I don't understand why American devs were unable to use anything but the default SID envelopes.

>> No.2627628

Flimbo's Quest, it is extremely under rated, but easily the smoothest platform game on the machine. Also the most console-like.

>>2627572
Because American devs did games as a job and nothing more, while Europeans did them as a hobby (that they made money out of).

It's rather astounding to compare C64 games from the beginning in 82-83 to ones released in the early 90s.

Americans did both, with a hobby scene that dwarfed Europe's as well as a commercial scene.

These are a handful I've played and liked. The C64's library is fucking huge, but its library of exclusives wasn't that big. Even the games on this list might be better played on other systems.

>Cybernoid series - flip-screen shooters known for their brutal difficulty.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7UoEqEbxra4

>Creatures series - these, Great Giana Sisters and Mayhem in Monsterland are pretty much all you're getting in terms of good Mario-style platformers.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDDkxfJCB9Y

>Wizball - I loved this game, but I could not tell you what the fuck it's about.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uK82X9VlE38

>Monty On The Run - Classic platformer in the style of Jet Set Willy. British as fuck, GOAT soundtrack. Make sure you look up the items for Monty's "freedom kit" online, or the game will be unplayable.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAyDCti2XAc

>Stunt Car Racer - 3D racer that plays like an early version of Trackmania. The camera's visceral reaction to hitting the ground makes the game hold up surprisingly well.

Noob question, what's the easiest way to remap keys? Last time I tried setting up an emulator my key bindings ended up looking like this: ctrl + o and ctrl + p to move up, ctrl + m and ctrl + n for left and right, etc. That's just unreasonably complicated.

I noticed that too, not to sound like a critic but most of my contact with c64 games were actually on the MSX. Sadly I missed out on those awesome chiptune soundtracks.

>> No.2628281

You have either PAL stuff which is mostly quirky shmups with badass soundtracks or NTSC stuff which looks and sounds a lot more sterile, but consists of bigger, slower-paced multiload games.

>> No.2628285

>>2628246
Observe that the best games are invariably PAL ones and not Murriburger rubbish.

>> No.2628291

C64 games in a lot of cases had problems with the music and game not meshing very well. This was because a lot of SID tracks were made by freelancing composers-for-hire which is quite unlike Famicom devs who had in-house musicians.

>>2628246
Cybernoid here is just such an example. Maniacs of Noise were some of the many British SID composers who simply did work for any programmers that were willing to pay.

>> No.2628294

Yuropoors did overdo it a bit with shmups, but then again it's not like American games were that diverse as the vast majority of them were CRPGs, adventures, sports, and war sims.

More importantly, in terms of taking the VIC/SID to the limit and making them do things that shouldn't even be possible. In the early days of emulation, Thalamus games wouldn't work at all because they utilized tricks like the Virtual Screen Position register for super-fast scrolling. Eventually emulators got good enough to cover some of the more obscure hardware features.

Way too many British games were generic shitty shmups that were just vehicles for some cool SID tune. Yes, we had too many dungeon crawlers on this side of the pond but at least they were real games and not a glorified tech demo.

>> No.2629047

I dunno bout how it went down in the US, but in Europe, the C64 games market was an absolute free-for-all!!

literally a pirate market. probably cause of a lot of us used cassette tapes as opposed to floppys, so we all just copied each others' games!! I don't know how the C64 did as well as it did in Europe considering how much flagrant piracy went on. it wasn't like it was only a small minority doing it either. Everyone was!!

The colours on a C64 are so simple that it actually doesn't even look bad on a modern TV, it upscales pretty well.

my TV didn't like my C64. had to switch it from digital to analog just so it would display. I got the picture (albeit a really shitty grainy one) but no volume

besides, my C64 was barely working at that point. most of my games wouldn't load or didn't work if they did, plus my QuickShot only moved left and down by the end. even the fire buttons didn't work
