Why was Shadows of the Empire so creepy?

>> No.2662489

>>2662476
The star wars videogames understood the universe better than george lucas himself ever did. The sounds that junkyard boss made, man, still gives me the chills.

>> No.2662495

Because you were like eight years old when you played it

Still, nothing in that game is as creepy as dianogas in Dark Forces

>> No.2662501

same reason a lot of n64 games are creepy: the low rez textures coupled with no sound chip and limited sounds just equaled creepy as fuck atmosphere

shadows of the empire was near the peak of 'adult' star wars expanded universe, it was dark, it was before they 'kiddied up' the whole franchise again for the prequels and everything since.

each level was like a whole different type of star wars game. the hoth and space levels are amazing

I finally beat this game recently after never being able to beat it as a kid (in part due to having a bootleg cart that didn't save)
The Black Sun gladiator in Xizor's Palace is one really annoying boss fight, and you're fucked if you didn't stock up missiles throughout the game up to that point.

The good thing is that the last mission is one of the best parts in the game, like a reward for enduring the tough on-foot levels that make the majority of the game.

>> No.2662603

I have never seen this done before, and I tried many times. But you know how the stormtroopers will make the wilhelm scream when falling off a cliff? we shot one of the brown wompas in the boba fett level (i think) and the wompa fell off the cliff but made a wompa-esque wilhelm scream while falling. We tried to replicate it many times but never could. anyone elese ever had this happen?

This game was one of the most playable titles at the time.

>> No.2662648

I'm playing it right now (emulated). I remember that flying a speeder during the battle of Hoth was a fanboy wet dream. Now it's been done better in several games, and the rest of the game is kinda janky, but I still think it's pretty cool. Not nearly as cool as Dark Forces IMO, but it's different, so I wouldn't compare them too much.

I really like that the game gives you a recharging jetpack.

Wow, this game is a lot shorter than I remembered from watching other people play it back in the day. More linear, too. The plot's pretty flimsy with how it tries to shoehorn serious events with Luke and Leia in between Empire and Jedi, should have kept Dash off to the side doing his own thing and only occasionally crossing paths. Still like that jetpack though.

Kyle Katarn > Dash Rendar
non-Jedi Kyle Katarn > everything

>>2662489
This. Man 90's Star Wars games really were the shit.

>>2662863
The plot is based on the novel Shadows of the Empire, which as I understand features Luke and Leia pretty heavily. It also ties in with the comic of the same name.

I'm not sure if I've ever knocked a wompa off, but I remember when I was a kid using the gameshark to turn myself into the wompa and being able to play as it (though you can't get through much of the level as one, unfortunately). It would probably be an easy way to test it if you have a gameshark available/

THERE IS A PC VERSION
> December 1996 as an exclusive N64 title 4 months after the console's launch.[1] The PC version came nearly a year later in September 1997.

>The PC version has sharper and smoother gameplay graphics when using a 3D card.
>the PC version has full-motion cinematic cutscenes with sound effects and voices, while the N64 version utilizes artwork with text at the bottom of the screen.

>> No.2663474

The physics for Dash are kind of interesting. It's neat how if you look around, his head turns and his torso twists independently. Also, when you use the jetpack, he bobs around like he's danging from a string attached to his head, which isn't realistic but gives a nice floaty feeling.

Which was often better, compared to the horrible CG cutscenes of the PS1. Only few games look like Oddworld.

Not that anon, but he does kinda have a point. Most FMV CG cutscenes of that era were pretty shitty looking, with only a couple (the Oddworld games like he said or almost any Squaresoft game after FFVII for example) being the exceptions. Of course, this is all just opinion in the end though.

It's just ugly awkwardly voice acted 3D, you can find videos on youtube. Not a big loss, I actually like the N64 cutscenes better.

It's also really hard to run on modern 64-bit systems. I guess it's better to just run it on a VM.

I agree, the sprite-based cutscenes are still images with little animation but I still like them, they are more iconic, and they look like classic LucasArts pixel art. I appreciate them more too.

You guys are hating on the PC cutscenes too much. They're certainly "of the era" but the graphics and voice acting are significantly above average for 1997.

What I think is superior about them is they show you more pre-mission and do a slightly better job tying the missions together. Like, you actually see the Outrider land inside the Hoth hangar, setting up the base you'll be inside in the next level, and you get a flyover of the train tracks and junkyard for the IG-88 level. You also get to hear how "Xizor" is supposed to be pronounced, heh.

I like the pixelated pictures too, though. I think Dark Forces did it the best with a mix of drawn characters, voice acting, and occasional animation, plus additional unvoiced text for the mission briefing.

>>2664896
Yeah those animated cutscenes look just like the comic art. It works with the game perfectly. Haven't seen the cgi cutscenes to compare to, but in all fairness most cgi cutscenes from back then have aged horribly (with the exception of some of the later ps1 games).

and this is one of the reasons I've never been able to handle underwater levels in 3d games, low draw distance, and they always put the most nightmarish creatures in them
