What game has the most obnoxious random battle encounter rate? I'm playing Lagrange Point and it's like every 5 seconds it's a new battle and it's sucking my will to live.

Pic related, it's how I feel toward random battles.

>> No.2645125

Tales of Phantasia (SNES)
Made especially obnoxious by the combat being in real-time, and thus slower than menu combat and running away requires walking against one end of the screen for 5 seconds or so. Fun.

The only time SoA really bothered be was when you have to sail against the current in the South Ocean. If you weren't prepared, the encounters would cause you to lose a bit of progress through the area making it take way longer than it should.

The sluggish, animation-heavy battles do not help this in the least.

>> No.2646124

Breath of Fire 1 and 2 were pretty high iirc, but I think the GBA ports fixed it a bit.

I don't understand why designers back then ramped it up so high. Double the enemies' HP and cut the encounters by half. It's the same end result but psychologically it's easier on the player.

>> No.2655601

>>2645125
For whichever reason, the encounter rate didn't bother me to much, maybe it's because a lot of the dungeons are kinda short.

Aside from the optional Moria dungeon of course. Like 50 floors with hardly any save points. I finished it once but on my second playthrough I died after a few dozen floors or so and couldn't be bothered.

>>2645127
Did they change the encounter rate in the GCN version? That's the only version I played and didn't have any problems.

>>2645561
Except here. Didn't help that a lot of the enemies have instant kill Eterni spells which target everyone iirc. Grinding until you can cast Lambda Burst at the start of an encounter helped.

I'm playing through FFIX now and the encounter rate is bothering me a lot. Battles are so slow with the camera panning around a bunch of rocks for half a minute every time. Later in the game a lot of enemies cause Heat and Doom too, which you can't do much against (although you can equip an immunity to Heat)

>> No.2657373

Not a retro example but I remember the Gamecube version of Mega Man X Command Mission and that Inuyasha game for the DS just having absolute bullshit encounter rates. Literally every 8 steps on average.

>> No.2658303

>>2645116
SMT I on SNES. You get an encounter every 3 steps or so. Keep in mind that more often then not the enemies get reinforcements so in most encounters you have to fight 2 battles or more. At least you can auto-battle most enemies after you get the nerve bullets.

>> No.2658965

>>2645127
Yeah this made it a shit JRPG. The encounter is obnoxiously high but if the battle started as smooth as in dragon quest for example it would be only half as shit. The real problem starts when you need to wait a minute till the battle starts and the fucking animations take tons of time too. What a shitty game.

>> No.2660727

far and away Phantasy Star II

>> No.2660836

I've always hated frequent battles. Even when running tabletop D&D games, I prefer there to be only 3 or 4 battles in an average 10 room dungeon. There's just so much more to dungeon crawling than combat encounters. Retro games were more than capable of making them more exciting.

I thought Arcana was pretty bad for frequent battles.

I remember 7th saga on the SNES being absolutely terrible. You had this orb in the corner of your screen with dots that move around randomly and if you touch one, you have to stop for a 1-2 minute fight. You'd be stopped basically every 6 or 7 steps. Still a great game, but the constant battles get old quick. Thank god I was playing on an emulator, otherwise I couldn't do it. It's easily a 50+ hour game

http://theromdepot.com/roms/?dir=SNES

You can get it there, along with pretty much any other game you could want too. Though it's annoying, it's still worth playing in my opinion. I can see why people were turned away though.
