Hey, guys. Me and a buddy are thinking of making a game with a throwback to PS1 games and selling it on Steam. Figured it's about time the retro trend goes from atari to playstation era. Models would be low poly with details entirely being texture work. Still not sure if it will have the rounding floating point shaky effect. Think it's worth it? What type of game should it be? Someone said platformer.

>> No.2679821

You got no idea the effort needed to make the art when you take that jump. Get a team then decide based on what the team want to do.

Won't work.

It'll just be considered "shitty"

Its not like its "Shower with your Dad Simulator" where its intentionally stupid and the graphics are bad so you don't have to see real dad dick.

I think you need to make modern 3D games look as good as possible, you can't rely on a gimmick for a game. Most of those stupid shitty 8 or 16 bit style games have shitty graphics because they wanted it to appeal to people who played those games when they were younger, but PS1 graphics look like shit, where as 8 and 16 bit had appeal when done correctly. PS1 graphics just don't hold up as well. Don't get me wrong, PS1 is my most played system, but graphically, it leaves a lot to be desired.

>> No.2679826

1. This is not retro.

2. You only make a game if you have a completely formed vision of what the game should be, whats going to make it fun, how you're going to make it, etc. You don't decide to make a game based on the art style. That shit is the exact same cancer that brought you 20 million indie "retro" platformers.

I can hire a team. Got funds.

>>2679823
I agree on the PS1 look looking shitty and is entirely nostalgia based. But I'm seeing all these retro games that are getting successful with hype, and I figure riding that train with this kind of angle wouldn't be a bad idea. Just requires the right approach and feel to it. Maybe doing a kickstarter since it seems better at getting the word out than just paying for ads on a website.

>>2679826
I'm all with you on that, too, but people will still buy it. I hate it as much as the next person, but I figure it'll be the natural next trend anyway. PS1 was fun likely cause we were raised on it, and there's many others like us who enjoyed games like Crash, Resident Evil, and Metal Gear Solid. The works.

>this is not retro
Are you fucking brain-dead? Yes, the fifth generation is retro, and fifth-generation games and consoles have been posted here for years and make up an assload of the catalog at all times.
>>2679823
There's an abundance of PS1 games that look good, jackass. See pic related.

Gently go fuck yourself, people are giving you their thoughts and you answer like a an enraged toddler.
Talking about developing a product that exploit the retro look is not retro, go and ask your question in that developers general they have on /vg/.

OP here. That isn't me, but I came to /vr/ because you guys have a more likely relatable vision on this.

I want to hijack this thread to ask about the buy/sell/trade threads. Does anyone have the pic? Were they banned or something?(which would be odd, since they are allowed on other boards)

1 Research a bunch of PS1 games on youtube until you find something that you like.
2 Break it down and write a design document like how YOU would make the game.
Then develop from there.

Shovel Knight on Hard Mode is essentially a Ninja Gaiden game with a downstab move. You're forgetting the guys behind Yatch Games also developed Contra 4 which is a brilliant game regardless of its graphics.

Don't badmouth Appaloosa, they were the creators of Ecco.

What was wrong with Contra Legacy of War though? Other than using fucked up 3d with super small camera (that was a standard on 32bit games, since all companies wanted OMG 3D, but 32bit consoles didn't have enough horsepower so they had to make the visible area small to compensate)?

What's the game like mechanic wise? What about a story? Maybe a game where a Tomb Raideresque heroine gets lost in other video games of time (Mario 64, Crash, Grand Turismo, Ocarina of Time, ect.) and violence and chaos ensue.

God I know it has. But looks like maybe there's a chance it might finally get released before new year's. It looks so good too. I'll buy it the day it finally comes out. Not before though. I have a VERY strict policy against paying for kickstarters and early access games.
