Anyway OP, great game indeed. What is your favorite path? Did you know a group of fans are trying to remake it? Some screens look especially hideous to me, can't even put my finger on why. They're also probably going to butcher the god-tier synthesized soundtrack with some orchestra samples too.

Take a look:

http://remakeofatlantis.blog_spot.it/

I get they want to create a definitive version but I would've just left well enough alone. I also don't think the soundtrack would be performed well on an actual orchestra, since most of the tracks are purposely going for unrealistic effects to create music (like the drops in Knossos labyrinth or jungle sounds in Tikal). What I mean is, a competent director could try to replicate synthesized sounds by mixing various instruments to get different attacks and sustains, but it would eventually feel poor compared to the original I believe, best bet would be doing a partial recording and then mix the rest with synthesizers to try and get close to the perfect soundtrack. Also, which one would they try to replicate, MT-32 or Adlib? Because most tracks are totally reinterpreted in each version.

>>2612198
Definitely Adlib/OPL2. Although the music was composed on an MT-32, extra care went into making the OPL2 version sound the best, which often resulted in further developing the tracks or finding or finding their own soul/personality for that specific synth going as far to even change instruments, and what feelings the track originally conveyed.
MT-32, while good, sounds like an unfinished beta soundtrack in comparison. This also happened in Monkey2/DOTT, although in Monkey2's case the MT-32 soundtrack nails it so much it overshadows any improvements they made for the OPL2 tracks.

Am I the only person who HATED the intro I heard how amazing this game was long before I got around to playing it, I am a huge fan of the movies so I started up the game expecting the beginning of this epic adventure to be some sort of puzzle involving trilling high stakes adventure like disarming a bomb or escaping a crashing train, but no instead Indy falls from floor to floor like a Mr Bean sketch and yes I know it's point and click adventure game so you can't really do action sequences but I was at least expecting something like the start of broken sword 2 where you have to escape a burning house.

>> No.2612950

I see. Well, first of all I don't really like the CD soundtrack of MI1, since they inexplicably changed some notes/instruments and I'm not a fan of the synth they used to rerecord the soundtrack. It doesn't nearly hold up to the MT-32 original imo.

As for FOA, the way the music engine (iMuse) works would make mind-boggling any attempt at interactive tracks using CDDA, it won't ever work. You can achieve that nowadays by streaming digital tracks from the HDD, but there are some nuances which just can't be reproduced without using MIDI (as they also failed to do on MI2SE). iMuse was revolutionary for its time.

>> No.2613036

>>2612949
I didn't hate the intro, but I did find the tone in the first 1/3 of the game really offputting. I'm fine with comedy in these games, but it was too far in the realm of farce, with stuff like the scientist getting frozen in the ice and silliness in the jungle.

It gets much better once you choose your "path," and everything from the dig site in the desert onward is aces.

>> No.2613046

>>2613036
TLC was even worse in that regard I think. There's even talk and some evidence to believe that the recurring joke "Why are you wet?" and "Don't ask." were deleted scenes from the original script.

But what can I say, I'm all for a Threepwoody Indy, LucasArts decided to follow that path for most P&C adventure games.

Because Crystal Skull was supposed to be the second movie for decades but Lucas and Spielberg could never iron out the finer script details.

More complete scripts for Temple of Doom were started and Skull was put on the back burner, but returned to the forefront after Doom wrapped.

Once again, nothing became of it, Last Crusade got scripted, filmed and wrapped, and they pretty much mothballed it. When they finally got all the principles in place to make Skull, it was years later than they had intended.

A great deal of plot elements from Skull still retain aspects of being set immediately after Raiders even in the final product. Note that most of (maybe all of) the stupidity of that movie comes from the aspects of the movie that had to be changed from being set in 1937 to 1957.

No need to be this salty. We are only acknowledging the excellent art direction, which can be compared to any game regardless of its technological feats. While Infernal Machine had its own set of artistic touches by Bill Tiller (The Dig, CurseofMI), FOA had a way more characteristic color palette and sense of detail. I get these things were hard to get into 3D, but, although it looks dated, FOA aced its atmosphere so much you don't even care about pixel drooling because the backgrounds were so majestically composed. I don't really think it would, I mean, touch screens are iffy for a lot of things, but something like Fate Of Atlantis, basically the entire game can be played with the mouse alone, that's really easy to transition to a large touch-screen like a tablet with no real difficulties or problems.

I dunno, you lose the mouseover ability, and that's a pretty big part of scanning the screen and finding out what objects are and what's interactive even before you try to do anything. I guess you could just tap on everything in sight but that's more annoying than it is with a mouse, plus you lose the precision of knowing exactly what object you're pointing at. Seriousness is relative, I can't help but to crack up everytime some funny slapstick comes out of Indy and doesn't match his face. Same thing happened with Guybrush.

>they took out the fun bits like boxing

Boxing has been given new shape and it's a lot more exciting in FOA due to the music playing, what are you talking about?

>and made everything really soulless

It wasn't as cartoonish as the EGA version which is my favorite from TLC, but the use of color temperature was majestic.

>removing the swastickas

They didn't really butcher it like the German version of TLC, but they didn't change it too much, so Germany could get the same graphics.

>recolouring the nazis to look like, well, nobody

Nitpicky argument, since you only need to look at the clothing to guess they're nazis.

I enjoyed having an adventure three times longer (albeit more linear) than TLC with lots of more animation and (interactive) music. Please give the game some other chance. Maybe you just need to drop the voice acting.

Also, when I picked up the plunger, I expected at the least that Indy would make some smartass comment when you try to use it on the toilet chair.
He does when you just pick Use on the toilet.

What's your favorite inventory items?

I really like the food items, like the sandwich, and I really dig the wax cat because I just like the idea of Indy lugging around a big chunk of wax in his pocket for no reason.

The crab trapped in the ribcage is fun too, because it's actually animated and you'll see it snap with it's claws at you in your inventory.

I truly wished Spear of Destiny and Iron Phoenix got point and click adventure games. Great comics though and LucasArts was even working on Indiana Jones and the Spear of Destiny before it got axed because it would be nearly impossible to sell in Germany due to the huge P&C market there.
What with the storyline of Hitler being resurrected. Iron Phoenix was barely in the planning stages before it got axed.
To me in an alternate universe Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Spear of Destiny and Iron Phoenix were the 1990's Indy Jones sequel trilogy.

Germany fucked everyone again.

They also gave us the green blood in the Doom GBA ports, and gambling has been removed from western releases of Pokémon because of the fucking krauts.

There are a few gripes. Team mode, specifically.
The end part of the maze in Crete was a bit obtuse. How would you know to use the orichalcum detector? Maybe I'm just dumb.
The ending felt a bit padded with that bullshit try-every-door maze AND the stepping stones, and the final conversation took some experimenting.

Adventure games are for adults, platformers for kiddies. It has always been so.
