ITT: We talk about and recommend survival horror-esque games, preferably with tank controls.
>Resident Evil 1-3 and CV
>Silent Hill 1-3
>Alone in the Dark 4

I know there are Alone in the Dark 1-3 but oof I suck at the controls.

And I haven't played any Dino Crisis, how do they hold up compared to RE?

>> No.2618184

Deep Fear on the Saturn is great. I'd put it alongside the original Resi. Shame it wasn't released in NA and the PAL version is really expensive. Also the voice acting, good God - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iW5PpOH-O4o

1 is comparable to a top tier RE game.

2 is not survival horror, but an action game with tank controls. It's fun as shit.

ObsCure 1 is decent survival horror type game although it is devoid of tank controls. It's also co-op and best played with another human being. You got like a few characters with unique abilities but they can all die and they stay dead when killed so you get different endings depending on how many managed to survive to the ending. It captures the feeling of a horror B-movie pretty well.

ObsCure 2 is substantially more linear trash where anyone dying results in a Game Over so they can kill them off in a cutscene later. It's not great.

>> No.2618465

>>2618454
They're good but not Retro. Plus they're only really awesome if you take advantage of the co-op play which I'm guessing Stream lets you do online?

>>2618319
Another good lesser known example is Nocturne as well add the Blair Witch games. Try Deep Fear on Saturn. There's a ton on Playstation, Project Vampires, Galerians, and Martian Gothic off the top of my head. You might like the somewhat more arcadey offerings on Dreamcast like Overblood and Blue Stinger. There are some non retro indie games in the genre that are much newer, too.

Sort of.

You get random encounters like an RPG, but there are fountains scattered around in safe rooms where you can replenish your vitals, so initially, you would think no, this isn't survival horror, this is just a gothic-styled rpg.

Enemies can, in theory, be ground for item drops, but this is offset by the fact that every weapon your party can equip, even the Ultimate Dagger For Which You Must Do Several Special Things To Obtain, has a fixed and unknown number of uses before it becomes irreparably damaged. So in this sense, yes, it IS survival based because your resources typically dwindle down faster than you obtain them if you aren't playing smart, and could potentially leave your party naked, unarmed and lacking in restoratives, which is one of the basic design premises behind survival horror (as ill-defined as that term is).

I didn't definitely come down on either side of the survival horror coin here, anon. I merely presented two contrasting cases as to how you could, or could not, define it as survival horror.

And I certainly didn't state that "any game with consumables is survival horror," and I'm sorry if you took that to be my point. What I WAS saying is that it's entirely possible, and even probable, that if you treated this game as you would any other JRPG you would quickly find yourself devoid of restoratives, armor, and weapons - things in this game being only theoretically infinite but practically finite in number. Your typical survival horror game places all of items out and it's up to you to manage them properly - Koudelka is similar in this in that item drops from enemies are both uncommon and not particularly valuable most of the time. You won't usually find yourself carrying around 4 or 5 backup weapons like you do in Resident Evil - you live weapon to weapon for most of the game, never knowing if that gun you just picked up is good for 100 shots before it breaks, or 2.

Haven't played Dino crisis. Dino Crisis 2, as said by another anon, isn't quite the survival horror, but a mix between that and an action game.

First, you have high mobility, and can run and shoot at the same time.

The dinosaurs are pretty cool and the weapons have a real kick to them and are fun as fuck to use, even the smaller ones.

You gain money/credits by killing dinos and you use those to buy weapons, equipment and enhancements. This is where the game stops being a classic type survival horror, since in many areas the dinosaurs just respawn, leaving open the possibility of 'farming' credits.

What I like about Dino Crisis 2 is that it doesn't pretend to be a survival horror anyway, you just have to GO FAST, find keys and kill as much dino scum as you can, which is really damn satisfying because of really cool sounds and awesome blood effects.

There's also a coliseum mode where you can fight dinosaur battles.

Man I love Dino Crisis 2.

Sorry for my bad English.

I love this game. I'm a sucker for this kind of first person graphics on PS1, like Echo Night or ...Iru!
Also the main character is voiced by the same VA as Chris Redfield from RE1.

Only thing that sucked about the game was the rope "puzzle". That one spot you had to use the rope on... how was I supposed to know that?

>>2620474
Neither are survival horror and both are action j-rpgs (with a horror theme).
Tell me, what survival horror elements does PE1 have?
>3D models within 2D pre-rendered backgrounds
Even though this technic was created by survival horror, it does not equal to being survival horror. Plus, the way it's done in PE1 is closer to Final Fantasy VII than to Alone In The Dark or Resident Evil.
>literaly a couple of (simple) puzzles and keys to find
Like many other jRPGs. This is not enough to call it survival gameplay.
>Limited inventory
It's "limited" but actually quite huge, and many other jRPGs did that too. The limited inventory in PE1 is like FF4, not like Resident Evil.

PE2 is more hybrid and takes a little more from survival horror, but it's still quite far from it and nothing other than an action j-rpg with some hybrid elements.

>>2620417
I like Deep Fear, if only it wasn't so damn easy... the survival gameplay elements are so dubbed down, which is a shame because it has tons of good ideas. Like for instance management of air, good idea on paper, but in execution you're NEVER going to run out. Not even close.

>>2621147

I tried to get into this one. I really tried. It's absolutely fucking boring. They replaced the entire skill based gameplay system by RPG stats and level bullshit. There is a fuckton of shitty characters. It's full of endless terribly written "story". The level design is super bland.
They ruined the franchise.

Now I'm not even against the type of game this one was trying to be, see for instance I absolutely love Castlevania Curse Of Darkness, which is exactly the same type of game, except actually well done.

I liked the sequel alot despite non-/vr/. They had the balls to kill off the main girl and also the hero, twice.

He seems to believe survival horror is a synonym to "Alone In The Dark clones", as he says CT isn't survival horror but Parasite Eve 2 and Onimusha are, while it's the contrary.

In fact AITD clones was only a short period of the genre, for instance first person survival horror have existed for a longer time (and nowadays the majority of the genre and the most famous survival horror games are first person). Pic related, Zombi by Ubisoft, you probably all know its reboot on WiiU.

Never heard of this one. Neat. Wish I had a Dreamcast, though.

Parasite Eve decided to be clever in a way that they could use camera centric controls instead of character centric (tank) controls. No exit leads you to a wildly different camera angle One could argue that makes Parasite Eve's environments bland, but the result is that you don't get disoriented when switching to a different pregen background. This makes camera centric controls viable and it is why you saw this in a lot of RPGs.

Parastie Eve 2 has character centric controls, though.

Hellnight is honestly my favorite horror game. It's one of only two games to ever get my heart pumping Maybe me recommending that game over and over and over again on here actually worked on somebody
