3 days shy of the anniversary, got anything lined up to play?

I want to get through more of Shenmue II.

This year I may play other retro games too during this time. I've not been doing that in general, not just the Dreamcast.

I been playing through Shenmue II. Damn that game is overwhelming compared to the first.

I recently got the "goblin" arcade stick from Japan. Now I can finally play Cosmic Smash the way it was meant to be played and wow what a difference. Its so much more fun to play now.

I played some Bust a Move 4, Guilty Gear X, Bass Fishing (need the fishing rod controler) picked up Daytona USA, looking for Rayman 2 and waiting on my copy of Vampire Chronicles to show up.

This is the only way I've played PSO. I got into it long after the servers had shut down, so playing offline was my only option.

The hub area seems pretty empty since there aren't any other players around, but there are still various NPCs you can chat with. Sometimes, NPC allies accompany you on missions and help you fight your way through the area.

I enjoyed it.

I think on 9/9 I'm gonna play some more PSO, and try to (finally) finish Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation. Might get some Test Drive Le Mans in there too, because I like to just do freeruns while listening to music to unwind.

Might stream some gameplay too (my capture card supports VGA in, which is awesome).

I'd played Crazy Taxi on my DC on its anniversary.

was kind of depressing, my disc has issues and the stage stopped loading halfway (so I was driving through nothing) through my run and I ended up flipping it upside down and all was better

none of my other DC games do anything like this, and none of my burns either
should probably burn another copy -- was using the original GD-ROM

>>2676114
well, the lightguns are
but I haven't seen any game on my US DC complain that my controller was from PAL-land

>> No.2678308

>>2675807
Bad media and weak burns are bad for your reader drives, including consoles, partially because they can be full of errors (forcing re-reads) from any number of physical or chemical flaws. Bad for your burners too in the long term, since they can require more power applied to your laser to burn, and/or require slower burning.

Use a good burner with updated firmware, use reliable media instead of cheap crap, and burn at the speed that produces the fewest errors in burn testing software for that particular drive/firmware/media combination *as tested in a drive that is known as a good reader* (important, some good burners are not necessarily the best readers and vice versa). Faster burning is better as long as it doesn't produce more numerous or more severe errors. Slower wears your burner's laser down more but reducing read errors should always be a priority.

Also keep in mind that Dreamcast lasers in particular are notorious for needing to be recalibrated just to read crappy burns after years of doing it without any apparent problems. So just because a crappy CDR/burn seemingly works well the first time, that won't last forever.

>>2673142
>>2674478
I'm anti-bootleg (but pro-backup and pro-beta). I do know that RDC deleted some of their own releases from the regular distribution channels due to some unexplained dissatisfaction over quality.

>>2678020
Is your Crazy Taxi scratched or does it look foggy in any way? Also, does the printed top of the disc feel overly thick or heavy compared to other discs? I'm curious about your problem.

>Is your Crazy Taxi scratched or does it look foggy in any way? Also, does the printed top of the disc feel overly thick or heavy compared to other discs? I'm curious about your problem.

it's very mildly scratched, disc doesn't look any foggier than any of my other GD-ROMs, top of the disc doesn't seem to have any issues.
It worked fine when I got it, could just be that I got unlucky and it's scratched somewhere important and the drive's error correction isn't able to deal with it.

and the DC seems to read better when I flip it upside down
I'd adjusted the laser on it before -- a while back, my DC would only read games properly when upside down (wasn't the lid sensor, it was throwing disc read errors at me instead of just dropping me to the bios menu), it's been fine post-calibration, other than Crazy Taxi wanting me to flip it upside down

Does the hub area around the hole have any cracks in it, or feel thin/brittle?

Also, if you shine a flashlight through the label side of the disc, do you see any non-opaque spots or lines from the other side? Slightly translucent is normally fine, but any patches where the light shines through very brightly could be quite bad.

> Quake III Arena

> 4x4 Evolution

etc. The only game I can think of where the PS2 version is actually better than the DC version is Half Life, which has significantly better models and a better framerate on the PS2 version compared to the leaked Dreamcast version (this was mainly due to the difference in RAM between the two systems, 16MB vs 32MB).

Poorly burned discs don't force a reading laser to work harder but it will produce errors and force re-reads of the same sectors to attempt error correction. Just logs extra time on your drives, that's the only kind of wear.

Some discs force your burner to work harder by requiring more power to burn though.
