You the man, anon! I remember in high school I tried to let my teacher play this song ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9Pga-y7F8k ) during a presentation I was making; she said no because it had nothing to do with the topic. Needless to say, I was crushed.

Harvest Moon SNES

no time limit (only that you must ship your crops before dark each day)
relaxing seasonal music
hand drawn characters (no cgi)
plant crops, water them, harvest them, sell them or give them away.

i particularly like this first game of the series because in the other games there is too much to do for my taste and too much of a social character. the first game has goldielocks conditions for me.

no picture i am on the phone.

How does it compare to the GBC version? It also keeps the social bits and side stuff at bay, as far as I remember

1 and 2 are simplistic. 3 is a great game and it gets better if you have legend of river king since both games communicate through the game link. You DO need to give presents to the fisherman guy or his daughter, I don't remember, to unlock the main land market.

the sound of the SNES and the speed of everything are much more satisfying. gb versions are cool too, but they are a bit fast paced for my taste and the small screen does take a bit away from the experience.

to play harvest moon compfyly the player musn't be too greedy. wanting to make too much money takes away from the simplicity of a farm life experience.

1 is basically the SNES game but with a lot of stuff missing. Pretty barebones.
2 is basically the first GB game but much, much closer to the SNES version
3 actually branches off and is completely original.

I mean honestly, SimCity and Harvest Moon are just so... mindless.

They're really my next picks to purge. I have absolutely no desire to play them ever again. I just purged my Harvest Moon 2 on GBC since Gameboy games are usually awful.

not everybody can appreciate this kind of beauty. some people they always need to be challenged or solve difficult problems. some however do enjoy the quiet subtle beuty of a relaxing game.

you would probably be more interested in a race game or fighting game or puzzleplattformer.

Don't assume, it doesn't make you look good. Your false dichotomy isn't good looking either.

The "problem" with games like SimCity is the lack of direct interaction. There's a bit of indirect manipulation, then waiting. For some players that's not much of a game, and while I love SC2k, I have a hard time picking it up, due to the massive down time.
The "problem" with games like Harvest Moon is the high chore factor. Everything must be done because. Some people seek a different kind of motivation. While I loved the GBC version, at some point the repetition got me. The game's whimsical, adorable, highly recommended, but there came a point when the game played me, when the chores became too dominant.

Meanwhile, some of the most relaxing games I constantly come back to involve going very fast.

precisely because some people are like you i said harvest moon should not be played greedy. when it becomes a chore that means you are working too hard on your virtual farm. some people notice this on their own. you don't. your tendency is to grind. that is why you need games that are restrictive with clear defined goals and time limits.

not every person is the same you know? some people like to be engaged and challenged by the game and pay constant attention to everything, others greate their own way of engaging and do not wish to be disturbed and overwhelmed by the game as it would the experience for them.

It's also why I dropped the comment in >>2689306 It's admittedly a bit trollish, but I stand behind the general point.
The game introduced the population based achievements, implying that the sole goal of the game is population. It's not though, SimCity is much more freeform and open. You can try to make a grid city, you can try to make something european looking, you can try to make arbitrary layouts and try to maintain a positive balance sheet in them, you can make a set of small towns instead of a big one, and so on. The real goal of Sim City is whatever you declare it to be on the current play-through. That openness is a feature, an important one.

While not as stylish, Micropolis is a nicely accessible version of SimCity. Based on the original source code made available by EA itself.
The devs encourage customization and plugin development. I don't know if anybody added the SNES tileset to it though
