and if you weren't planning to attempt to use any iffy emulators, I think it would actually be fine.

>> No.2710217

>>2710213
>Make sure they know they need to shut it down through the os and not simply flick the power off.
Why? I do this on my retropie installation all the time. I mean of course you wouldn't want to end up shutting it off while it's trying to save a game or something, but I think at the root menu there's probably very little disk read/write activity.

SD cards corrupt fairly easily. If you have a backup of the disk image then it's less of a stress. If you don't then you'll have to configure everything from scratch.
>>2710215
Make sure to store your roms and games on a separate usb device. Use the class 10 card for the system and bios files and a separate usb for the games. SD cards corrupt easily. It will make backups of both games and the system faster and easier in the long run.

>Class 10 sd card. It does make a difference. Samsung evo cards are cheap on amazon and are simply outstanding.

>> No.2710245

>>2710223
PS1 needs it's own bios file dropped onto the sd card and many other systems. You're going to have to choose and store a preference btw one of up to three emulators on a lot systems for specific games. This means testing each of those roms, isos, bins, etc what have you one at a time so they just work out of the gift box.

Don't get me wrong, once you learn what you're doing most of the problems I listed are solved from the controller in seconds. Too make it work flawlessly for the new user out of the box is a different matter. Also no matter how much configuration you do titles like DKC, OOT, or Golden Eye on the N64 just won't work currently.

>Basically the whole goal is to deliver a fully working product I'd guess. If you want to use 8,000 games then you need to test them all and configure them individually.

Those are good, but they are starting to fall behind when it comes to accuracy. FCEUX especially(all kinds of audio issues, doesn't properly handle half the CPU stuff, etc). Nestopia is pretty solid, but even then it only pulls 82% accuracy. The latest version of PuNES(0.97) is almost flawless, only missing one audio test and two video tests(power-up palette and scanlines), for a 96% accuracy rating. PuNES is the closest you can get to the actual hardware right now.

The truth is the original mario bros. plays flawlessly on my ps3 controller. The dpad is garbage on the 360 one so I just use that for N64 stuff. Those are the three controllers I own and I've yet to find a game that trio can't conquer. Wireless is awesome. Well, let me give you two a rundown from what I've seen.

There's Demul, NullDC, and Reicast. Though I should mention Reicast is just an android port of NullDC.(Yeah, I know of Makaron and Chankast, but they are both crap and not worth paying attention to)

Be sure to get both NullDC and Demul. Much like how saturn emulation is a tossup between SSF and Yabause and Satourne, the DC has the same problem. Some games will work better on one emu than the other. So get both. Also, hunt down the DC BIOS.

Haven't really noticed any major issues, but other than emulating Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 and Soul Calibur, I haven't done much DC emulating.

As for which of the two is better, I find NullDC to be easier to configure and work with in general, but it could be a matter of taste.

Go for it man, good times ahead.

Unzipped what? Multi-track disc rips are usually BINs and a CUE, you have them all in the same folder, you make sure the cue sheet has the proper names of the BIN files, and load the game from the CUE. What is there to unzip?

Did you people forget there is a semi-recent nointro collection of pretty much all the roms on the internet archive? No ads, no viruses, no captcha. And if you don't feel like downloading complete zipped romsets, you can check the 2013 nointro romset which has all the roms inside a giant zip which you can browse and download individual roms from.

Emuparadise is fine, but slow.

Romulation is actually pretty legit, provided you aren't in a hurry to download everything in sight. I signed up ages ago, download stuff every now and then, currently sitting on 40K points(40K Megabytes I can download). They even start you off with 10K, so you can grab whatever it is you wanted in the first place and then some. Windows 8 and later now have built-in iso mounting support indeed. This was long overdue. I've never tried it with emulators, though, I gave up on Windows eons ago.

SSF and Yabause are the two main Saturn emulator available. None of them are perfect, but you can definitely access a decent part of the Saturn library anyway and have fun. Stuff might break in game; if you're not familiar with the game, you either won't notice it or wonder why they're shit (when they're not on the actual hardware). I remember for instance stuff like static backgrounds in Wipeout, instead of seeing a "skybox" scrolling effect - this doesn't break gameplay but makes the console look weird in comparison to a PS1.

Yabause has made some great progress these last few years. SSF is the one expecting a "real" cdrom (hence, using a virtual mount point).

If you wanna do 360 games find the hardware requirements of very graphics intensive xbox games windows already lets you play directly on your laptop then exceed those specs so an emulator can be running in the background. There's a few new models every month. "the best" changes so often who knows?

As far as gpu...
Compared to processors, choosing a GPU for Dolphin is a fairly simple task. The more powerful the graphics card, the more pixels and enhancements you can throw at it before you’ll see slowdown. However, the biggest thing to watch for is making sure the GPU supports DirectX11.1 and OpenGL 4.4. Dolphin emulates a console that functions very differently from a traditional PC, and uses the latest D3D and OGL features to reduce overhead. If you do not have those extensions, performance will suffer.

NVIDIA: Due to the importance of the OpenGL Extension “Buffer Storage” no NVIDIA GPU before the Geforce 4xx series can be recommended. Despite being a bit old, the Geforce GTX 460 will handle almost any game you throw at it in HD resolutions. Older NVIDIA GPUs will still be able to run the games fine, especially within the D3D backend and in OpenGL with older builds still using the “Vertex Streaming Hack.”

AMD: Unlike the processor battle, AMD’s graphics cards actually fair very well at Dolphin. As of 4.0-1192, AMD video cards see boosts around the board because of the addition of integer math. As such, the AMD HD5770 and should run most games at HD Resolutions.

Intel Onboard: Intel HD3000 and HD4000 can run Dolphin at reasonable speeds, and can even run many games with enhancements; but they will struggle with demanding titles. A full fledged graphics card is highly recommended. IGPs older than the HD3000 are not supported.

>> No.2729273

How much RAM do I need to run Dolphin?
2GB or more is recommended. RAM speed or the amount of RAM generally has no affect on emulation speed.

You'll be hard pressed to find a new laptop with less than 4 gigs of ram on a new laptop unless it's something like a chromebook.

One question- I see that they say that most games will probably run fine with an i5 processor. Does anybody have much experience running Dolphin with an i3 processor? It seems like there is a significant price hike once you move up to machines with an i5.

I'm just saying. You can recreate the retropie project on most processors and hardware with extremely little work. It's just retroarch with an emulation station front end. It's got a better processor than you need. A better gpu than you need. An 8 gigs of ram while they say you only need 2 for $449.99. It blows the hardware requirements out of the park. It's also got a 1.0TB hard drive. I'm not recommending this laptop as you can find better ones most definitely with just the slightest tweak to a google search. For example subsitute "machine" with "pc". Just rephrase your query a few times and you'll be amazed at what you find. Check amazon, google, tigerdirect, newegg, ecost (if they still exist idk), and other reputable sites. You'd have to overclock an i3 and I can't guarantee results because they recommend i5. i5's can be overclocked to hell and back but the one on this laptop already exceeds your needs.

Yeah like that's mostly what I was asking. I was looking at that very same laptop and realized that this seemed to go beyond the requirements so maybe an i3 would be fine and about $150.00 cheaper... It wasn't really clear from the dolphin website because they don't even mention an i3. But I'll probably just end up going with an i5. I won't be buying for another 4-5 months at least. Things will probably be even cheaper at that point.

OpenEmu for Mac is awesome for the core pre 1994 games we want.

Some may be pissed when I say this...but you can drag and drop roms like iTunes for music and it displays them in an elegant way with title covers. I've only experimented with NES and SNES titles but so far the gameplay is fucking flawless. It picked up my logitech gamepad f310 like it wasn't a thing(make sure switch behind is turned to D.) And the screen has a floating bar for necessary functions(full screen, quit, save, and volume.)

One hour before I discovered OpenEmu I was fucking around with ZSNES and that shit was being a bitch. Could not set up controller, and there was lag in gameplay with the keyboard.

Put it on an old Core 2 Duo Macbook, plugged in my DS3, dragged a ROM onto it, and everything worked out of the box without having to configure anything. It also rivals RetroArch in terms of performance, with close to no input or audio lag to speak of.

That said, I like having tons of shit to configure, and OpenEmu has close to nothing in that front. Its filter/shader selection is also very limited. And its 5th gen emulation is very barebones, especially N64. As such, I still prefer RetroArch. If it's an old computer monitor, you'll connect it via VGA. If it's an old TV, you'll use S-Video or composite video, depending on what the TV can accept.

Either way, if you've got an empty PCI slot, your easiest bet is probably to get an old PCI video card with the output you need, and install it alongside the GTX. That way, you don't lose a head from your primary card driving a display that's never going to get the benefit of a modern GPU, and you don't have to dick around with configuring a modern GPU to drive a display that's horribly outdated by comparison.

One caveat: You're probably best off using a second video card that isn't made by Nvidia. I've had trouble with BIOS conflicts in the past when trying to use multiple Nvidia cards in the same box; if you get something like an old ATI AIW, you won't have that problem.

It really all depends on what you're doing. Answer a few questions for me and I'll be able to tell you.
>What's your emulator?
>What's your OS? (What's you're OS doing other than emulating? Try a fresh install if an infection is possible or you haven't for a bit)
>What's your hardware?

I'd need to know this before I got into specific settings. Anyone that tells you differently is an idiot. Give me these specs and I'll show you the resources I used to arrive at my conclusion and how I found them. Without these I'd just be guessing instead of providing informed possibilities. Tech support was done very similar to this in the dark ages. In all honesty, I could remotely log into your computer and figure out the issue in 5 minutes. You wouldn't trust an anon to do that and I wouldn't trust you and bother with it either.

Scaling reasons. Some games can change horizontal resolution at any time so using a super resolution eliminates scaling artifacts cased by fractional scaling. 3840 is a common multiple of 256, 320, and a few other common sizes that were used by games.

Tweaking the monitor maybe required because some monitors may output too dark by default when you do line insertion. My monitor has the ability to boost color levels to maximum through custom R/G/B sliders (the preset 6500K and 9300K settings are only like 50% luminance) which compensates the brightness. The "brightness" setting often washes the blacks out, so only set that as high as it allows the blacks to remain black. Contrast was maxed out on mine already, but increasing that may help too if it isn't maxed.

The result should be really good after tweaking, with a bright vibrant 240p image with sharpness like that of a BVM, especially if it's an aperture grille.

BSNES/Higan:
Pros:Is the only completely accurate emulator.
Cons:Requires you to have something better than a Pentium 4 to run at full speed.

Snes9X:
Pros:Can run on a toaster, and run 80-90% of games fine
Cons:Controller setup menu is fucked up and tends to glitch.
The inaccuracies the emulator has means you can't play all the way through Super Punch-Out!!!(U)(game will crash at Mad Clown fight), and various other odd glitches and bugs.
Hasn't been updated to fix any problems since 2011.

I'd recommend checking out byuu's "Why accuracy matters", where he shows the problems. He does mention that Snes9X 1.53 has only 1/3rd of the problems that 1.52 had, but I still prefer playing games without having to worry about stumbling on some game-breaking crap due to an inaccurate emulator. I used to not give a shit, until I had TMNT freeze hard on the boss of level 5 thanks to a shitty emulator. Now I aim for the most accurate emulators so I don't have to deal with that shit.

I've never emulated on a handheld before, I have a 3DS, how do I go about it?

Do I just get a flashcart, stuff an emulator and roms in it, and then the 3DS will read it and play it?

Can I get a SNES emulator for my 3DS with ZSNES kind of features, like rewinding, save states and that really handy feature where you can search for the most recent changed value (given a pointer), which you can then alter that number to one you want? (you know the one, you have 100hp, you type in the value 100, go back to the game, you take 25dmg, go to the search prompt, find the value that changed from 100 to 75, then alter that number to whatever)

Are there GBA emulators for the 3DS?

How do I put stuff on a flashcart, do I get some sort of USB adapter for it?

Pic related is what I'm talking about. If you play an old game without scanlines then you will see all the individual pixels as they are, which makes the game look like shit. I forget the exact steps but it kinda involved several conversions (from whatever compression it was first into a single .bin). Is there anywhere on 4chan for designated discussion about emulator netplay? If I wanted to play SNES online with other anons, should I post about it here, somewhere else in /vr/, another board entirely, or nowhere at all?

Is there any way I can speed up my N64 emulation, or with my specs am I pretty much screwed? I've been playing around with some stuff on my computer, and PJ64 (run through Wine) with the Glide Final video plugin (with best performance settings), seems to be the fastest for me. Perhaps there's something I have yet to try that worked for you though. My specs are as follows:
CPU: AMD Turion(tm) 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-58 @ 1900 MHz
GPU: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RS690M

Not sure if this has been asked (I'm sure it has though), but I'm in a bit of a dilemma.

One of my brother's clients bought him an Nvidia Shield Portable as a birthday gift because he's into technology. However, he's never been into gaming so he just let it collect dust. I decided to buy it off him for 50 bucks because I've heard good things about emulation on it.

Problem is, I've never emulated anything and know jack shit about roms, emulators, and how to install/download/play any of it.

Can anyone point me in the right direction of what emulators I should get? I've tried Google and a ton of options show up. I figured you guys would probably know the best emulators. I'm looking to emulate the following consoles:

-NES
-Genesis
-SNES
-Neo Geo
-PS1
-N64
-Dreamcast
-Old Arcade Games

Any help is appreciated. Like I said, I've done a little bit of research on the system and from what I understand, it can emulate all those systems. I just don't know HOW to go about installing/finding the best emulators and I don't know how/where to get the emulators/roms.

As someone mentioned above, retroarch covers most systems in one fell swoop, albeit its not the most user friendly interface. I find Mupen64 AE to work flawlessly with the shield if you are looking for Nintendo 64 emulation. it even supports 4 player coop and hi resolution texture packs.

THE BEST WAY to hook up 4 controllers on the shield for some coop goodness is to first buy an 11 dollar MicroUSB OTG 4-Port Hub from Brando USB. You can now hook up a usb keyboard, mouse, and charge the shield all at once and still have a USB slot to spare! Now simply buy an xbox 360 wireless gaming receiver for Windows for another 12-20 bucks. Plug the receiver into the USB port and then you can sync up 4 wireless xbox controllers at the same time. Any wired or wireless 360 controller will now work with your shield so tell your friends to bring their own controller and you're ready to roll! (PS you can hook ps3 controllers up to the usb port as well. but the D pad didn't seem to work properly when streaming pc games from steam)

Using the method above i have successfully played some 4 player super smash bros in 1080p using hi resolution texture packs on an HDTV using 4 wireless xbox controllers connected to my shield.

Just drop them in the relevant system folder. The only time you may need to convert is with .bin files and not always even then. Some emulators require the .cue file to load as well as the .bin. Isos should play nicely. Just wait till you get to the headache of certain tracked ps1 files. They can be converted to play nicely as well but I don't remember off the top off my head. I think I only ever had to do that for one game. Sorry for the rant. Just drop the .iso in the relevant system folder and you're good to go.

If they came in iso format then it's all right. What he said is that sometimes the game you download will come with the img file with a ecm at the end, like this:

game_name.img.ecm

In this case you will have to use emc tools, which emuparadise explains nicely how to use and offers the download link right at the game page.

You point that at your copy of MAME(so it knows what version you are using) and at the folder with all your MAME roms and bios files, and it will help you get everything in ship-shape. It tells you the exact file(s) that are missing so you can find them. If the ROM file is Green in romcenter, you are good to go. If it's Yellow, then it may or may not be workable. If it's Red, you need to find some missing pieces.

Is there any way to deal with the crippling input lag that ruins the emulators on the RPi2?

I honestly can't take this things seriously when even my decade old laptop is more powerful and has TV out.

>> No.2751216

So I've been getting back into emulation recently, and everything is pretty amazing now; however, I've noticed that when using a controller in both SNES9X and bsnes, there is slight but significant input lag whenever I press a button ingame, which for platformers is disastrous. Oddly, the only emulator that doesn't do this is good old ZSNES.
A quick Google search has shown that other people have had this issue in the past, but I can't find any fixes. It's not a question of whether my PC can handle the emulators, as it's pretty beefy, and I run Dolphin at full speed all the time. I hate to take up your time with this, but can anyone help me? I'd rather run games on a better emulator than ZSNES... (I'm running Win 7 64-Bit)

>> No.2751227

>>2751216
ZSNES has little input lag because it uses DirectDraw, which has little to no buffering.

The next best thing you can do is use RetroArch, run either the Snes9x or bsnes-balanced cores (preferably the latter, though the former is more than acceptable), then under video settings, set GPU Hard Sync to 0. This ought to eliminate input lag from video buffering. You can also try switching between the OpenGL and Direct3D video drivers and see which one gives you better performance, though be aware OpenGL is the more tested of the two. And if your PC is REALLY good, you can even try adding frame delay for an even further reduction. This last option is hidden by default IIRC, so you have to go to the Menu settings and enable Advanced Settings.

The whole purpose of me using the photo of the Pi2 when I start these threads is due to the fact people kept starting threads specific only to the Pi2 when it belongs in the purview of a general emulation discussion. I get you're trolling and have fun. I agree that there are better platforms to emulate on other than the Pi2 but in my experience it works fine and performs as expected. Only thing that confuses me is how to connect another controller to it. From what I've heard, people can connect it with PS3 controllers via bluetooth, but I have no idea how to do that.

Is there any way to overcome the crippling input lag that ruins most emulators on the Raspberry Pi 2?

The N3DS is far better than the PSP for emulation. It can run emulators like Genesis Plus GX, Nestopia, CatSFC Plus, and even Final Burn Alpha full speed for a ton of games without needing frameskip, which the PSP could never hope to do. The only thing the PSP has over it is PS1 emulation.

I decided to up my Emulation game and try to tackle some Dreamcast and Saturn games on my android device. Only having 2 problems though:

I have the bios files for Reicast in the right place, but whenever I try to download a Dreamcast ISO it gets downloaded as a RAR file. Even if I extract the file in Winrar, it just comes out as a folder full of smaller RAR files.

I guess my question is how to do change the RAR files to ISO?

What do you want to know about the NVidia Shield Portable? It's solid as fuck and has some really good weight to it. If someone broke into your house, you could literally bash them in the head with the Nvidia Shield and knock them out cold, then flip the screen out and play Mario.

The emulation is top notch so far, but I haven't gotten to Dreamcast games yet because I can't for the life of me figure out how to get rar files to become iso files.

I paid 180 for mine, which I think is a bit much for what I got. The seller claimed to only have looked at the system then put it back in the box. When I got it, there were scratches all on the back, a good nick on the R trigger (which causes it to wobble) and the A button is a little sticky (not as in residue, as in it sometimes sticks when pushed in).

I think the actual system is a good and solid one, and the screen is fucking gorgeous. I just don't think MY personal system is the best one out there, and I'm still waiting to hear back from the seller before I file a complaint to eBay.

That said, running it on Linux outside X (by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1) is the gateway to the best possible performance and least latency possible for emulating on a PC. Close to no input lag, and chances are you can safely set the audio buffer down to 16ms without crackling.
