I'm the OP. I finished Super Mario Brothers with just Save States and beginning of the Levels to even have a chance at finishing the game. I was so frustrated at levels 8-2 and 8-3 , it made me mad. So I finally cheated with more Save States in 8-4 to beat it because I was so full of this game. Now I want to play Lost Levels but it is even harder. ._. i consider replaying 8-4 without saving.

i tried to play megaman, also really hard. i also want to play zelda and final fantasy.

And yes, some NES games can be bullshit if you aren't willing to bonk your head on the wall like a 5 year old, or if the kids at your playground only give you unhelpful advice like "git gud". There should be a git gud wiki or something that lists all the little things you should know before playing a game, but could only discover through tedious trial and error (like the fact that there are no secret mushrooms on any levels but the first one of each world).

Nes games were designed for kids who'd only ever own one or two games, so the only way to get hours of gameplay out of a 120kb game was to make it frustratingly difficult.

The NES had about 700 titles.
About 100 are actually good, memorable, or interesting.

You also have to consider the era, battery saves were a new thing and costs money.
Unless you were making a game where it is absolutely important that you can save and load the game, such as a long RPG, the cost might not have been seen as justifiable by you publisher.

As for difficulty, that's inherited from Arcades, where machines were largely meant to suck up your quarters, as well as the popularity of rental games, if a game was really hard, they figured you'd rent it more, trying to beat it.

If a game isn't fun to you, well, why play it? There's great titles on the NES but they don't appeal to everyone by far.

Some don't like arcade games, some don't like really hard sidescrollers.
I recommend The Punisher, Kirby's Dreamland, and Dr. Mario (who is not a real doctor and you shouldn't let him touch your genitals).

If you're playing on an emulator, I recommend you get yourself a USB gamepad. It can just be a 15 dollar DualShock knockoff, it'll fly, it's a billion times better than playing on a keyboard.

The GBC was a bit overlooked as a handheld (at least it feels like it to me), but it had some fun games.

It has a pretty fun (and funny) Duke Nukem game styled after the original side-scrollers, I'd recommend that one.

There was also a Resident Evik game which was very cool and showcased some amazing gfx, sfx and music for the GBC, problem is, it's not actually a very good game, combat is really weird and finding items is cryptic. I'd just check out some let's play or something, just because it's such an interesting game (but it really takes a lot of dedication and adjustement to play it, most would get frustrated with the game and stop playing)

I heartily recommend you get Resident Evil 4 for either the PS2 or PS3 (this version has better resolution and since you save on a hard drive instead of a card, you have practically endless save slots). The game is pretty approachable on Easy, and once you have things figured out in regards to gameplay, taking on Normal mode is lots of fun, a good bit more challenging and also bigger levels.

Though that's not quite retro. Castlevania Symphony of the Night is another gem, for the PS1 (though also available on the PS3 through PSN).

Play the Disney Capcom games like Duck Tales, Darkwing Duck, Chip n Dale rescue rangers.
Play the NES Kirby game.

I switched, definately worth it for a lot of pre-analog stick games. Only takes a few minutes to setup the software. I used my 360 control for years until I tried out the ps3 controller on my buddies PC. No regrets.

I'm currently doing the same and I must say, NES games have a lot of bullshit in them. They're fun, don't get me wrong, but most of the triumph comes from an immense amount of trial and error.

I don't think it comes down to skill, as I have performed harder tasks and completed harder games than the average NES title. It's just that the simplicity of a lot of the games combined with some downright sloppy mechanics means that your main challenge is playing until you beat it. There's no intelligence involved there, so I hate when people bring that up. I'd go as far as to say it takes less skill to sit there and memorize every pixel of the game because that's your only hope of not dying. It stops being fun for a lot of people, but for oldfags it's just the way they're used to playing video games. I say this as someone who grew up in an NES household. It pains me to see people pull the "you just suck" card so much here, it's honestly cringeworthy.

You guys, some NES games are; even with save states; a pain in the ass, including some mario games!!! I guess us the younger generation is just accustomed to better gaming mechanisms. With NES it's like with a 3d program, you have to painfully learn and appreciate but then its fun and you can do great things with it. But the truth is most people today wouldn't bother making such nuisance for an old console, as there are newer more enjoyable games. But it's fun for a weekend or so.

Another thing I noticed is that newer games like Zelda Ocarina of Time on N64 are enjoyable with and without Save States. Even when you use Save States during the Boss Battles or in certain Areas the game is still very much enjoyable. Whereas the only fun in a lot of NES games is the challenge to not die and get to the ending of the level. Surviving the level gives you euphoria and fun. This counts even if you use only save states at the beginning of the level. Because no save states at all can turn Euphoria into Disphoria. But when you use constant save states at every corner in NES (not only in level beginnings) there is no fun, as there is no challenge and there is no euphoria when you finish a level.

So my final thought on this is, use save states wisely and but not too much, as when handled wisely, they can greatly improve the experience of older games while keeping the challenge, but taking the frustration of older game mechanics away.

I guess the Arcade Style type of gaming is just an outdated format for todays world, as gaming has evolved to more complex game mechanics. Just like people moved away from typewriting machine or modems. I'm not reading this thread because it looks horrible but I do have some advice for you OP. If you want to appreciate the history of gaming and have a good time doing it, but are having problems with a game as easy as SMB, you should start with more recent games and move backwards. Play SNES and gain some skills there, then you can try Genesis, and from there move back to either Master System or NES. You'll still have some understanding of context when you play through these games as long as you play enough of them and play the rigt ones, even out of order.

Oh, and don't ignore the history of pc games.

you guys, as you know i completed super mario 1 with just save states at the beginning of the level and multiple in the 8-4 because fuck that level. Now i fast played through mario lost levels to get that crap over with. i used tons of save states but still it was kinda hard at some spots. no save state could help me, as some levels got riddles in them, i had to look them up on youtube. ANWAY....now that this mess is over i am so happy and relieved. I started Super Mario 2 now and I must say this game is so much more fun than Super Mario and that Faggotry that is Lost Levels.
