It makes me so sad what happened to SNK. They made such amazing games, and King of Fighters was the best fighting game around for many years. Then they dumped all their money into the Neo CD and Neo Pocket, which were cool but doomed the company to be bought by Pachinko makers.

Now there's just a sad corpse left of what was once a great company and Playmore poops out ass ugly garbage like KoF XII and XIII.

I've decided that I have to accept that there are people who are okay with XIII because otherwise the arguing never stops. But boy ohh boy do I disagree with you. Both gameplay and aesthetics wise it looks looking nothing like King of Fighters at all to me at this point. Look at Athena and Yuri here... gone is the cool stylish realistic look the games used to have. Now they look like sickeningly over the top moe fap bait. Also that you had to pay for DLC out of the box to get a colour scheme for Athena that looked even close to her normal ones made me rage. I say good riddance.

There were apsects of the combo system that I didn't like and the controls in general felt strange. More like Gulity Gear than traditional King of Fighters. But also that said, I only played the game for about a week before my disappointment in the game outweighed the price I paid for it and never touched it after that.

I still have all the old ones, and I like playing with a Dreamcast pad the most anyways so it's not a huge deal. But it just makes me sad that it's another old franchise I used to love, but the new entries in it are completely different from the games I enjoyed in the first place.

Not that guy, but I don't like how Athena was somewhat moefied starting from 2002 with those huge eyes either. Many of the new NESTS characters looked stupid enough by their own, but then big eyes Athena was the beggining of the end for the aesthetics of legacy characters. They did the same to Yuri in 2003, but it's even more offputing because many of her animations still have the old face.

They also forgot the "martial artist" aspect of the character and went too heavy with the pop star part. Earlier designs mashed both aspects perfectly and that's why she was so cool, pic related.

Honestly, I can't describe it very well because I played the game for maybe a week at most before never touching it again and that was like five years ago now.

By far the biggest thing was the change in character designs. I really liked the look of the older games, where people were exaggerated but still proportioned more or less realistically.

The new designs really do look to me like they took Falcoon's fan art and made that the basis for the actual sprites. I actually like his work, but I don't think the style fits when put in the game. Not just the female characters either, I don't like that Ralph, Takuma etc are now cartoonishly massive. I fully cop to that being my extreme pickiness about aesthetics, but I love the look of the older games and hated the look of this one. It's my bad for just buying it blind and not even looking at screenshots.


So all that said I went into the actual game with a bad taste in my mouth. But something still felt just off somehow. The cancels felt weird and a few other things like that. Had I liked the way the game looked I might have stuck with it, I'm quite fond of 2000 and 2001 even though they're not generally liked. But I didn't, and I'm the type of person who only keeps playing a game if I really love it so that was the end for me.

It's all good though because two years later, Netherealm who's games I'd never been too fond of released a superhero themed fighter that ended up near perfect for all my weirdo tastes and keeps the fighting games part of my brain happy to this day.

Yeah its sad where games in general are right now and the Japanese devs are only making "bankable" games. When Megaman isn't bankable to Capcom and Inafune has to leave to make a new one, they are circling the drain. Especially after 9 and 10 were pretty big successes. I still enjoy SF4 it's a pretty deep fighting game and I think 5 will be good as long as they don't fuck up the charge characters like they are toying with and making them all motion inputs. that being said, there's a ton of shit about 13 that bugs me stylistically (everyone who had a hint of muscles before looks like they're the physical incarnation of steroids now)

They are all good and play different enough from each other to be worth checking out. 1 is a bit slow but its still a good introduction to the series. 2 is considered the best by some, 3 is decent it added some new mechanics removed some moves and changed things up a bit the art style was a bit darker, 4 adds some characters back in that were removed like jubei :'( and the art is back to the earlier style. 5 I dont know much about but 5 special is considered one of the best. I havent played much of it though.

'Murica, Scandinavia and the EU will. Alot of the Japanese guys like inafune, Igataki and the other expats from the big Japanese developers, are heading out of Japan to find people interested in making real games. They are working with teams comprised of like minded guys from all over the world, instead of just the same Japanese ones. Alot of developers love the retro gaming movements in the USA and the UK and they keep getting bigger. We really support the shit out of indie development and crowd funding, so it's kind of like a new horizon for gaming. Hell there are new game systems in the works to play 16 bit style games. As for SNK, I think the Chinese might be good for them, they love some KOF and not the new ones. KOF '99 is still huge in China. I think maybe we will see some new games coming out of SNK and not just "collection" type shit we have been getting served from playmore. Honestly any new game is better than no new games. I know Last Blade was big in China and I've been waiting for LB3 for along time.

when SNK went bankrupt, Sega was in a hilariously awful financial state

at no point did it make sense for Sega to buy SNK -- early on, Sega's arcade efforts were much more impressive than SNK's games
later on, during KOF's popularity, Sega was busy trying to not hemorrhage money, the whole 1995-2002 period was completely awful for them financially.

Personally XI is a favorite KOF but in hindsight they should have stuck with the non-tag 3v3 format. Also the combo system on that I find was nuts. I loved it.

Chinese Manhua, most likely by Andy Seto or probably the dudes who made the Another/Maniac Strikers (also from China). I've only actually read the one for KOF 2002 and some of the older ones, particularly 99 where Kyo runs around in his underwear looking for clothes in the NESTS lab.

Hard to say:

* Shinkiro's stuff can get a little samey at times, but putting together the definitive Geese portrait, as well as several slice-of-life pictures for many characters (the stuff from Fatal Fury Special, and occasional stuff like Heidern teaching Leona to shoot) added a lot to the world developed in the games.

* Hiroaki's stuff has a really nice roughness to it - his takes on the characters make it a lot easier to imagine the characters getting into fights

* Senri Kita IIRC did the most of the Last Blade illustrations, and those really fit the game's tone of being a more elegant, subtle experience when compared to the "louder" Samurai Shodown

* Ogura's stuff is plain solid an a worthy follow-up to the artists above that defined the look for SNK's games - I'd like to see him handle stuff being portraits, maybe more slice of life stuff, assuming SNKP manages to put some budget aside for that.
