GOG now has System Shock 1 legally! Anyone know if it's worth getting if I already have Portable?

System Shock: Enhanced Edition features:
- Higher resolution support: up to 1024x768, and 854x480 widescreen mode.
- Mouselook support added.
- Remappable keys with three profiles to choose from: original controls, custom controls, and lefthanded controls.
- Some original game bugs fixed.
Rocket through cyberspace to steal information, hack security and grapple with watchdog defense programs enslaved to a maniacal computer.
Survive battle after battle against armies of killer cyborgs and deadly robots as you collect hardware attachments, life-sustaining patches and deadly weapons to combat mindless mutants.
Test your intelligence by solving puzzles, rewiring access panels and outwitting SHODAN in its own cyber-realm.
Enjoy the vastly improved controls and graphics of the Enhanced Edition - or keep your experience as close to the original as possible with the Classic version.

The GOG release is just a relabeled Portable. No point in buying if you've already got it.

>> No.2695580

BTW portable was taken down last month due to this deal, so either you have to track down the last portable release or just find a DL of the GOG installer

Personally, I prefer Shlink to Portable, but then my battlestation is pretty underpowered.

It definitely isn't just SSP, try it before you bitch about it

I only played I couple minutes but I have way better performance at higher resolutions than with SSP.

I'm quite curious of how they solved the music problem. SS1's music is in John Miles' Miles Sound System XMI (Extended MIDI) format and it's probably the only game using its more advanced features.

>> No.2695872

>>2695553
Actually no. SSP is more configurable and the copyright holders kicked out that version for their own. It's kind of stupid, but apparently the letter told them that they could make SSP a patch for the legal version.

The big deal here is that someone now owns all of the SS rights. This means SS3 may actually happen now though unfortunately not by Looking Glass.

>> No.2695875

>>2695872
*the modders could make SSP a fan patch
Whoops.

Anyway, I agree that the GOG version works better at high resolutions however. In the end it's apples to oranges. I don't understand the minimum resolution thing though, especially since it's confirmed to work on much lower.

The important parts (enhanced log text and hi-res objects) are mods that can be installed.

Apparently they solved the reason why the CPU Brake was needed, but no one knows how yet.

Hey, so I bought the game from GOG and tried the Enhanced Edition first. The game runs like shit despite my CPU being higher mid range. Anyone know what's wrong? I say CPU and not GPU because I'm sure the rendering on a game as old as System Shock is done entirely on CPU side, but I could be wrong.

Oh god.

I tried abandonware SS1 at some point. It came from that hellish time where they hadn't quite figured out how to do 3d FPS/rpg things. Clicklook (and not being able to interpret some of the graphics) killed it for me.

>> No.2697759

The only good part of this is the fact that if you have a toaster that sucks at DOSBox, SHLINK reduces the overhead DOSBox adds, so it runs decently.

Literally the only good part.
