Not even talking about that bit near the end everyone loves bringing up. Just that opening sequence where you're with all your sea life buddies and then they suddenly get sucked up leaving only you there with really eerie music playing got to me hard when I rented Ecco at around five or six.

the entire game is a bit off, its not just the end.

People just bring up the endgame because its the most nightmare fuel shit, but its not like the rest of the game is a kids game, there is always something that doesn't seem right throughout the game.

It's surprisingly close to survival horror for a 16 bit game. Frequently being underwater, lost in caves and running out of air. Then in desperation you try swimming past an octopus a little too fast, get your shit slapped for it. Now half dead and nearly out of air, you dash at some fish to heal up a bit and it turns out to be a school of puffers. Pretty damn great from start to finish.

Shadow of the Beast was always a little disturbing to me. Something about the look of everything was weirdly creepy.

The story of EVO: The Search for Eden is that your some sort of ultimate life form that lives and evolves forever and has the goal of having sex with the personification of the Earth and usurping her father, the Sun.
There are also aliens who want to violate all your fellow life forms, the same ones that do nothing to sate your endless hunger but you devour them anyway.

Welcome to hell, anon.
But seriously you should put Recall at the start of every dungeon to easily escape and drop off loot.
DF isn't hard if you take advantage of the system, you can basically create a killing machine right off the bat if you know what you're doing with char creation.

But yeah the dungeons still spook the fuck out of me with those sounds and unexpected enemies, even when I've played the game snough to know how its generation works.
It's a fascinating game, the kind you must explore to find all the strange shit, even the internet won't tell you everything.

Seconding so hard.

I played this game as a kid and it literally gave me a phobia from caterpillars. Which is kind of dumb because they only look a bit like caterpillars in-game, while they're actually some sort of lizard thing with a mouth as portrayed here >>2623745. I never realized that this was actually supposed to be a picture of them because I wasn't very good at English either (and even worse, I actually played a ripped version that had no movies in it so even if I knew English, I wouldn't get the story anyhow).

Ohh it definitely is, no doubt. It's more the way that it unfolds. Most of the game to that point had been somewhat light hearted. Then you think you're about to rescue this princess, and the dungeon you're going through looks really strange. Most of the dungeon is taken up by all this weird organic stuff like pulsating masses of fat and tissue that you have to hack and slash through to get to her.

Then you make it to the top and realize that all that gross organic shit you were going through wasn't there to block your way getting to the princess, that it actually is the princess. It is pretty ridiculous, but the sudden change in tone was pretty creepy.

It's very unsettling. I remember a demo kiosk in some store with the game when it came out that had the part where the T-Rex head smashes through a wall or grate and attacks and it scared the shit out of me. Simple game, but it has a really unique atmosphere.

Abandoned buildings in Shadowrun always got under my skin. And deep sections of Saladshidder with hellhounds too. Believe it was the same composer as Jurassic Park as well.

Storms and monsters in the Sega version of New Horizons freaked me out and the entirety of The Simpsons arcade game I always found unsettling.

The entire game is "a bit off" indeed. The great thing is when you realise why.

It's one of those really subtle games where it doesn't beat you over the head with back story or anything- It's all there for you to pick up on for yourself, and your imagination fills in the blanks.

It has to be this way, because it's trying to invoke the feeling of deep thought and realisation of psychedelic drugs. It's easy to overlook, and I'm not just saying it to be all "hurr drugs" edgy, but ECCO is psychedelic as fuck.

The game was heavily inspired by the writings of John C. Lily- If you don't know him, he's the guy who basically dropped fucktons of LSD and ketamine and tried to communicate with dolphins. ECCO stands for "Earth Coincidence Control Entity", a cosmic presence he believed himself to be in touch with when he was tripping balls. The aliens? The totally unexplained undersea crystals you talk to? The level named after a Pink Floyd song?

That kinda unsettling ambient soundtrack and unsettling vibe the whole way through is no coincidence, ECCO the Dolphin is basically a bad trip in video game form.
