Black Dragon

This game is the definition of artificial difficulty.

I'm talking about those fucking falling rocks.

First of all, play the Japanese version before posting please.

Second, please play the Japanese version before posting.

I've played and beaten the American version long before trying the Japanese version, and it was a pleasant if average game.

But the Japanese version, holy shit Crapcom, adds all these freaking falling rocks of doom everywhere that are literally unavoidable on your first couple playthroughs. Those rocks were literally tacked on to a finished product to kill the player - if that's not artificial difficulty then I don't know what is.

Funny thing is that the American version is an easy game, but the Japanese version is fucking frustrating and unacceptable solely because of the falling rocks. This shows you that artificial difficulty is never a good thing and can ruin a game.

American version: 7/10 lacks substance

Japanese version: 5/10 shitty artificial difficulty

Don't avoid my question and go off on a tangent.

And once again you're assuming things. Gun.Smoke is one of my fave arcade games of all time, and I'm quite good at it. I can beat the difficult arcade version using a quarter, and no I don't use autofire.

I'm not complaining about difficulty, I'm talking about fucking traps that are designed to kill the unaware player.

Nice of you to completely miss my point.

Usually when somebody bitches about "artificial difficulty" it's something that would be bullshit if it worked the way the complainer described it, but it doesn't actually work that way

>> No.2718949

>>2718937
>But I haven't played OP's game so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I doubt anyone here has. People here are too quick to defend everything even without knowing what the issue is about.

Imagine this.

>Play Black Tiger
>Fun albeit shallow game
>One of the easiest arcade games to 1cc
>Very relaxed and comfy game to spend 40 minutes on with 1 quarter

>Play Black Dragon
>Expect the same thing as Black Tiger
>Same game for the most part, except now there are about 3x as many falling rock traps placed in spots with other distractions (enemies, ledges, etc) that are meant to kill you

Basically, Capcom realized that Black Tiger was too damn easy, so when it came time for the Japanese release (Black Dragon came out after Tiger), they took the easiest route possible of adding difficulty to the game.

Because his point was irrelevant. Even with the sound effect, the rocks will hit you the first few times you play through the game. Let's take a new player who starts with Black Dragon (not Black Tiger), he'll make it to a certain point in the game where a hidden trap kills him. He dies to it 2-3 times for him to get it into his muscle memory to avoid that trap in the future. Except, the problem is that he has to go through the same process again and again for other hidden traps deeper into the game.

Arbitrary traps are not good game design. That's my point.

I think the assumption was planted into me by Super Mario Bros 2. They were right to not release that here because it was too long and demanding to not have a save feature (which the disk system original did have).

A few off the top of my head:

Ecco the Dolphin: Japanese version had save points throughout the levels. US version removed them.

Contra Hard Corps: Japanese version had a health bar. US version removed them.

Haunted Castle (Castlevania Arcade): US version has enemies doing 2-3x more damage, making it a great deal more difficult.

These were all done in the name of money, the home games for rentals and the arcades for quarters.
