Pinball Arcade is the way to go.

It's the closest to the real thing, has some good challenges/goals for each table, and does a great job at explaining the tables and how the modes and scoring works for each one.

Some people like PinballFX as well. It is more "video game" like with unreal tables and physics.

I find it pretty hard to go back to older pinball video games that are either static screens or with completely topdown views.

Visual Pinball 9.9.1 is nothing compared to Virtual Pinball 9.9.0 PhysMod beta 5, the ultimate Windows-based computer experience.

Pinball Arcade is laughable now to me. I have over 100 fullscreen PhysMod5 tables set up, all with the scripts fixed so they'll actually run without the flippers fucking up from backglass servers and shit.

This is tight, all the good tables. Sterns too. Finally got Spiderman (2007) working. I made a pack before but you still need to install and set it up right...now even more to install and way more tables. Found big stashes. Mother loads.

Anyone who's already got Visual Pinball set up, get the PhysMod5 binary and drop it in the deal. And check out this new hotness, tables.

PhysMod5 runs physics at 1000 MHz, 1000 calcs / second. Regular is 100 / second. So when you play PhysMod5 exe with normal tables, everything movies in slow motion. But look how smooth the flippers move.

It's good for playing around, but it won't work for playing. PhysMod5 tables have the friction and gravity and a lot of other variables tweaked so that the table will work with the real physics. Floaty regular VP physics don't even have ball spin!

I can only imagine where that table was before, because holy FUCK was that machine turned up to 11. I still played it, but it was very unpleasant, and the staff agreed. Of course, because there would be concerns about workers stealing the cash, they didn't have a key for the coin door on location, so I couldn't turn it down, which sucked hard. Next time I'm going there, I'm bringing some ear plugs, because that table wasn't just loud as hell, it was fast and unforgiving too, and it made it personal. I can only guess that whoever installed that machine must have been a big Kiss fan and loves to play it loud. Either that, or it was at an incredibly noisy venue. Like, a table like Kiss does very much lend itself to playing it loud, but they just went overboard on that one.

>>2661997

They'd probably refund and shit, they just can't fix things. The staff all seem pretty friendly - as they probably have to be, as casinos are all over the god damn place here and customer service is one of the few ways you can set yourself apart from the others.

There was a problem with the Stern Playboy, in that the post that was supposed to pop up when you hit the shot right of the center ramp that then lets the shot bounce into the Grotto just wouldn't come up. Ironic, the table with bare titties all over the place can't get its rod up. Anyway, my dad and I were arguing about what could be causing the problem for a fairly long time, but at the end of the day, all we could work out without getting the glass off or access to the diagnostics menu is that "something was wrong", and the staff on site couldn't do much more than write down our description of the problem and forward it to the tech guys, which seem to be separate from the casino itself, I think?

I have yet to run into an op anywhere around here that has actually been a pleasure to work with. Shit fucking sucks.

I loved Super Pinball, didn't learn about Digital Pinball for a decade later and oh man it was a such a huge treat.

Last Gladiators is okay, but Necronomicon is much better, by the way. It's also more similar to Super Pinball 1 in some ways. I still consider it the best computer pinball game ever made. Any newer game can only top it in graphics fidelity and gimmicks, but not in sheer badassness.

Just consider: Dream Theater style prog metal music (Petrucci even wrote the intro), Lovecraft themed tables and features, hi-res graphics, 7 ball Multiball modes. And nonstop creepy as heck narration about how the Book of the Dead holds dark knowledge from beyond the Wall of Sleep, and it might cost your soul to read it (all the tables are based on a librarian reading the Necronomicon, and the secrets he learns from it).

There was also a japan-only re-release of Last Gladiators that featured better game physics, but it also made the game a bit harder IMO. It's much difficult to get balls up on ramps on that one. But it's true that on the original version, it was like if the balls were unaffected by gravity.

Working on building a complete Mega link with all necessary files and 89 unique fullscreen PM5 tables (broken tables fixed).

It's best with two monitors so you can turn one and have the score display or backglass (if an EM) on the other. Not needed though, the backglass can always run behind the table.

Tables have been re-scripted to work with a normal desktop setup. Running solid state tables with backglasses trips up the flippers unless you disable certain things. I'll just take the DMD.

I only use it for EM tables (with the analog scoring) since it runs twice with SS (rom) tables unless you disable the right things.

It works fine with EM tables because only one scoring mechanism is running. With SS and backglass the flippers mess up and stick or don't deploy 5% of the time.

So the Fast Draw and OXO and Road Race tables I use the backglass server and it works fine. Everything else I set to run only with VPinMAME.

Also, it's no problem. PhysMod5 tables are so precious and hard to find sometimes / get working that I needed a central backup depository.

Plus this way if anyone finds any more they can go up to the Mega without changing any links. There are more out there but they were released without certain modders' or authors' permissions and squashed. They're meant to be played, by us.

The problem seems to be that the physics are so good that these tables are what they run on the $5000 virtual cabinets at shows. "Hey, check out this Back to the Future, real physics!" Isn't that more of a problem than me trying to play someone's free work on my personal computer?

Also, there are hundreds and hundreds of more tables at vpforums.org and vpuniverse.com for running with the normal Visual Pinball 9.9.1 with more "video-gamey" physics. Still better than Pinball Arcade, and almost any table one could want has been attempted with success.

PhysMod5 / (future) VP10 Physics:

• Physics framerate raised from 100 Hz to 1000 Hz. This increases the smoothness, accuracy and stability of the physics simulation.

• Physics now always use a fixed timestep. This eliminates all FPS dependence of the physics code and makes smooth gameplay at vsynced framerates possible.

• Proper simulation of ball spin. All rotational effects are fully simulated: the ball will properly pick up spin from moving over the playfield and other objects, and collisions with playfield objects will take the spin into account to deflect the ball properly.

• Simulation of friction on contact and collisions. This goes hand in hand with the previous point since friction with the playfield is the main source of ball spin, and frictional effects during collisions cause the ball to deflect according to spin. In particular, the ball will now properly transition from sliding over the playfield to rolling on it. This means that it will first convert some translational kinetic energy into rotational energy until it enters a natural roll, at which point friction doesn't do much anymore and the ball is free to roll. The stored up rotational energy has the effect that the ball needs a bit more force put into it to get it to move or stop it again.

• Flippers are now simulated as true dynamic rigid bodies which have forces from the solenoid, the return spring and the ball acting on them and accelerate accordingly. They will also properly bounce off their stoppers instead of just moving to maximum extension and then stopping. In practice, this means that flipper/ball interaction is now much more realistic and less binary. Post passes, light taps, cradle separations, drop and live catches are now all possible. Furthermore, the simulation of the friction of the flipper rubbers greatly improves aiming.

Can mess with the mechanical strength and release speed to adjust the "spring" to your tastes.

If Stern is going to keep making TV show pins, I hope they stop doing current crap and do something more cult and classic, like Monty Python or MST3K. Both are ripe with awesome themes for mode ideas. I'm tired of bands and superhero tables.

>> No.2673013

Stern will never do a non-cheesy license. It's all up to Gary, everyone's hands are tied. Stern will never do a non-licensed game either. Over half the Stern titles have a ® or ™ on the end, and then you have AMC's™ The Walking Dead that put them in the middle of the title.

CSI, 24, whatever. Every post on Stern's Facebook the last few days has been antagonistic and mocking potential customers, saying they're the only game in town and they're going to keep stripping features from games further and further. Then banning anyone who questions them.

The line has been drawn in the sand. It's Stern vs. the pinball consumer now, and it will be a battle to the death. Good thing there will be other companies after Gary dies.

>> No.2673140

So I'm kind of all new to the pinball thing, anyone mind filling me in on what's up with Stern and why they're bad? Legit question.

>> No.2673220

Mostly boring, shitty tables dressed up with flashy licensed themes. There are only about 3 tables worth playing at all. The bigger problem is that they're pretty much the only game in town for new tables, and they know it. Jersey Jack has risen up to challenge them, but so far it's just a "beat them at their own game" approach (ie. make the table prettier than it is fun). We'll see if The Hobbit changes that.

>> No.2673556

>>2673140
What tables have you physically played in your experience? When you're out playing pinball try to gauge and compare the quality of the build and design of what you're playing.
Most Stern tables at first glance just appear really cheap and poorly constructed compared to Williams Bally (etc) tables of 15+ years ago.
I'm not a huge fan of Stern but I'm a little more forgiving than some other anons in these pinball threads, when there's slim pickings out in the wild and you don't have much choice Stern can sate your pinball fix, but save for a few tables they crank out a lot of cruddy shit.
And being the only major producer of pinball left it's like they're flaunting the fact that they can get away with mass produced shit.

And while we're shitting on Stern what's their worst pinball in your own opinion?

>> No.2673635

>>2673140
Because when people call them bad for stripping games, they come up with a 3-tier system for each game in which the base model is actually the median-priced model, with 2K added to the price. The then-base model is that base model with a ton of features stripped out, as much to save money as to act as a disincentive to purchase the cheapest table.

Then there's the Limited Edition, which has new art and a signature and a certificate of authenticity for $1300 more.

In the new GoT table, pictured above, you see the expensive table has an upper playfield and way more features. Then there's the cheap model, and the table looks almost empty like a half-pinball you buy at Costco.

Stern's got all the talent though. What are you going to do, find Nordman elsewhere? Trudeau, Gomez, Ritchie, Borg? The software team? Dwight Sullivan is on now. They're limited by Gary and his Bill of Materials. It's all that matters at Stern, the bottom line raw cost of production. Designers hamstrung.

Learn what shots on any given table risk a SDTM (Straight down the middle) or outlane gutterball on a fail (or success) and be ready to nudge. And yeah "Hit ball good" is some of it, accurate shooting is important.

That said, many tables are designed with nasty outlanes or SDTM shots. They're meant to eat your quarters afterall. Pic related, that left outlane is a personal nemesis of mine, I swear it has a ball-attracting tractor beam.

For accurate shooting, one intermediate tip I can give you is often times graphics on the table just in front of the flippers can sometimes be used as a reference point, but overall its mostly just getting a feel for the machine (its never the same, one machine might have pristine, strong flippers while another's are so worn out they struggle to make it up ramps and such).

Can we talk about one of the best modern tables?

It took me quite a few games to figure (most) of it out but once you do it is great. The theme and colors are fantastic. I really enjoy the crystal ball modes too.

Also a little secret I learned, once you light haunted you can hold both flippers to reduce the pop on the bumpers making the ball more likely to drop down to the crystal ball spot.

This is a re-themed game. It used to be Williams' 1963 'Big Deal'. The playfield art was not changed. The backglass art is by Dave Christensen.

Designed by Herb Silvers of Fabulous Fantasies. Only four games were produced. As of 1998, Herb reported 1 is in a gentlemen's club in New York. 1 is in a private collection in Texas, 1 went to Wurlco in Philly and Fabulous Fantasies has the proto, complete with DC electronics and sound effects. In 2001, one was auctioned on Ebay. In 2002, one was reported in a bar in Washington, Missouri called "Big Johnsons Doc Haus". Only its backglass had come from Fab Fan; its then-owner had brass-plated the metal and repainted the cabinet to match the factory design. It was later sold to a collector in New Jersey.

250 of the backglasses were sold. Although the plaque says 20 were to be made, there are no plans to make additional machines beyond the 4 produced.

I don't think you could safely operate this table up in person, it would have to be recessed up in a table and you'd be in a booth in front of it, controlling the paddles and plunger electronically.
Have the gargantuan scoreboard up on the wall and all.

Of course, you couldn't tilt the table, not without a huge rig which the table would have to rest on, also remote controlled.

I think it would probably also warrant thick bulletproof glass to cover the table, lest the bowling ball shoot off somewhere like a fucking cannonball, flying out a window and demolishing a bus-stop or a school or something.

>> No.2694810

Agreed on the operation booth.

The rig could probably be based on the counterweight system used in skyscrapers to offset earthquake vibrations. I'm sure the same tech could be tweaked to destabilize then correct the table.

And shit, everything on the playfield would have to be designed to be spall resistant.

I nod and translate that as he od's a lot when he has smack and often times dies for 8 hours but the earth refuses to take his body due to his immunity to death and disease so he returns to life later that day.

These 85vette tables are sort of lazy. The flippers don't even line up on X-Men. PhysMod5 and a friction setting of 0.0000005? Every table is ice, needs reworking.

How hard is it to make a table from scratch? Need original draft material showing real measurements. If the tables now are just guesswork, why can't tables be made accurately on highest resolution playfields?

My favorite thing about the pinball tables where I work is that it does not seem to occur to many people that $1 is worth two credits, not one, so there are always free games waiting for me to play.
Which is good because sometimes I'll have really off plays that end instantly.

Whitestar Stern is even better because you can milk the replay if it's set low enough...let it come down from doubling with a game loss then earn more.

Either way I love everything about it. When I was a kid playing that game I was in the Solar System with nobody else but the Pinbot.

Too much work for me, I'm not knowledgeable enough to tackle this. It's just the playfield so finding a backbox and body would be nigh on impossible for such an old rare EM table, it's the even rarer German edition to boot.

I've never owned nor fixed a pinball before so this is too deep for me. Shame though, Big Valley looks like such a good classic table, released in 1970 and has multiball!

This piece will probably end up on someone's wall or in a coffee table.

Anyone feel like a new thread? I felt this was a very cozy and homely little thread for Pinball.

>> No.2706271

Owned a pinball machine for over a decade. We were never able to fix it. Degraded slowly.

Want to own a good one now but afraid of the same thing. Even these collectors who fix their own have to call the pinball repairman sometimes, then they send a fool out who just gets wide eyes and doesn't know what to do and charges you for showing up. This isn't what I'm looking for.

New in box would just break also, wouldn't it? There must be a way to own a quality DMD Williams game and have it stay nice without not playing it.

Yeah we need to bring back the Pinball generals.
Here is some useful info someone posted early in this thread. Could maybe touch it up and refine it if need.
