Remember to never use savestates unless you save data back to your cartridges frequently. I managed to lose my save data at the end of Zelda II because I managed to load an early savestate test. Since I hadn't used save states since the first hour of the game, I had no saves to load, so even though I saved after nearly every game over, I had no way of recovering them.

Down + start opens the Retron 5 menu btw

I really like it so far. I've never had any issues with it and the only thing I wish they would change is making the menu more optional. Like if you put in a cartridge and turn on the console you obviously just want to play the game right away and having to wait in the menu and press play when it's loaded kinda kills the illusion of playing on a retro system. If the Retron 5 had just displayed the console's logo or something while the game loads it would be much better imo.

It's a cool shop, but I had to sigh at that. I don't know why they don't get a CRT; they sell non-retro stuff but everything around the TV is retro, and they only ever demo the old stuff anyways. For that matter, I don't know why they don't use original hardware; they stock everything from Ataris to Super Famicoms, a G2 Genesis was sitting right next to the Retron.

This is exactly why I don't understand people who buy Retrons at all. The actual consoles are not where the bulk of a lot of collections are, it's the stacks and stacks of games.

If you're into the "I must only play original carts on hardware on a CRT" scene, then it makes little sense to me since it's basically an emulator. If you're not into it, it makes no sense because why would you not just emulate at that point?

But then I think people who still want to look at the hideous glare of a CRT in 2015 are crazy and they all think I'm crazy for finding them ugly. This world takes all sorts I guess.

The people who like them are too poor for a downscaler or too stupid to figure emulation out. They scream "muh original experience". When most of these games play just as well on newer hardware. They need to justify the $1,000+ investment in trash they have piled in their living room. Their investment is going to lose it's value faster than baseball cards in the 90's in about 10 - 15 years once the generation that buys them has moved on to other interests and shit. This might be true for some, but I went from being an emulationfag to full-on original hardware CRT user.
I buy games to play them and enjoy the experience of playing them on their hardware, not for any silly speculation market value crap.
I can load a .nes file on any number of devices in my house, but that feels hollow compared to pulling a cart out of its sheath, opening the flap door of the NES, pushing the cart in until you feel the hold of the pins and pushing it down with a click into the console. It's purely sentimental, but it's an aspect of the hobby that appeals to me.

At some point you're just trying to drive a tack with a sledge hammer when it comes to 15-30 year old games. I'll wait like 2 years before I uprgrade my Pi2 when these little card sized project boards are doing PS2 or better. For $35 it has no serious competition atm. Are there faster project boards? Yes. Myself and another player are currently playing the home alone series on our RetroN V, they are gems of retro games.

Mike Matei has a RetroN V and adores it.
