Can we have a thread for it? This game took SaGa's formula and blew it out of the fucking water. Granted, it is riddled with small problems that prevented it from achieving its full potential but that didn't stop it from being an awesome experience. It is unfortunate that it had to go against Final Fantasy 6 when being picked for a translation in a time when RPGs weren't more popular in the west, but maybe it's for the best that it didn't get a shitty translation and censoring.

What are your personal thoughts, favorite moments and most disliked moments?

>> No.2649985

Thought it was a interesting game with neat ideas that could have maybe could have been executed better. Overall I enjoyed the experience it gave, albeit even if it was short compared to other RPGs.
Favorite chapter was probably the mecha one, if only for the battle theme:

Thanks for the link! I had come across that channel before but only now realized how good the music quality was for this game's OST.

I don't think Akira's chapter is bad but it does pretty much sum up the flaws that the game had. Having to guess whose mind you should read and being somehow chased by those bikers from across the overworld map was pretty bad. Plus, the item creation system failing for no reason was completely unnecessary.

Unfortunately, pic related is the only quality I can find the art for the Flow chapter in the web. If anyone knows of a better source please say so. I'll dump what I have later.

This is the only villain theme that has sent chills down my spine every time I heard it. I'm so glad it is used again for the first part of the final battle.

>> No.2650186

I love it, it focuses on the good parts of JRPGs (mainly storytelling, setting and characters) instead of bloating it with banal shit, it tells 8 great stories in less time than it would take for the usual JRPG to reach it's halfway point.

What?
Having multiple protagonists is now a SaGa formula?
The games have nothing in common and play nothing alike.

I swear LaL is breeding the new generation of Earthbound/Mother retards

What the fuck is your problem? SaGa was the most popular RPG at the time to feature the mechanic of picking any character to start the game and having them join each other later. Of course they play nothing alike, otherwise Live A Live would be considered a ripoff. Breeding a new generation? I really don't think you should keep clicking on threads if that's the kind of bullshit you're gonna spout on them.

>>2650186
Then again, if only it was a bit longer, maybe they could have explained some plot points better. I mean, what is a liquified human?

>Of course they play nothing alike
Then why did OP say that the game took another game's formula if they play nothing alike? That's serious misinformation in respect to both games and only idiots would spread such bullshit. I played the shit out of LaL and SaGa but I would never even dream of saying something like that, you don't say that Kirby took Mario's formula of having different powers do you?

Not to mention that with all due respects, LaL didn't blow anything out of the water really, except Pogo and Oersted's chapters all the rest is just a collection of references to pop culture with barebones RPG gameplay.

Uh, what? Live-A-Live is just a watered down version of SaGa's mechanics.

On the other hand, you can tell Zaki has one of his own across the face instead of a strand of hair, as his battle sprites could lead you to believe.

>personal thoughts
I honestly think this has the best presentation among JRPGs, ever. Probably THE best SNES JRPG, although FFV is a close contender for me. Admittedly it is very weak in the replay value department, but the first time you play it you'll be blown right away.

Also Yoko Shimomura is literally god.

>favorite moments
You know, that part. I cry like a bitch every time. Favorite chapter in general is probably Sundown's because of how unique and flavorful it is.

>most disliked moments
The Ninja chapter is very unique and has neat ideas but the amount of backtracking and trial and error is infuriating. I've completed the game like five times and I've never bothered to try and 100% the Ninja chapter.

It's a bit strange to consider it the best SNES RPG, specially with such strong contenders like Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, Shin Megami Tensei, Super Mario RPG, Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games. I have to agree the presentation on Live A Live is awesome and had the idea been executed better it would easily rank above the others I just mentioned.

I'm glad you found a game you love, OP, but spamming your own thread in an effort to incite more discussion on /vr/ is just going to drive people away from the game, not create more interest. Nobody else is this autistic for Live-A-Live and probably never will be.

>> No.2650683

>>2650676
Maybe it's not the absolute best but it was certainly one of the most unique ones. It had the whole package of GOAT JRPG qualities too: amazing music, tons of flavor, unique presentation and fun tactical gameplay instead of grinding (for most of the game). Only flaws I can name are the lack of customization and replay value, but few SNES RPGs can boast that in the first place. For me at least, it certainly beats SMRPG, FFIV, CT and Earthbound.

Out of curiosity, what do you feel could be executed better?

>> No.2650689

I'm only replying to other posts and posting the art because it's so hard to find on other places. You do know you can see how many different IPs have posted in a thread right? What's the point of your post?

>>2650683
The battle mechanics feel unpolished without being able to see how far you can move and the levelling system going way overboard what's actually necessary to beat the game. Some chapters feel too long and others like they lack the extra content. Also, some more character development would have been appreciated. That's it for now but maybe I'll think of something else later.

I think this article points out the flaws in the game quite nicely:

http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/livealive/livealive.htm

It's good to keep in mind the experimental nature of the game when playing it so you can judge it properly, though, which I feel is something the author didn't quite take into consideration.
