Agreed. These games are really popular to hate on because they were so well received, but they were well received because they really were a cut above what we were used to back then. Each one of those games was a completely mind blowing experience for me when I first played them, and there's a good reason they are widely regarded as some of the most influential games of all time.

I would add Mario 64 to that list as it's one of the first games to really nail the experience of exploring a 3d world. When I first saw Mario 64 in action I knew I was seeing the future of gaming.

It's easy to look back and pick apart these games because various aspects of their genres have been improved over the years, but anyone starting off in the 3rd or 4th gens saw the massive leap forward these titles presented back in the day.

This and the sequel. Kids in 2015 don't have a clue how many things they innovated in the still young 3D action-platformer genre. SEGA's butchered ports and shitty offerings haven't helped, but it's like they can't be discussed at all without somebody claiming they're overrated or completely shit. They got rightfully great reviews on release because of their innovations and in spite of their many flaws, it wasn't because everyone was fucking blind, living in denial or some shit.

>Kids in 2015 don't have a clue how many things they innovated in the still young 3D action-platformer genre.

Yeah, it showed you how to do the worst possible camera movement and 3d collission checks.

I was a huge sonic fan at the time but Adventure was a mediocre game AT BEST.

>>2675181

I was a kid when it came out and I don't know what they innovated either. All they did was put old-style platforming levels (Crash/Crock/etc. did this already) with a hub world in between (Banjo, M64).

It's a really charming game though, I admit. Buggy as all fucking hell and in the end not built fantastically, but it did admittedly have some degree of magic to it.

Absolutely loved SA & SA2 when they came out.... but I honestly only really liked the sonic and shadow levels. All the other characters weren't needed or used terribly and the hub world in SA1 was annoying.

>> No.2675364

While the cutscenes probably hold up the worst of anything in the game, I'd probably give them the 'biggest innovation' award. There really weren't many games with the sort of cinematic quality the Dreamcast allowed for back then. From a presentation standpoint it made the games stand out a hell of a lot, but it's these 'dynamic' camera angles that made the gameplay a massive pain in the ass as well. I think giving people a sample of next-gen possibilities definitely factored into the high review scores of the time.

>> No.2675393

>>2675203
The camera is terrible, but SA1's collisions are pretty solid, other than occasionally falling through the ground. You didn't have the "what the fuck that enemy didn't even get near to me/I attacked it" bullshit that plagues the era.

>>2675181
SA1's still got awful stage design as Sonic. Emerald Coast is brilliant. Red Mountain is brilliant. The rest are varying degrees of mediocre/bad.

it got great reviews on release because quite frankly, it was pretty damn impressive for '98/99 visually, and after years of no Sonic, it seemed like
But the poor stage design and grab-bag of half-assed gameplay styles don't help it. It's not a terrible game, but it really is a 6/10. It's sequel is better in many ways, but still deserves about the same score.

Keep in mind how much the reviews dipped literally three years after release -- Sonic Adventure didn't have any lasting power. It looked next-gen as fuck, and once the initial sheen wears off, you're left with an "eh" game. It doesn't deserve to be slammed in the ground as one of the worst games ever (I really do wonder where that came from), but it's not great.

I still wish SA2 wasn't such a mess. Better camera, significantly less glitchy as a whole, consistently better Sonic stage design, improved control (almost -- shit like the fucking somersault wasn't needed at all, but SA2's actual 3D platforming is mostly pretty solid), slightly improved non-Sonic gameplay.
all that comes at the cost of the terrible story, the Tails/Knuckles/Rogue stages are awful, and you can't ignore the absolute worst parts of the game like you could in SA1, the gimped as fuck emerald radar that makes what would be a somewhat fun romp into a chore
Like in SA1, you can just play Sonic, Tails and Knuckles (the three parts of that game I kind of like) on their own and call it a day and have a decent time -- in SA2, you're thrown into hunting and shooting stages when all you want to do is play the much better Sonic/Shadow stages.

>(I really do wonder where that came from)

After six million Let's Plays of Sonic 06 people soon started giving Adventure similar IT'S SO BAD LOOK treatment. Young people who haven't played it for themselves drank the youtube kool aid and now think it's on the same level. My younger sister lumped it in with Sonic 06 and Sonic Boom as 'the worst games ever' a few weeks back, like what the fuck.

Considering the ineptitude at SEGA at the time it's amazing there were any Sonic fans left after six years of lackluster spin-offs and no main game. SA1 was even planned for a Saturn release early on, I have no idea how it could've translated but it's an interesting thought.

Sonic '06 was so bad because Sega thought the standards of Sonic Adventure would still be acceptable 7 years later.

>>2675393

The 360 port of Sonic Adventure has a 48 on Metacritic. Sonic '06 has a 46.

Absolutely, people just put too much stock into numbers these days. I think >>2675209 use of the word 'charming' describes the biggest difference, with Adventure you really get the sense they tried their hardest and everything was pretty experimental, with 06 it's just lazy, recycled content with a new coat of paint, even though both are basically the same idea.

DKC2 is pretty much the single greatest 2D platformer and excels in all areas though, its good reviews need no justification.
