Silent Hill is better.

But I'm playing through RE1 the first time, and its still a really great game. Silent Hill's gameplay isn't nearly as balanced or well directed, and it feels a little overstretched. RE tends to have much more thought put into each encounter and the layout of the mansion, making for an incredibly tense and tactical game focused on resources. I'm surprised by how well it holds up, and it makes me really excited to play the rest of the series up to REmake.

Silent Hill on the other hand, is atmospheric horror through and through. The game works with everything it has and completely draws you into a dark and surreal world. It is a game about being enveloped deeper and deeper into an abyssal town, and lives through its dreamlike ambiguity.

Obviously, they are completely different games and comparing them is silly, but I like both of those games and wanted to comment on each of them.

I always liked SH better. I never could get into RE because the static camera angles pissed me off. The farthest I ever got was the snake boss in the mansion and I said fuck it. Survival horror has never been my forte, though.

Silent Hill is infinitely better at horror, script, story and even gameplay.

But I grew up playing Resident Evil.

Both series have a large place in my heart and I appreciate them both, for different reasons, equally.

>> No.2701020

Like series-wise or game wise? Silent Hill came out the same year as Resident Evil 3, that isn't really a fair comparison

Eh, I prefer the mechanics of RE, especially 3, probably the best in the series

If you took the gameplay of RE1 and made it a "realistic" mecha game, the garbage tank controls would be called "immersive".

2/3 is a tie for me.

I still don't know why they're not just making the RE2 Remake a joint remake of Resident evil 2 & 3 considering it'd be almost too fucking easy.

Both games are very similar in the way they works; yet both are also very different in every aspect.

RE1 has better gameplay; Silent Hill's lack of limited inventory quickly kills a good part of the survival gameplay. Also, Silent Hill's gameplay is a LOT more boring. Corridors and rooms are much bigger and most of the times you have bigger field of view too, meaning you can just easily spam enemies from a distance. Being able to walk and aim at the same time also helps making you safe. Overall Silent Hill 1's gunplay and overall action is very, very weak. You'll rarely ever feel cornered, you'll rarely ever feel like you're on the edge of your supplies, etc The only plus sides of SH1's action gameplay is how enemies respawn on the outdoor parts.

However Silent Hill has some nice puzzles like the piano one. I mean, RE1's puzzles are great oo, but some of Silent Hill 1's are a bit smarter.

Atmosphere is great in both, each in its own way. RE1 is more about claustrophobia and the direct fear of dying, while SH1 is more about gross, weird and disgusting things.
I don't believe SH1 is any more 'psychological' horror than RE1 is. The SH games all have their share of "cheapscares" too, like the cat in the locker in SH1 and when Homecoming has a couple of cheapscares too, everyone says they "didn't respect the Silent Hill horror"; but that's another subject

RE1 wins for me. Gameplay is overall much better and isn't just an excuse to experience a weird atmosphere. I've played both games to death, speedran them, did some no-save no dying runs, some "shit equipment only" runs, etc and the skill gap is much higher in RE1.

One may like the kind of atmosphere SH1 does more, but that alone won't save the weak survival action.

Silent Hill. It's one of my favourite vidya franchises, whilst Resident Evil is really low on my scale.

Resident Evil was better

the ps1 hardware sucked too bad to realize what silent hill was supposed to be. Silent hill 2 was great though.

Silent Hill, no contest. The old RE games are overrated as fuck and really don't hold up well past the era they were released in. Neither does SH1 for that matter but at least it makes up for it in horror and story.

That being said I'd take RE4 over the whole SH franchise, but since that's not retro I can't talk about that here.

Both games are completely different, they play differently, the atmosphere is different, etc

Besides the REmake is better appreciated once you've played the original; and one may play the original just to see what the fuss was all about; so there is still PLENTY of reasons to play it.

Silent Hill is far better at creating an atmosphere of horror and dread. Resident Evil was influential and all, but the remake is far better and I personally find the inventory management shit to be a pain.

neither

as long Dino Crisis exists

never understood the RE hype. its just a shitty game with clunky controls, horrendus voiceacting ("lol but its funneh its so trashy" doesnt count), boring level design, shitty gameplay and not scary at all.

and silent hill is not comparable with RE beacause it is too different

Yes, and Casltevania IV means there's no reason to play Casltevania 1 or any other game that stars Simon.

They're two different games, dingus. Both worth playing, and one of which shouldn't even be discussed here.

How are Dino Crisis controls any less "clunky" than RE's ? I mean, I don't have a problem with either controls, but there isn't much difference.

I do agree that Dino Crisis is better than RE1 and SH1 though, at least as far as gameplay is concerned. Atmosphere wise it's not as good sadly, if it were, it'd be the best survival horror ever.
