2723919 No.2723919 [Reply] [Original]

Hey /vr/, I need some opinions.
I've wanted to play Seiken Densetsu 3 for a long time and I just finished Secret of Mana to get in to things (long-time fan of Legend/Sword of Mana). Trouble is, I disliked Secret. The battle system really got to me, between the awkward waiting around for enemies to become vulnerable to the final boss where you better have grinded dryad magic or else. My bro dropped out on the final boss after playing through the whole game with me just because he was tired of the bullshit.

Is Seiken Densetsu 3 very different? I've read about the multiple playable characters, different stories, and the fact that all magic comes from one level (thank god) but I'm still hesitant.

What should I know before I go in to this? What can I say to convince this guy that it will be more fun?

Its better. Its much more melee favored. You won't be waiting and you can spam attacks like no tomorrow outside of the built in animation cooldown (very fast for hawk and kevin, slower for carlie and angela, and slowest for lise and duran). Theres no charging, you gain a meter that lets you preform a special attack as you build up regular hits.

If you -hated- SoM SD3 is similar, but its very different.

I actually have no real desire to play SoM again. SD3 is just way better

Just play the fucking game for 30 minutes and see if you like it. That would be way faster than waiting for some NEETs to get back to you on an image board.

SD3 is different from Secret of Mana. I greatly enjoy it for its design, difficulty, graphics, sound, and tremendous replay value.

Kevin is the strongest character in the game. If you want to take him along, he makes things a lot easier.

As for the main character, depends on what you want. I have a feeling like the game wanted to make Duran the main character, his story is pretty stereotypically jrpg-ish. I took Hawk, and he has some fun scenes, though Riesz also comes to mind as a possible protagonist. Kevin's is fun and his "antagonist", the Death Jester is a dick of colossal proportions so that's always fun to go against.

> The battle system really got to me
It's funny because that's my main issue with Legend of Mana. Your character suddenly being stuck only facing right or left when combat starts was always super weird. That and the forging system made everything way too easy.

Pay attention to this guy though >>2724124
Just play and enjoy. SD3 is pretty great.

>> No.2724236

It was so awful that they made Secret of Evermore instead of translating SD3 for the US.

Kevin's the strongest character.

If you don't pick him for your main, make sure he's at least on your team for the first run you do.

That was inconclusive in the first place, though the theory does hold a little water.

It was probably more like they just wanted to not do a shitty localization like SoM got. That poor script had to be cut to near-death, like worse than FFVI.

We were discussing that patch in a previous thread, apparently it does more harm than good.
Melee becomes even more overpowered due to critical hits, some bosses have crazy high evasion making them impossible to hit.

Wasn't it actually because the SNES was near its end and they didn't wanted to translate it and also because while the game seems to work as intended it's actually held together with tons of duct tape and has tons of glitches, bugs and shit that just didn't work?

I can understand a little jap and they didn't cut much of the story. Afaik it's only the monologue near to the mana tree that got edited, and things like shop and status messages, etc.
I actually prefer the abridged dialogue, feels more game-y.

Secret of Mana is my favorite game but it has the worst combat system out of any game I've ever played. As much as I love the aesthetics, the fact that a certain rhythm of pressing X kills every enemy ever is pretty bullshit.

The game is balanced enough that you can choose anyone and beat the game anyways. Even the shittiest combinations can beat the game with not much problems. Don't min/max a JRPG, just play em. No one sucks enough to not be unusable, go with what you want to.

Kevin is broken however due to his wolf gimmick being glitchy or something, so he shits out damage. Riesz(light) and Hawkeye(Dark) together trivialize the game. Or just having buffs with someone who can debuff trivializes everything aside full screen tech enemies (You'll meet those near the end of the game).

Choosing a main character gives them a bit more dialogue than the others. Doesn't really do much, but it can bring some unintentionally hilarious stuff. Such as some moments where Riesz being a respectful and and well mannered bloodthirsty psychopath. Main character choice also affects who the last boss will be and what final dungeon will be. Its why I don't recommend choosing Kevin or Carlie/Charlotte as main because their final dungeon is boring and sucks dick and their final boss is a joke.

Just play the game and enjoy the ride. Game is kinda slow though, and can bullshit you at times so heads up.

Also Happy 20th Birthday SD3

What are you even talking about? The final boss is the only one where you don't need magic and dryad is the only spirit you don't need to grind at all.
IIRC the mana magic is only 1 MP and the only thing a higher level dryad changes is the duration of the spell.

While in SoM combat with regular enemies was such that you always saw clearly what was going on, somehow I felt in SD3 combat with a bunch of regular enemies always looked like a chaotic mess with much random button mashing rather than well-timed and well-aimed strikes as in SoM.

Not much. Main character only affects the final dungeon and sub bosses. People like shitting on magic characters but they don't realize there's a golden statue every couple screens that restore your mp so you can spam full screen attacks like crazy on small fry enemies.

More lines in the story, if you dont have the complete sets you will have axed content, so instead you plan to play the game 6 times, just stick with the 2 main for each quest.

*spoilers somewhat*
Duran or Angela as 1st character = Duran-Angela quest path and ending = same 3 last bosses (Loki/Darkshine Knight, Koren, and Dragon Emperor) = And a special 4th boss, the Black Rabbite

Carlie or Kevin as 1st character = Carlie-Kevin quest path and ending = same 3 last bosses (Death Jester, Heath, and Masked mage/Dark Lich)

Lise or Hawk as 1st charaacter = Lise-Hawk quest path and ending = same 3 last bosses (Jagan, Isabella/Bigieu, and the Dark Prince/Arch Demon

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Duran as 1st character = Duran's beginning and ending
Duran as 1st character + Angela on team = more dialogue and/or scenes

Angela as 1st character = Angela's beginning and ending
Angela as 1st character + Duran on team = more dialogue and/or scenes

Carlie as 1st character = Carlie's beginning and ending
Carlie as 1st character + Kevin on team = more dialogue and/or scenes

Kevin as 1st character = Kevin's beginning and ending
Kevin as 1st character + Carlie on team = more dialogue and/or scenes

Lise as 1st character = Lise's beginning and ending
Lise as 1st character + Hawk on team = more dialogue and/or scenes

Hawk as 1st character = Hawk's beginning and ending
Hawk as 1st character + Lise on team = more dialogue and/or scenes

the extra dialogue (actually I don't think there's really any actual extra scenes, sorry. just dialogue-"scenes") occurs only IN/DURING the game, so not AFTER the game is completed, or in the opening/beginning parts for each character.

>> No.2726542

>>2726512
here's an example....

if you have Duran/Angela as your first character and Angela/Duran also in your team, when you try to go into Duran's house in Forcena, Angela teases Duran in having XXX rated magazines hidden in his room.

Angela flirts/teases with Duran and i think maybe eventually kisses him

Hawk and Lise get romantic too, i think.

thankfully kevin and carlie don't get romantic... lol... but they of course care about each other.
I only wonder how much will hurt kevin the poor carlie

if angela is on your team and you defeated koren, you will get a scene where the queen regains her memory. however if you do not get this scene (due to having a different main character) but you do have angela, the queen regains her memory DURING the ending, and you skip the scene with angela flirting with the males at the end.

also, in kevin's portion, you will get different dialogue based on whether or not you had already spoken to the beast king during the game

SD3 is better than SoM, period. There very similar but SD3 just has an extra coat of polish that makes it really fun.

SD3 is only 2-player, right?
Back in the day I played through Secret of Mana 3-player with my brother and a friend with a multitap, and then when we imported SD3 we were super disappointed that it didn't seem to support more than two players.
All these years I always wondered if maybe it actually did support three players and it was just some weird 3rd-party multitap compatibility problem or something.
Or if they added 3-player support in the English SD2 and the Japanese ones never had it to begin with.

Good, but kind of watered down because its on the OG Gameboy.

>Secret of Mana
Good, but flawed. Good graphics and music, but the gameplay is lacking due to busted mechanics, wonky hitboxes, magic being overpowered and melee being severely underpowered.

>Seiken Densetsu 3
Probably the best in the series, fixes a lot of problems with SoM (although flawed in itself), customization via class change and party selection with 3 storylines based on starting character adds some much needed replayability and diversity.

>Legend of Mana
You either love it or hate it. It can feel watered down but its one of the most beautiful sprite games on the PS1. Lots of different NPC's and stories to explore and branching paths and a very unique progression system.

> Also a direct sequel to SD3, which is a first for the series.

Prequel actually. Also some things do not add up for it storywise.
>Amazon Kingdom said to be unconquerable in SD3. Gets Conquered relatively early in Heroes.
>Hawkeye is alive and the only one around. Angela is the oldest of the SD3 crew, so this makes no sense.
>Also Hawkeye is apparently a prince of Navarre since his mom is the leader's daughter. This means whats her face in SD3 he was trying to save was his Cousin, which was never mentioned to be.

It was weird. Heroes main problem was unit pathing being the absolute worst. It wasn't a bad idea but it was executed poorly.
