I never had a PC Engine. I never even saw one. It's time to correct this mistake. What are some good PC Engine/ PC Engine CD games to emulate? Also any good japanese-only gems for it?

Picture unrelated but cute

As mentioned super star soldier and ys, too.
Ninja spirit... The tg16 version is less expensive than the pce version, for some reason (saigo no nindou).
Shibubinman...spellings?
I really love the artwork on the hucards....

The only mistake is you thinking your life will be enriched by an old game system that you never played, and then going so far as to ask for Japanese titles because you've been duped into thinking Asian creations are superior, which shows itself in your usage of anime to start the thread.

You could just emulate a NES or SNES game, but no, that would be for Baka Kaijus who don't appreciate that the katana is really the best weapon, but only when used in the right hands of course.

an entire old system with a whole catalogue of games that might or might not be fun to me? i'm surely thinking my life will be enriched if i like at least 10 or 20, yes.

>and then going so far as to ask for Japanese titles because you've been duped into thinking Asian creations are superior
nope i'm asking for japanese-only stuff because the PC Engine was mainly a japanese console with moderate success in the US only and most games were butchered by censorship when they crossed the ocean. if you like playing heavily downgraded versions of games sure, but i don't

Then maybe you should pick one of the millions of unplayed games released in America that you never got around to because you were too busy looking for Japanese things because you were tricked into thinking they're better by mid 2000s internet. I bet you complain about Naruto in real life.

Japan. No seriously, go because it's a fun vacation, and leave lots of room in your briefcase for old electronics.

I grabbed my PC Engine (white, RF only) from a little junk store in Osaka for Y1500, the PC Engine/Core Grafx/Core Grafx II are all really simple, reliable systems, and the White ones are pretty cheap as long as you're not in Tokyo. If you want to just play Hu Cards, that's a great way to go, the expansion port on the back even has pins for composite and RGB+Sync so you don't have to open the system to get excellent video out of it.

If you must buy from a re-seller, buy an untested one from a Japanese eBayer. The PC Engine itself is reliable. Expect to pay $50+ without a controller or power supply.

One you get into wanting to play PC Engine CD / Super CD games it's going to get expensive unless you buy untested stuff and know how to fix it. The CD ROM drives are notoriously unreliable, the gears strip, the laser pickups die, the worm gear siezes, and capacitors leak. The chances of finding a working drive that hasn't been rebuilt are nill. Plus all the fucking components you need to get it working.

Also pic related, it's my franken engine.

Valkyrie Densetsu / Legend of Valkyrie is so good, super comfy game. I'm very sad it never made it to the U.S. in any form back in the day, I would've loved it.

In general, Namco was on fire on the PC Engine, the Genpei Touma-den games are one-of-a-kind, Galaga 88/90 is really good, Ordyne is a really great cute-em-up.

If you want a different version I'd say play the SNES Princess Maker. It's a different game but the mechanics and events are practically PM2.

>> No.2709310

The PC Engine is more like a Super NES than the SNES. It uses the same basic architecture with more memory for bigger more colorful graphics and bigger games in general and that's exactly how it plays - line NES games expanded to 90s scale. This is probably exactly what a certain type of gamer wants.

If you're that type of gamer you should also hit up the MSX.

PC Engines are really cheap, if you just wanna play HuCards.

If you want to play CD and Super CD games, your best bet is to buck up for a professionally rebuilt Duo from someone who specializes in maintaining these systems. It isn't going to be cheap.

If you're comfortable replacing capacitors, and working with small mechanical components, you could go down the rabbit hole of buying 'junk' parts and fixing them. Also remember you can mix and match some TG16 parts.

The optical drives are identical aside from color and lid shape, just make sure you have the correct interface unit for your system (TG16 won't fit in the Japanese Interface Unit, and vise versa).

Controllers use the same boards, but different cable (JP = Mini DIN, US = DIN), easy to make converters, or rewire.

A Duo R or Duo RX isn't really going to have any issues. I don't even think the RX is different other than the weird controller.

It's the normal Duos that have capacitor issues.

>> No.2710218

>>2709836

R and RX are the same, slightly different color plastic and RX has a fuckawful controller.

But yeah they're both the best built machines. A Duo is cheaper though, and once it's re-capped, it should be just as reliable (same Hitachi drive unit as the later versions)

My fave is still the briefcase though, I know the drives are terrible, but it is just so cool looking.
