Previous thread - >>2672482

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright!
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

You're really asking the wrong group of people

Will an LCD technically display your game? Yes. If you don't mind the input lag and shit blacks and upscaling and so on. Will it be as good as a CRT? No.

Hell why are you even asking this, you know the answer. Yes, you can play Duke Nukem and Doom on an LCD if you want and maybe even have a good time but it's an inferior display.

Is it a PAL N64? If it's really washed out and too bright, the extra 75ohm termination might have come off the composite video line (inside the console-end plug/backshell)

Google etim's RGB board as well. You can get RGB out of any N64 with one of those. Too fiddly for a beginner to solder though, and you have to figure out which RGB cable you're using.

Otherwise, S-Video, remembering that a PAL N64 needs a special S-Video cable. And that PAL N64 S-Video can be fiddly to use on a PVM. (I've had problems, at least. Can anyone confirm this?)

That all depends on how decent your phone's camera is, but that's exactly what I've used: My mother's Kodak M863 that she probably took a total of 30 photos with max, then a used one that I got for <$15 after her's broke. It gave me a hell of a lot of photos though. 12000 or so before it went.
I've been wanting a new one for a while now, but the big thing that's pushed me is the replacement I bought was acting up and refusing to focus properly for a while.

Well there are some capture cards that do handle RGB input over regular old phono connectors, as long as sync's on green. I would use a cheap Extron interface to do it instead though, since that would probably handle resolution switching on the fly better than the capture card ever will.

Well I'm pretty sure they use the same phosphors and have the same line count, but does that mean the picture quality will be the same? Could there be differences simply between two models of tube even if they are spec'd the same?

Shame it'd be virtually impossible to amass a collection of sony PVMs for side by side comparison, since the differences in wear/setup would likely offset the differences in PQ.

>> No.2710796

>>2710768
I'm collecting monitors right now to do that. Currently have:

1x BVM 20F1U
2x PVM 20L5
1x PVM 14M4
2x PVM 5041Q

Working on getting some 8s, 9s and 14s.

Anyhow, if two monitors have the same line count and phosphors the main difference will be inputs, build quality/depth or availability of on-screen menus and what addons/accessories Sony developed for each set.

I know my BVM has an probe port for auto setup, so a while ago I grabbed a NIB probe off eBay for $15. Haven't got the chance to use it yet.

Would you say there are any major PQ differences between the M4>L5>F1 for 15k inputs? I've read the F1 is crazy sharp, almost like using a PC CRT. I -think- they all use the same or very similar phosphors, so the main differences should be sharpness?

I'd deff swap out one of the L5s for a 600 line set.

I got the BVM last week but planned for it for over a year lel. Haven't got the chance to test it yet. It was used at Harpo Studios in Chicago to edit Oprah shows before she shut down and moved to California. I expect it'll be stupid sharp, judging by the photos I've seen from others. I have a decent SLR camera and macro lens, so whenever the set does get turned on, I'll deliver some softcore phosphor porn.

Does anyone have a list of the different Sony PVM model numbers and which are the best worst? Have some money to finally pull the trigger on buying one...

>> No.2711040

>>2710949
This is how the Sony naming scheme works.

Production/Professional Video Monitor (PVM)
Broadcast Video Monitor (BVM)

Size in inches diagonal (5, 8, 9, 14, 20, 24, 32).

Quality/features level (L#, F#, etc.). This is where things sometimes get murky, because Sony didn't always follow a perfect pattern.

The last letter on a model is often omitted because it doesn't matter much. E for Europe, U for States denoting the area the monitor was originally meant to ship to. Doesn't matter much because it only really changes some default on screen language settings.

Please correct me on this if I'm mistaken. I'm writing this from memory at work and I'm 90% sure that there's an official document out there that is more accurate.

>> No.2711059

This is pretty much all correct. The older models, I think sometime around the early/mid 90s, used a four digit system. The first two numbers were the screen size, i.e. 1953, 2030, 8053. It gets a bit weird because I believe the 19/20 models and 13/14 models would basically have the same screen size. Actually I'm not sure if they ever used 13.... Anyway, the smaller sets had the size as the first digit, so 50 and 80 were 5" and 8". The second two models were used for quality and features, for PVM I believe 53 was usually the higher end 600 line sets. BVMs and sub 13" sets used different number sets.

Finally, MD was added at the end for medical units. I'm still not sure if they had any more shielding or anything otherwise different from the studio sets aside from color and splash guards.

Here's the important ones I remember.

xx53 (13/14??/19)
>600 line PVM, RGB inputs, I believe these could be set to YPbPr like the later M2 models?
xxM2 (14/20)
>600 line PVM, RGB, yPbPr capable. Introduced mid 90s?
xxL2 (14/20)
>600 line PVM, RGB, YPbPr options. Very similar to the M2 models but with newer menus and no aperture knob. I don't ever find myself wanting to tweak that knob anyway. These were introduced early 00s if memory serves, and I think were the last new CRT PVM model introduced.

xxM4 (14/20)
>800 line PVM, RGB, YPbPr option. Higher line count tube version of the M2, but still 15khz input only. This is the same line count as most BVMs.
xxL5 (14/20)
>800 line PVM, RGB, YPbPr option. multi scan tube with 480p/720p support. I believe the tube goes up to 1080i, I'm not sure exactly how it handles scaling but this is basically the highest end PVM you can get. It's pretty much a BVM with some built in components instead of being based entirely on add on cards. They are also sought after, and the holofag is selling one if you want to visit the shithole that is florida.

>600 line, composite+svid input only. These I believe used the same or a very similar tube to the L2, but had greatly reduced controls and no RGB input. Introduced around the same time as the L2.

xxN6 (14/20)
>500 line, RGB input but no YPbPr? Also very reduced controls like the L1.
xxN5 (14/20)
>500 line, basically a N6 without RGB input.

I'm pretty fuzzy on all of the number models and BVMs, but chances are those are the important ones you'll come across. Some of the letter series have 9" models (i.e. 9L1), but the 9" tubes are usually a much lower line count and should be avoided unless you really want one.

I've got two LGs right now, one is small and pretty damn sharp and flat and the other is bigger which is better if I keep just one. Just can't decide which one looks better.

I will say that both of the former, in those photos, have both the brightness and contrast turned down to compensate for leaving the Megaview's outputs open. Same thing with the OP, except I didn't do as mush as I probably should have with that one.

Still not sure how I'm going to go forward with fixing the 14M2's discoloration issue. Putting a speaker next to it works just like with the Megaview, but is a real bother for a smaller set like that.

They're essentially the same monitor, the Olympus just has a different color case/badging.
Sight unseen, you have to take a bit of a leap on the condition of the monitor, both physically/cosmetically, and in terms of visual quality.
A really beat up looking but unused monitor can technically have a pristine image where an immaculate one could have countless hours on it and be suffering from said wear and age.
If they were both in the same exact condition, I would personally go for the Sony as it's the original branding and I prefer the white face plate of the medical series to the dark grey of the standard series and Olympus models.

I have an OEV203 in the OP, and the little brother of the 20M2MDU, the 14M2MDU next to it; This is the said 20M2MDU.

Are you saying it's in the box or some shit, or it just looks like it hasn't been disassembled or what have you.
If the former and it hasn't been used at all, even $175 is a damn good deal. I doubt that is the case though.

Either way, neither price sound terrible for what stuff is starting to go for these days, but obviously the lower you can get them the better.

You need the Y/C option cards for the BVM's otherwise S-Video won't work. Most would have used RGB, and won't even have the right card. And i *think* s-video might come in different PAL or NTSC formats...? Anyone?

>>2714462
I'm going to assume you have a SCART TV/PVM/BVM/RGB monitor...

To plug a PC into a 15kHz RGB CRT you first need a graphics card with VGA out, or DVI-I and an adapter, and then a cable/way to get the signal into your RGB CRT. Google VGA to BNC, or perhaps VGA-SCART

If Windows - search for crt_emudriver, that's the easiest way. There's an amount of reading involved. And it only works for ATI gfx cards of the 4000HD series and back, thus far.

The guide below will get you start4ed with groovyMAME and crt-emudriver. Keep playing around with the VMMaker.ini file until you get the right modelines, and use ArcadeOSD to change modes. This is all done most easily on a second monitor so you can play around and windows doesn't fuck up.

http://geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/viewtopic.php?id=290

Guide is for Win 7, but there's a link at the bottom for XP.

After that, to plug PC into CRT by other methods you could use, soft 15kHz or CRU or powerstrip, though none of those is much fun.

If Linux - win. Just alter the modelines. Of course, you have to know how to use Linux.

If you can't handle any of this, or don't want to, there are graphics cards that will output S-Video, though it looks like shit for the most part. Or you could try a VGA-component converter, i think?

It does look pretty nice. Without seeing it turned on and displaying something, you really can't tell how much wear it's possibly seen.

>apparently it was used for endoscopy

Chroma needs to be encoded into something, so yes; It's only once you get to pure color transmission that you can do away with color encoding and the like.

You mean what they can look like, or what they can do to a monitor as in like damage or whatever?

Also, what card did you get? I've had an X600 laying around that I plan to use at some point.

4350. I've got a 2400XT right now and I'm pretty sure it's the source of various issues I've had.

Yeah, in terms of if/how they can damage the monitor. I've heard people talk about that vaguely but never read into it much. I've gotten some funky outputs from my PC on various occasions and the flyback makes some rather unhappy noises.

It's really the luck of the draw with eBay (or finding the few good sellers). Now that I have a little expendable income, I prefer to order from Markertek or B&H or other broadcast outlets.

Funny thing about Markertek: they're the only place I can find that sells windscreens for my Shure VP47AL mic. Shure's distribution system sucks ass.

Bro I hate to break this to you, but a 20F1s may not fit where you want it to go. Not only is it large in width and height, it is very, very long by CRT standards. Also it is very heavy. I'll post a side pic later this morning.

>>2714386
No, PVMs did not track hours on or hours in use. The best way to compare two identical PVMs is to color balance them and compare their output at maximum and minimum brightness and contrast. After that you'll probably want to get up close and see which has better convergence by default and test all inputs for issues.

One more thing to look at would be red bloom on the NTSC color pattern or on a full-red test. Red is often the first color to show issues when a tube needs to be revitalized. I don't recommend revitalization ever really except in the most extreme circumstances. Once you start, it often becomes a bad habit.

Bad sync will only "hurt" a monitor if you leave it in that state for an extended period of time. Bad sync is very obvious, normally seen as a very quickly vertically or (less often) horizontally scrolling image with incorrect colors.

I haven't bothered going the graphics card route with adapting PC output to TV monitors. Instead I've purchased specialized boardroom/classroom presentation equipment (Crestron/Extron). I haven't done my own testing but I believe the RGB interfaces have very little processing time. The me are very affordable and have one VGA in cable or input, one VGA out for a normal monitor and one set of BNC connections for RGB out to your monitor.

Uhhhh yeah lol have you read the thread?

Here's a picture of one module >>2711915

BVMs and some other types of monitors are modular. For example, our PVMs are built to only have so many inputs. Both of mine do Composite, S-Video, Component, and RGB but some don't. A BVM might only have a card in it capable of doing RGB for example, if its application only required that.

The 15kHz they were talking about was the horizontal sync frequency of SD sets, and the PVM-1380 is an SD set.

I will say he knows his stuff and it is likely great condition and he does repair and maintenance of the stuff himself. If and when you get to his place it is a broadcast media wonderland. He'll let you test anything you want right there on the spot.

He is selling these hard to find items for a premium because they are hard to find, but he is also keeping and maintaining them for optimum condition.

You likely aren't gonna get a great deal, and I doubt he is super flexible on price because he knows what hes got. But you are likely going to get a really good monitor handled well and with care.

I'm somewhat confident about the line count, but it's based on retailer/medical website info instead of a sales brochure. The manual/front of the set says it has a 'super fine pitch' tube/resolution. Also comes in medical flavours.

The same techniques were used with RGB-only systems, and are still effective even without the patterns being completely wiped-out by noise.
It's okay if you like it like that, but just don't say it's the proper way to display these effects.

Some games are colorful and contrasted enough that even with dithering made for composite, the clarity gain is worth is. Both Earthworm Jim games are good exemples.
Eternal Champions get a bit too grainy with higher quality connection.

The most extreme exemple is Vectorman. This game was so carefully crafted for composite display, it loses almost all it's luster when all the blending tricks are exposed.

Does anyone have any tips for properly setting up the image brightness / contrast etc? My CRT is only a cheap model with a few issues but I always feel paranoid that I'm going to kill it if I make the image too sharp and vibrant.

It's already worrying me that brighter lines appear to bulge outwards compared to darker lines. Is this a sign that it's failing or just bad construction?

>> No.2717330

>>2717192

I'll expand on this by adding that "no native resolution" means that the source content isn't being upscaled (digitally at least), which makes it look like absolute ass. Stuff like dithering also never works on LCDs (see: >>2716986 ).

Honestly the best thing you can do is go find someone with a SD FD trinitron or buy one for ~$10 on craigslist and see for yourself. Unless the set is majorly out of whack, it's immediately obvious what the differences are for 240p content, and even 480i stuff looks a lot better.

>> No.2717351

>>2717328
>Does anyone have any tips for properly setting up the image brightness / contrast etc?
Use a SMPTE pattern.
First lower the brightness.
Set the contrast to around 40-50% or better at the point where the colors appear nice and vivid to you. If you not use RGB then you only take the white as reference and then set the saturation at the lowest point where the red bar only lights up red phosphors, usually I tend to set the white point to 'brighter than a piece of white paper' for gaming/watching purposes.
Then set the brightness in the way that only the right part of the 3 black blocks under the red bar stands out a little bit, the other 2 black blocks must be black. Readjust the contrast if needed.

>but I always feel paranoid that I'm going to kill it if I make the image too sharp and vibrant.
Only if you use it too long.

>It's already worrying me that brighter lines appear to bulge outwards compared to darker lines. Is this a sign that it's failing or just bad construction?
The high voltage generators can't keep up with the beam current. If it happens with on a proper calibrated screen then it's rather a sign of bad engineering or maybe a worn out tube but I'm not sure on that one.

The gscartw (another retro "av" project) was COMPLETE last year, and outside of extremely limited run of pre-orders, nobody has them and they arent available for sale to the general public yet.

I'd feel comfortable saying if you are lucky, you'll get GC component cables in 2 years minimum. You are better off just either biting the bullet right now, or saving up little by little and buying in a year so so.

Is it cool, yes. Would it be wonderful for retro gamers, absolutely. It just is highly unlikely to be mass produced and able to be bought from an organized retail outlet, or even by a reliable seller on ebay.

If you can do the work yourselves according to the layout available, I'm sure you could go through the headache of doing it yourself or having someone specially make a one off for you. If you want to check it, the best thing to bring is a wii with 240p test suite. Two biggest issues I've had with FDs are geometry and convergence. Scroll tests work pretty well for the former and it has some good patterns for the latter as well. Naturally check the colors while you are there, but that should be pretty obvious.

First off, there are already many sites that describe how to calibrate a CRT. Most aim at professional sets but most stuff applies to consumer sets too.

I think this is probably the nicest guide I've seen:
http://www.videouniversity.com/articles/color-bars-and-how-to-use-em/

FFmpeg generates good color bars, here;s some done by it.
Remember that you cannot accurately represent the NTSC color bars (particularly PLUGE) in RGB color space, so you'll want to calibrate over S-video, YPbPr, or composite. But burning this picture to a DVD should work. Many color bar images if you do a google search are oversaturated or otherwise wrong in order to appear better on RGB systems like PC's.

some pointers on calibration that I can think of quickly:

Remember to make sure your set is set to a 7.5 IRE black level if yours offers that setting (usually only in ones with an OSD). Set it up for 7.5 IRE, and then when playing on a japanese game console, you will need to change it to 0 IRE, brightening the image.

On analog sets without an OSD you will have to tweak the brightness dial up so you can see differences between all three PLUGE bars and only the darkest actually looks black.

If you want to know why this is, look up NTSC-J.

Okay, it's 4 AM here. Good night, I'll try to answer questions tomorrow if I wake up and the thread isn't dead.

>> No.2718204

>>2718203
p.s.
note that the 7.5 IRE thing means that the other calibration advice was definitely right for american NTSC systems, but not for japanese ones like my famicom which output a darker signal intended for a black level of 0 IRE.

Sorry, one more thing. I noticed I made a mistake in claiming that those color bars would work fine.

You see, to make a color PNG ffmpeg has to convert the YUV color space to RGB. So that picture is WRONG.

You will want to run:
'ffmpeg -f lavfi -i "smptebars=duration=5:size=720x480:rate=30"-target ntsc-dvd output.mpg'
(or for pal, '-target pal-dvd')
where duration is time in seconds (in this case 5 seconds), size is the resolution (for a DVD it's 720x480, NOT 640x480), rate is the framerate (usually 30), and 'output.mpg' is the output.
-target=ntsc-dvd sets the color space to yuv420p, which is what we want. It also makes the mpeg file able to act as a .TS file, which is more convenient for burning and doesn't need re-encoding. This preserves the correct color space.

Got a dumb question about scanlines. Given that CRTs output an image in terms of odd and even scanline fields when interlaced, which of the two actually "comes first"? Like, if I were to make a game output in 240p at first, then switch to 480i suddenly, which of the fields will be the first to be output?

And for that matter, when a game outputs in 240p, is it the odd or even fields that are displayed in the picture?

Neither odd nor even has to come first. Each field has some extra sync pulses that let the TV know whether the field is odd or even. It depends on whatever the hardware outputting the signal wants.

Looking at the output from my NES and N64 (running Pokemon Stadium, which switches between 240p for 3d and 480i for 2d), when consoles are outputting 240p they just don't have any of those pre-equalization or post-equalization pulses. I'm guessing that the 240p fields are taken as "odd" from the perspective of the TV.

There are cheap PC monitors and cheap TVs, as well as professional PC monitors and professional TVs.

In my experience I'd say PC monitors generally have better geometry and convergence as long as they are in good condition. But, they'll never be as good as a 15hz monitor for low res content IMO.

Computer CRTs have much smaller phosphors to be able to display the higher PC resolutions.
Because of this, the electron beam is also much narrower.
these 2 difference make bleeding/blooming much less present, which is the reason why simulating scanlines still doesn't looks like a regular tv

Also, phosphors are less persistant, which can induce flicker at 60hz.

That's horizontal scan, not vertical.

We need a disclaimer about that. In these threads the terms 15, 24, and 31hz are referencing horizontal scan and not vertical. In fact we basically never talk about vertical refresh, everything here is 50-60hz vertical.

(multiply 15hz by 1000 and you are correct).
That is well outside standard deviation. They are wrong.

BTW, for anyone wondering, 31khz is the horizontal rate of progressive scan 480 lines (480p), because the gun and deflection magnets have to move twice as fast to cram twice as many lines into every frame drawn, when compared to 480i/240p.

A lot of people seem to by typing 15Hz instead of thinking about what that number actually means and realizing it must be on the order of thousands of cycles per second instead of just a handful, but no one seems to mistakenly believe that 15kHz has anything to do with the vertical refresh frequency.

there are rare (or less common at least) top loaders that do have AV output. But all the ones I've seen in person are RF only.

Apparently there is also a revision of top loader with better RF output (jailbar reduction). I've not seen this either, but I have been told by people in the nesdev community that they do in fact exist as well.

You can mod the top loader for composite out, same as the original famicom (which is also RF only). I've done it to both.

N8 is the only cart still being updated. AFAIK Kevtris is still working on NESHDMI, which does provide all expansion audio, IF you have the game or a flashcart ; it isn't a flashcart by itself.

Well as someone who hangs around on NESdev's IRC, I can tell you that kevtris is making a flash cart that uses the code from his FPGA NES project (a personal project of his) to replicate the mappers. And the HDMI board is called 'HDMINES'.

Yeah, that's mainly due to the size of the monitor. I originally didn't plan on doing a full playthrough and had just planned on a few minutes of video to test how it captured the 14M2MDU.

If I do another (I will) I'll very likely use either of the 20'' PVMs or possibly the Megaview, which has already shown itself to work quite nicely with this camera http://scan-lined.tumblr.com/post/130396333710

Easy mode that will impress you slightly is to get something like this(You can find this or similar products on ebay for around $35-40: http://www.monoprice.com/product?c_id=101&cp_id=10114&cs_id=1011407&p_id=7113&seq=1&format=2

Hook up your original Xbox into it by way of Component and you should get a pretty nice picture.

You could do the same with your PS2 but Xbox by way of component is more impressive.

You cant get any better on your NES unless you mod it. Gamecube component cables are way too expensive.

If you ever get your controllers for your Genesis you could take the same thing that I recommended above and add a Component to Scart adapter, a scart cable for your Genesis, and a set of generic component cables you can plug your Genesis by way of VGA as well.

For your reference (depending on if you have a Genesis version 1 or version 2) you would need everything for sale in this auction: http://www.ebay.com/itm/SEGA-Genesis-Model-2-Scart-Cable-RGB-YPbPr-YUV-Component-Video-Converter-Setup-/221895550579?hash=item33aa016673

RCA audio out leading from my CRT to my receiver for my powered speaker system. As stated above, there is a clear issue present just based on the decibels required from the receiver to get audio from other devices. I'm not asking about the consoles, I'm asking about the likelihood of a CRT's RCA audio out to a stereo receiver needing a preamp of some sort.

If you can't be bothered to read and have nothing to contribute to a discussion you may as well keep your hostilities to yourself.

>>2723383
I will try and clarify here:

My RGB modded NES and my PS1 are outputting RCA audio to my HD-CRT which is outputting RCA audio to my stereo receiver which is powering two particularly large floor-standing speakers. The CRT itself has its internal mute activated.

Other devices hooked directly into my receiver play loud and clear at -40db and -25db is too loud to bear, however when playing anything on my CRT (whether audio is produced via RCA or HDMI) I have to crank it all the way up to -15db just to hear it and up to 0db for a decent volume, but I am quite frightened that doing this could potentially damage my particularly expensive soundsystem.

>> No.2723676

So the CRT has an audio out that pipes anything being fed to it to your receiver.

Is it possible that the audio out has a both a fixed and variable setting, meaning that the CRT's volume setting affects what's being sent out? I'm nearly positive my Hi-Scan Sony has a setting like that; In this case, fixed would be more appropriate, since you want to have the receiver do all of the processing rather than the TV.

>> No.2723690

>>2723516
No. When the smudge showed I had a Saturn, a PS3 and a Wii hooked up. I was using a cheap, metallic extension, though. I do have a closet filled with crap right next to the CRT, maybe there's a magnet in there.

It's almost gone after 4 power cycles 1 hour apart from each other, but the corner is still a different hue than the rest of the screen.

Is there a way to tell for sure whether it's a capacitor or magnetic interference? What's the likelihood of this happening again?

My old Panasonic camcorder NV-GS60EG does 576i50, with YADIF it's possible to get decent 50fps and CRTs running at 50hz don't flicker neither do they have banding.
DV is also a space 'waster' as it stores each FIELD (not frame) as some sort of JPG while other codecs like MPEG or DivX just stores major differences between the frames.
The major downside is that i have to deal with IEEE1394 to transfer miniDV tapes without loss.
It's possible to record with my PC directly without using tapes but the problem is that disconnecting during transfer crashes the PC and the cable i have is quite shitty.

Here's what it looks like, this is notepad showing the letters "aaA" on a 14" Trinitron TV via VGASCART with 50hz interlaced.
On the left is the weaved frame, on the right are the 2 frames that YADIF produces from that one frame.
This was just a test for the IEEE1394 card i gotten recently and I was holding the camera freehand.

I only have S-Video cables for my NES... I figure if I'm buying something anyway I may as well buy something that provides maximum compatibilities

Whatever you think you're doing, you're doing it wrong.

It's modded with the Nintendo AV MultiOut. Also it's a top loader, wouldn't have had RCA connectors anyway.

>>2724627
Unless it's also had an RGB mod done to it, you're still not going to get anything other than composite out of a NES.

I hope you mean with the NESRGB

>> No.2724636

It has the RGB mod, stereo-audio, the full suite.

I've tested other S-Video cables via passive converters onto the unit in question (N64, PS1, a VCR) and they all suffer visually, whereas pure composite video looks fantastic (which is quite strange to say).

>> No.2724638

My CRT is making this low-pitched hissing sound. It's in the back behind the screen and hardly noticeable unless the room is silent.

Is this normal or is it dying? Should I be worried about, replace any parts?

Just to be clear, there's nothing wrong with the NES, it looks beautiful on other CRTs, it's most like the BNC inputs on the PVM-1380 taking issue with passive-converted S-Video (or so I would think)

>> No.2724645

>>2724640
if you're mod is properly done, you have every signal available at AV out.

If you want composite, just get a $2 nintendo composite cable.

>> No.2724651

maybe dumb question

are there preferred settings for the bias/gain when using rgb (this is a sony pvm 14M4U w/ rgb input from snes)? right now i have them at defaults aka what they were when i bought it. i am also using D93 setting, D65 and setting it to USER gives a 'warmer' looking picture that i'm sure isn't ideal

>> No.2724652

>>2724645
As above, if I'm going to have to purchase something online anyways I'd like to buy something that can maximize compatibility with my PVM; a nintendo cable would work fine for my Nintendo consoles, but not my Segas or Sonys.

Just wondering if $200 is the norm for an active S-Video to Composite converter, I can't seem to find any others

Also wondering if there might be a rationale of why S-Video to composite doesn't seem to work via. passive conversions

>> No.2724658

>>2724652
As an addendum to that, something particularly ideal/versatile for my usages appears to be $500:
http://www.hdtvsupply.com/aa-1361.html

Which is why I'm asking around to see if anyone knows much about these types of converters

>> No.2724672

>>2724652
because composite transmits color during blanking, while chroma transmits it during the whole line. And you need delay line, bandpass filter...
If you don't want to disconnect cables, buy a switcher

Would I need a cable with a sync stripper, or not?

D65 is actually the NTSC broadcast standard white point; It just seems D93(Japans's white point) looks better for a decent number of older games for whatever reason.

>>2724708
A PC Monitor is only going to accept 31khz+ sync in just about every case, which would mean VGA. VGA is RGBHV.
No, you wouldn't need a sync stripper for it, but you also wouldn't be able to use it with older systems. Would probably look lovely with the Dreamcast though.

I remember hooking up my Dreamcast to my old Sony W900. Also emulated some PS1 games in 480p on it. Was glorious.

Lowered bit rate more this time; Raise it some, or is it decent as is?

I'm a tad bit jelly. This A240 has a decent picture, but is considerably smaller than that and obviously doesn't support as high of resolutions.

anon who scored the 14L5 for "parts" here.
just got to my friends house to check it out. had it shipped there because if anyone in my family saw another TV come in through the mail I'd have my ass kicked.

I'm not looking how weak the packaging looks though.

Pepper your angus, it's probably gonna get pretty raw when you open that box.

Side note: picked up a BVM 14G5 for $60. Supposedly has under 100 hours but I haven't checked to see if that's true yet.

I had a feeling it would happen but I was also hoping it would look like this,
this is how my first 14L5 was packed for $25.
there was also another big foam pad on top.

came from only 6 hours away from burbank

seems to be the case for the few games i've been testing with my snes so far, thanks for the answer. didn't know those things about D65/93

I really want an AV cart to make moving heavy monitors around easier. Settling for a rack with wheels.

>> No.2725781

My monitor starts ringing if I leave it on. I don't notice this while playing games...Just when I forget to turn the monitor off...So I don't know if it only does it when it's left on without a console running on it or what. Why is this? It was recently calibrated and stuff when I got it, so I don't think that there's anything wrong with it.

Also, there are two settings I'm not sure about...Comp level which is set to BETA7.5 and NTSC setup which is set to 7.5. These affect the color. What should they be set to?
