man, the warioland games were all so good... 4 was a fucking downright masterpiece. I didn't really have a favorite character as a kid, I liked a lot of them, pokemon, zelda, mario, donkey kong....

You know what game it is, OP? Same one as you, except I think it was 1998 or something, a little bit longer ago than you. Wario Land 3 was not even out yet, I remember I was really excited for that one because I was such a big Wario fan already. I was just 6 or 7 years old at the time.

Even as I grew older I learned to appreciate Wario more and more. He's such a greedy asshole. He's not a flat-out villain after WL1 because everybody else is smart enough to let him keep treasure and money, and there's always a worse guy with a lotta goodies for him to steal. The fact that Nintendo made such a crude thug the star of some of their best videogames is great. I love Wario.

Nintendo sure had some great plattformers on GB. Mario 2, Wario and Donkey Kong 1994 (even if I just recently played that one) are all really interesting games.

Kirby and Megaman are also pretty important as well.

I was an edgy kid, about 15 years ago, who thought Mario was over exposed and overhyped. Found Raziel and childishly thought he was cooler, simply because he was a bad guy, and bad guys r kewl! Became instantly obsessed after playing Soul Reaver on my DC, and never gave up my love for the character.

I was a huge Leon Kennedy guy. I'd fucking bicker with all my friends on the school bus about how he was the best RE character. Sad part is, they didn't give a shit, so I was the weirdo obsessed with zombie games.

In my neighborhood, Bomberman was second only to Pokemon in popularity, so I'll always have a soft spot for the bombers. One my friends even held a small launch party for Bomberman 64.

BB Hood from Darkstalkers 3
She's one of the only video game character that made me laugh without any dialogue box.
I loved her playstyle and she was probably the most original Darkstalkers character.

Frog from Chrono Trigger
I lived near a lake when I was young and I thought frogs were the raddest shit.
His design was simple, cute. He was a badass but he was also goofy and enjoyable.
...And he introduces Magus to the plot, my favorite boss fight.

Pretty similar situation. Mario Land 2 was my fist Gameboy game, so I had exposure to Wario. A friend of mine started talking to me about Wario Land II at some point and how you couldn't die. I was intrigued, and got it later that year. Kid me was blown away by how cool Wario was. He didn't just jump on enemies, he fucking rammed them off the screen. And thus began my love for the fat bastard.

Wario is a better fucking platformer than Mario is. Sure, he wouldn't exist without the original, but his games are just so much more tight and well-designed (even Shake It! is pretty good). Plus he's truly one of the best Nintendo characters.
