What are some good shoot-em-ups that have interesting mechanics/enemies/weapons/etc? I've only played the earlier R-Types

It doesn't get any more interesting than the Parodius series and Star Parodier on the PC Engine. Though I do suggest playing Gradius and the Star Soldier series first before playing those.

Ikaruga would arguably be the most famous.

Have you played Delta? It's the best one after the original.

R-Type 1 is still the best.

Thunder Force series

Mr. Heli, you fly around at your own pace and collect crystals to buy upgrades. You can also walk around and poop bombs

Atomic Robo Kid is kinda similar, but not as good. The levels are more repetitive, and if you die on the final boss it's essentially Game Over

Not much of a Treasure fan but Radiant Silvergun is pretty notable for the relatively complex weapon system.

Einhander

You can have 3 starter ships
>carry 1 weapon, slightly buffed pea shooter
>cycle through 3 weapons, regular pea shooter
>dual wield weapons, but no pea shooter

Destroyed enemies can drop weapons which you have to snatch with your mechanical arm.

You can snatch the same weapon to get more ammo or a new one to replace your current.

Weapons have limited ammo and can be destroyed if shot at too much, so it can serve as protection if it strategically catches bullets.

If your ship isn't carrying any weapons, your invulnerable "arm" can be swung around to punt enemies or block bullets.

If your ship is carrying a weapon, you can swing your arm upward so the gun changes property like a Gradius upward angle shot, or straight missiles becoming homing, or a forward shotgun blast becomes rear aiming.

I love this game.

Okay, here are some of the best shmups on those 3 systems.

NES:
Recca
everything else u play will feel inferior

SNES:
super aleste
everything else on the system will feel inferior

tg16:
pc denjin
soldier blade
lords of thunder
lots of good ports like r-type, raiden, kyuukyoku tiger, etc, but why not just emulate the original arcade version, m'rite?

genesis:
thunder force 4
everything else on the system will feel inferior

-soldier blade
-thunder force 4

If you think they're boring, turn up the difficulty to hard. They'll seem like completely new games, esp. thunder force 4.

it's not just faster enemy bullets, but more enemies on screen, etc

Magical Chase GB on the GBC is pretty cool and I heard the TG16 original is even better.

Ofcourse you have to get Super Aleste on the SNES. The whole Aleste series is pretty fantastic. But don't forget Axelay, UN Squadron, Super Dimension Fortress Macross and Pop'n Twinbee.
And if you want something really unique, try Syvalion.

Dude, you are missing out if you haven't played
rtype delta for Ps1 definitely best rtype in my opinion with some amazing mechanics.
One I've been hooked on lately
is Android Assault for Sega Cd,
another with really cool mechanics.

>> No.2726170

I asked in a "what game is this" thread but got no response.

My favorite shmup of all time is "Phoenix" on the TI-83 calculator. Mostly because of the money collecting and buying upgrades for your ship.

Do any games have that mechanic?

I know 1942 kinda has it, but it isnt the same. I'm hoping for money collected from defeated enemies.

Gaiares is number 1!

You power up your weapon by sending out your bit to latch onto enemies and steal their attack. There are lots of different types and no one is flat out the best and finding the right weapon for the sections is a ton of fun.

Also the bosses are awesome, giant robot dragons and space princesses. You even fly though a space castle avoiding guillotines and shit then fight death. It's awesome.

This thread is full of great suggestions though.

Just play them all. That's what all STGfags do. When you really want to get into the genre, just download mame and play them all, no matter the game, as long as it's an STG it's good enough for you. Otherwise fuck off.
