Blood 2 and Shogo running on a P2/S3 Virge PC. Everything on maximum potato quality.

They were still fun overall but shit was rather clunky. Blood at least had fun weapon variety. Shogo had me clip through several levels for no apparent reason in Mech mode, but getting a lucky glitch where you carry around your mech weapon in human/on foot mode during a boss fight is hilarious, just as much as making a jobber out of that recurring boss girl mech who still loses to you when you're on foot.

I've always loved FPS.

I remember as a teenager, on an early wednesday afternoon I took a bus ride to town to check the vidya stores. At the time there still was a "used PC games" shelf, and while browsing it I stumbled upon Daikatana. I check the game of box, and it said
>by the maker of Quake and Doom
Holy shit! A FPS game by the guy who did Quake and Doom, that I never heard before, AND it's not too expensive? That was an excited instant buy.

I remember reading the booklet on the bus back home being exciting about all the cool shit this cool game would have.

Not even 3 hours later I was back at the store, to sell the game back to them and loosing a few bucks on the process. Same guy I bought the game to a few hours earlier, he said nothing the whole time.

I guess you can say Romero made me his bitch.

Yeah, that's a Build engine game. I have checked it out of curiosity for "anything-Build" but I could never play it since it's multiplayer only.

I guess the concept is kinda stupid, Paintball is having fun imitating real shooting, so are FPS; so it's kinda redundant.

I don't even understand how Romero fucked that game up so bad. I mean, you can clearly feel the lack of his presence on Quake 2 following Quake's combat, but then he went and somehow made one of the shittiest FPS's ever. Like, what the fuck? How did he even release in that state? Did he not play the game while making it and realise what a gigantic piece of shit it was?

It goes to show that it's never really just one dude that makes a game. It's an entire team each with their own flair and taste to the product rather than just one superstar.

It's buggy. There's some charm to it but the story, dialogue and gameplay are all kind of bad. The amount of decals and sounds are kind satisfying though.

It's not bad but it's clunkier than Blood 2 in some points. The Critical Hit system can work for you or against you but yeah. Overall it ain't bad. Mech weapons are way better than the on-foot ones though.

Also

>Using the Magic Claw doll on the Mech when on foot

Fuck yeah.

Also, the lithtech engine did iron itself out for games like AVP2 and NOLF at least. So it's all good.

Romero was basically a grown up version of the retarded kid who likes metal in high school, think of Beavis and Butthead. Every crappy idea he had in mind in his older games he put it in Daikatana without anyone telling that they don't work/they need to be retooled.

Oh, I want my game to have a RPG-like character progression, better add stupid stats that make little sense, unlike say, Deus Ex, where even if they weren't that brilliant they made sense since it wasn't an all-out action FPS and they gave you a tangible feeling of how you built your character.
Oh, this game is for expert FPS players, so saves are limited by savegems you can find by locating secrets, enemies are all fucking annoying to fight, levels are a terrible pain to navigate and you can hurt yourself and for a lot of damage too.
Oh, let's give to the players two useless AI controlled ethnic caricatures, because that's what expert FPS players want, every single fucking level to be an escort mission for two dumb NPCs that can kill you if you give them weapons.
Oh, let's make the wildest weapons we can, because gimmicky weapons like a staff that evokes a demon that instantly kills you if there's no enemy nearby, a plasma gun whose projectiles bounce wildly on walls risking to kill you, a shotgun that always shoots six shot in succession making it terrible for close range combat, a melee weapon that has a AoE attack and a grenade launcher whose explosions are almost as big as its range are useful and fun to use.
Oh, and let's make levels with multiple maps, even if the engine is not good for it, so you can look at a loading screen for most of your time.

It's such a fucking mess, and the story is even "inspired" from Chrono Trigger, meaning it's just jumping through time with little to no reason doing random stuff.

Problem is, the RoF in this shotgun is quite slow, and what's worse, it has to play a reloading animation between salvos that's quite long, AND it has knockback, making you lose aim and risk falling down from platforms. Story on that is rather sad to be honest. He dreamed too big.

It was largely made on the Quake 1 engine, but when he saw the Quake 2 engine with dynamic lighting he thought it would overshadow the his game too much.

So he waits for the code for the new engine but finds its ten times more complex and adapting the game turns his company into a tense misery pit, the exact thing Quake 1 did to Id Software that he had tried so hard to avoid.

Over budget and out of time now that he had lost control of Ion Storm while fighting on the programming and corporate fronts at the same time he had a hard deadline and had to kick his dream game out the door no where near finished.

Its not that he didn't know, its by that time half the staff had quit, the other half was burned out, and Ion Storm was no longer in his control so he wasn't the boss anymore to delay it for polish.

>>2650240
That was more Doom II and maybe early Daikatana by the end he was busting ass, but his team was falling part by then and gaming had evolved into needing a team not just one brilliant guy anymore.

I hate Daikatana not for being a shit game there are plenty worse it at least had some ideas, but for being the final damage to a great game designer. For that matter I hate Quake a bit for the same reason. Fuck me imagine if Id hadn't ripped in half.
