Seriously? That's pretty much exactly the opposite of what needs to be done. The board is too slow as it is. Soon it might as well be a conventional forum of which there are already plenty.

It seems like when there's even more than a slight sprinkling of chan culture in a post, it gets hit with the GBT/V/ response.

Are you few other serious retro gaming faggots such faggots that you're actually offended by being called faggots on 4chan?

Yes, clearly what we need is a fast-paced board of trolling (I only played this game for 2 minutes and it was artificial difficulty trash, everyone who disagrees with this is a nostalgia faggot), reverse-trolling (company A objectively shits all over company B), banter (did RPG character C get cucked by RPG character D?), and everything else of that ilk, y'know, for funzies. Are you talking about /vr/ or about retro gaming? Because /vr/ WAS big for quite a while - one of the jewels in 4chan's crown and us gold OGs with our deep knowledge of not just the games but the CULTURE or retro gaming were the ones pulling it together.

The beauty of /vr/ was getting to pass that real legit culture from the 80s and 90s on to young people picking up the retro gaming trend and sincerely wanting to broaden and deepen their appreciation of it.

There are even more of those kind of people here than there ever were but alongwith them (and sometimes 2 sides of same Anon) are trolls who seem to REALLY upset a lot of the more knowledgeable posters.

I think that's the real heart of what's to blame for the oldfags becoming less and less willing to maintain the overall quality, to derail shit-threads INTO quality threads and take proper advantage of the attention grabbing quality they possess.

Personally, I started posting a lot less during the over-zealous janitoring period where all kinds of threads were getting deleted, including 95% quality threads.

I actually thrive in this less-moderated Nagasaki Hiroshima owned environment but I see SO many other posters that I know could enrich the board just hollering gbt/v/.

/vr/ is going to be a slower board due to its very nature of discussing a concrete number of products (anything from 1999 and earlier). If you want new content, you're going to have to encourage participation.

I think the Doom and RollerCoaster Tycoon generals have the right idea. If it's a PC game, encourage and support the modding communities. /vr/ needs better, more vigilant moderation. Without that we've become vulnerable to opportunistic derailment. I'm not sure how to respond to spoonfeeding dilemmas (first instinct is to get the hard-to-find stuff into the open), but sticky-ing "what's the name of this game" threads would serve many requests from passers-by.

It doesn't bother me that the board is slow, but it seriously bothers me that you only want to talk about the same shit every month, every week, every day. If you have been here for a month, you've seen everything. All the Super Metroid is great, the Earthbound is beautiful/overhyped, the Doom mega-, the what am I getting into, should I buy this, what are the best youtuber and best handheld emulation threads. It's all there is to this board.

Which saddens me. We don't have to bother with new releases, why don't have to wait for new games. We could be discovering the undiscovered and overlooked games. Find Japanese exclusives that are actually playable without knowing Japanese or even translate them. But instead it's Mario and actually console wars. You are still fighting console wars. It's hilarious.

>> No.2722651

Pretty much what everyone else is saying:

>Every day the same threads

It doesn't help that the board is slow, and your average 4chan poster is too stupid to use the catalog function, which causes multiple of the same threads all the time.

Occasionally theres a good thread about a game that has genuine discussion, but it mostly devolves into shitposting:

>X popular game is over rated
>Y less popular game is under rated

>What am I in for?

>I just downloaded all the NES games, what should I play?

>Meta threads/Rules threads and "go back to /v/" as a response

The worst. The absolute worst. I honestly wouldn't mind the board nearly as much if all of these were a bannable offense.

I don't even give as much of a shit of discussion of a long running series, like Metal Gear, Resident Evil, or Megaman or whaever goes into Non-retro territory because that is just logical progression of the discussion and you're mostly discussing the series.

But the second you even mention non-retro its
>>>>/v/
>Go back to /v/
>non-retro
>mods mods mods

-That- is what derails discussion and threads.

Go ahead and report posts that are non-retro. The mod -will- delete them. I know from experience. He's just unreliable, since obviously he dosnt get paid.

People seem to think /vr/ has some higher quality of posters, but honestly, its always going to be the same retards.

1.
I think we are going to have to face the issue that people more and more want to discuss PS2, GameCube and GBA. I am a believer that we should have another video games board, segregated by generations. My solution (though flawed) would be something along the lines of this:

Board 1 - Old /vr/: Essentially /vr/ as it is, with PS1, N64 and Dreamcast ousted. (Roughly gaming pre-1995)

Board 2 - New /vr/: PS1, Dreamcast, N64, AND PS2, Gamecube, GBA XBOX (Roughly gaming pre-2005, post-1995)

Board 3 - /v/: modern gaming

2. I think "hazy" discussion topic should be fair game to discuss on either side of the border in this scenario, meaning: PS1/N64/Dreamcast discussion is encouraged for new /vr/ but is accepted on old /vr/ as well.

Again, this suggestion clearly has flaws, but I would like to point out that there is a big shift in culture with the gaming generations particularly in the shift from 2D to 3D and from first gen 3D to the following generations of 3D (ie PS2 is more similar to PS3 than PS1 is to PS2).

The problem of this board is definitely not the range of consoles, but that we don't even use the full range.

I have the feeling most people on this board are old, have a job, maybe even a family and don't have the time to play new games. But then again, most discussions turn into shit rather quickly and I was hoping adults with job and family wouldn't do that anymore.

>> No.2722790

>>2722769
That's what I was suggesting though, just included /v/ to try and express what "eras" of gaming could be discussed where.

I think a /vr/ split is unavoidable without sacrificing a lot great content/discussion present on the board today. Many PS2, GameCube, Xbox and GBA threads would likely gain more popularity over threads currently present on this board today, pushing them off the deep end of the catalog.

I would warmly welcome a slow-moving /vr/ if it meant splitting the current board to accommodate a slightly more modern /vr/

Dude, /vr/ has been slow as fuck for as long as I've been here. I didn't see as much discussion for it that early on, but I'm probably not saying anything new here. Retro is not a time period as far as I know. Things fall out of fashion, age, they become retro.

I think as the board grows older, it should start to incorporate newer games. Of course there is no way to moderate it so only games from 2001 are discussed or anything like that.

I'm just saying, even from day one I felt like if it didn't incorporate newer games and consoles as time went on, /vr/ would stagnate like fuck.

The definition of a modern game is subjective. Once I was laughed at on another board because I wanted to talk about PSP, and many considered it a dead system, which's games does not matter anyomre. As far as I know, the PSP went out of business "officially" 2-3 years ago. For some, even that's way back in the past.

The definition of a retro game is a little bit more objective. You can seperate them by dates or by generations.

I see two options: make one /v/ board again with 30-40 pages, so there shall be room for everyone, or let /vr/ have anything which is not current. So even PSP, DS, Wii, PS2, XBox360 and so on, and leave the really modern and actual stuff for /v/ to discuss.

I've seen the opposite happen far too often as well. Hardware fags shitting up emulation generals.

>Why did you turn away?
Because it was getting close to release of MGSV:TPP and I had to avoid using any internet sites that weren't work related/email for the past two months until I could have the money for it (I just moved and had no real disposable income) and could finish it.
I finished it two nights ago.
It wasn't worth it.

Huh, that was my thread and I never went back to check on it because I got busy.

maybe they thought it was advertising? Not like I'd bother to collect that many N64 games, I went the flash cart route.

>Why did you turn away?
Gauntlet threads die out too quickly these days.

People are too salty. The same arguments keep coming up because every time price comes up emulators and collectors butt heads. The janitor deletes threads he dislikes. There is almost no tolerance for tangently related topics. People on this board want there to be even less discussion than there already is. The library of retro games is so huge niche titles garner no discussion, and popular titles have been discussed to death.

Because I like emulation. I like the fact that I can play an old game and listen to music or podcasts at the same time. I don't want a rat infested, fire hazard of a house with dusty junk filled shelves. But everyone here seems to get butthurt over it.
