2640710 No.2640710 [Reply] [Original]

I grew up with a Spectrum and a Mega Drive and only played a few games (Sonic, Alex Kidd and Fantasy Zone) on my cousins Master System and feel like i'm missing out.

I never see it being talked about on /vr/ either.

What are the must play games for this system.

>> No.2640715

Space Harrier ofc

>> No.2640718

Ultima IV
Wonder Boy III
all sonics
Fire & Forget II
Golvelius
R-Type
Zillion
Zillion 2
Power Strike

Also, use FM expansion

>> No.2640726

if you can give it a try, Missile Command 3D is pretty fun (albeit short).

Physics: yes
Lag: no

Sonic games on SMS play quite differently than the Megadrive versions, and somewhat feel like a different IP altogether except for the characters and settings. Most are still fun nonetheless.

Also, if you have access to a Game Gear, try Tails' Adventure.

i'm playing on a Wii Emulator so it could be that tho there does seem to be a lag or framerate issue.

>> No.2640840

I'm not sure which regions any of these games were released in, but if I'm not mistaken, aren't SMS games basically region-free? I think the system itself makes the appropriate signal adjustments.

Anyway, my recommendations:

Kenseiken - A good action game in the same vein as Shinobi or Ninja Gaiden. You control a samurai and travel across Japan defeating various warlords. Your character can go to training levels to receive health and skill upgrades along the way.

Golden Axe Warrior - A very good Zelda clone set in the Golden Axe universe.

Penguin Land - A puzzle platformer where you control a penguin that has to protect an egg while descending down several floors filled with enemies and obstacles. If you even drop the egg too great a distance, it will break.

Streets of Rage series - These were backported to SMS, or maybe it was the other way around. If you like beat-'em-ups, these games should be right up your alley.

Rastan - An action platformer in a fantasy setting.

Columns - Sort of like Tetris, but you match adjacent gems of the same type instead of clearing lines.

That should read *Kenseiden

Asterix and Asterix: The Secret Mission are among the best platformers for the system, thanks to Sega. The later is also known as As Aventuras da TV Colosso in Brazil.
There is a third game, but it's made by Core and not that good.

North American and PAL region SMS games are fully compatible, but Mark III stuff needs an adapter since the cartridge pinout is different.

>> No.2641595

>>2640863
Is an adapter really all you need? I was under the impression that they'd fail still because Mark III games lack a checksum, as the overseas Master System, unlike the Mark III, has a BIOS that checks the checksum of the game. This is also why Japanese Sega MyCards don't work on an EU SMS even though they slot in perfectly fine.

But I haven't actually got an adapter so if you say that works I'll just take your word for it.

Master of Darkness is a surprisingly excellent Castlevania clone for the SMS, looks great, plays great. Pretty easy though if you care about challenge.

>> No.2643728

Everything mentioned, Power Strike, Phantasy Star and Ys 1.

>> No.2644063

>>2641595
no you are correct. You can play master system games on a mark 3 with a convertor because it doesnt do the check. But japanese games will not work on the mastersystem

the ninja

who actually beat it? as a kid I think I got close but I watched a full playthrough and don't imagine I would've figured out where to find the scrolls and shit

I do remember climbing up the waterfall and the horse stage though

definitely didn't beat wonderboy 3, want to do that soon, doesn't seem too hard

>> No.2645919

>>2644063
pretty sure some of the us and jap games use the same roms. go try it in an emulator, some of them will have a 'mark III' splash screen if they detect the japan machine setting.

its the earlier sg1000 games that will fail the western bios check.

fun fact: the sms video chip could be used in pairs, much like the pcengine, except unlike nec, it was used in the arcade not at home. go try the "system e" games in mame (eg fantasy zone 2/the maze)

There a quite a few good "clones" on the system. Zillion for Metroid, Golden Axe Warriors for Zelda and Golvellius/Zelda II.
And thanks due to it's popularity in Europe and especially in Brazil it got a lot of back ports, "demakes", of Mega Drive games. Sonic, Dynamite Headdy, Ristar, Chakan, the Illusion series and even Gunstar Heroes.

hey without SMS covers we wouldn't have the BEST cover

>> No.2646206

Ninja Gaiden on SMS is a completely new game, but very similar to the NES trilogy. I haven't beaten it yet since every time I try I run into the glitch where if you max out your MP it stays maxed permanently. Then it's too easy to abuse and fly through the levels.

>What are the must play games for this system?
Here are the ones I have played which are, imho, the GOAT on the system:

- Sonic 1 & Chaos ( 2 is inferior but still okay )
- Golden Axe Warrior ( TLoZ clone )
- Time Soldiers ( better played with a buddy )
- Alex Kidd in Miracle World / Shinobi World ( avoid High Tech at any cost )
- Master of Darkness ( cool as fuck Castlevania clone )
- Wonder Boy In Monster Land
- Wonder Boy : Dragon's Trap
- Action Fighter
- Batman Returns
- Phantasy Star
- Golvellius
- Power Strike
- Ashura / Secret Command / Rambo First Blood Part Two ( same game with different names depending on the region )
- Kenseiden
- Asterix / & the Secret Mission ( avoid Great Rescue at any cost )
- Mickey Mouse : Castle / Land of Illusion
- Donald Duck : Lucky Dime Caper / Deep Duck Trouble ( Disney games were great at the time )
- Cyborg Hunter
- Shadow Dancer
- Fantasy Zone
- Zillion
- The Ninja
- Ninja Gaiden

The other good ones I'm note listing here are the ones which got a superior version on another system ( e.g . R-Type, Golden Axe, Moonwalker... ).

Man, 2 is the best. It's Chaos that is merely "okay", if that.

The first one is great and feels really ahead of it's time. It was released in 1987 and you got battles that look like this with partially animated backgrounds and enemies. The first person view in mazes is really smooth and engrossing too.

PS2-4 went with the usual top down mazes and the battles don't look nearly as good, until maybe you get back to PS4. They're all kinda grindy (again, save 4 maybe) but they're solid. My biggest problem is it's not intuitive what any of the spells do based on their names alone (like Nafoi being a fire attack, wth).

>how are the phantasy star games

1 is good. It's grindy at the beginning, but not all that much afterwards. If you only run from the fights where you're fucked you'll never need to grind for exp after you get rolling. The first-person mazes are cool, and the story is minimal. Suffers from somewhat poor translation, but the graphics and music are excellent, especially if you play the japanese version.

2 was an early game on the genesis, and it shows, especially in the overworld graphics and translation (by far the worst in the series). The gameplay is excellent. The battle animations are excellent. The music is excellent The story is excellent. The mazes range from somewhat difficult to very hard. It's got a much different tone than the first game, but it handles it really well.

3 is kind of the black sheep of the series - it's in a tangentially related setting with a lot of differences from the previous games. It suffered a lot from being rushed to completion. The graphics are kinda meh, and while the soundtrack is good, it's not used very well. The story is cool, though, and it's reasonably well-translated. The dungeons are fairly uninspired, though a few can still be challenging. It's also got some replay value with 4 different endings depending on who you marry, though by and large the endgame is the same no matter what. It's definitely worth playing, though, and I've had a lot of fun doing solo or cyborg runs through it.

4 is the shiny gem of the series - the game is full of flashy graphics, well-programmed music, cool gameplay features (battle macros and combos are the shit), a story that actually is paid attention during the game, and some sidequests that you can do for money (you are a bounty hunter, after all), along with a bunch of optional dungeons and tie-ins to the other three games.

On the other hand, the story is cliched (if well-executed), and the game is pretty easy (Raja is OP). None of the dungeons are terribly challenging, either.

>>2647885
the only thing I dislike in 4 is you don't get to see (or even play) how returning chars got better before the last dongeon.
