Well, it's a huge flat screen CRT. They're deeper and heavier than curved screens and they suffer distortion at the corners especially on huge ones like that. On the plus side, they do suffer less glare and (corners excluded) offer correct geometry from a wider viewing angle. It's also much easier in the USA to find consumer WEGAs with Component/YPbPr input.

Honestly, when it comes to giant CRTs I prefer Mitsubishi.

the clockwork angels tour was only so-so. Geddys voice was very strained and the setlist could have been better. still a very memorable show.

The R40 tour however had it all. Geddys voice had a year+ off so he sounded amazing. The setlist had alot of songs from the 70s era which is my favorite. They did the songs in reverse chronological order and ended with an encore of songs from the first 3 albums. Their best show ive ever seen.

Because it offers the best possible picture quality.
Unlike an LCD screen, it has scanlines and wont look like jagged shit.
A classic "bubble" screen warps the image, and the only advantage that LCD has is less chance of burn in, but there are CRTVs that have measures against that.
I owned an Apex flat screen CRTV and games look much better on that than on an LCD.
Of course, I wasn't using an upscaler on my LCD though.

Wait you can't tell from the picture which is which? Maybe I cropped them or maybe they're both a Framemeister?

6/10. Walls are way too cluttered, but I like your controller bookshelf on the left - it's a shame the one right isn't as neatly ordered. I really admire your collection, very nice presentation apart from the shelves underneath your TV. I appreciate the lounge and cool looking audio monitor as well, though I have to ask - are you a bhuddist and is that shelf on the bottom in your second picture all boxed PC games? Also that glass stand just doesn't quite fit that place in the room - at least from what I have seen, consider rearranging.
>>2604548
3/10. Good collection, but the presentation is dirty, awful and basically represents a den of a eternal virginity. Those pseudo-N64 boxes dropped a point or two alone. Get yourself a CRT. Consider yourself lucky I don't give you a 2 or worse for having that Retron in there.
>>2604606
6/10 Nice consoles, is that a white Saturn? I like your orange 64. You lose points for no CRT and having a redundant amount of consoles on display - if they were on your shelf I'd forgive it, but they're setup under your TV.
>>2604756
7/10. Looks very comfy, your gameboy collection is amazing. The only issues I have with it are non-retro vidya related, liked your carpet and the corrugated iron wall thing behind your TV. The superscope up on that shelf is a nice touch.

>>2605030
8/10. Nice cabinets, shelves, and walls. Please do something about the carpet and those hideous blinds though, it's a shame that they spoil an otherwise near-perfect setup. You also really need a CRT, and to move that white heater thing if it's portable.

What constitutes an HD CRT exactly? Anything that does 720 or higher?

I was picking one up like that this weekend from some friends of family who don't want it anymore, a wega trinitron, because my current mid-2000s CRT won't do 480p. Is that big-ass TV I'm going to get not so good of a pickup anymore?

wrong.
SD CRT TVs only do 240p/480i.

if you want 240p/480i AND 480p (and up to 1080i) you'll need a multiformat PVM, like the L5 line, or multiformat BVM like the D24/32
there are other models that can do multiformat, google.

good luck finding one bigger than 24 for less than the cost of a house.

if it does 480p then it upscales 240p/480i to 480p and thus will be shitty for retro 240p games.

One more question about the big-ass HD CRT, if you do letterbox widescreen on a TV like that, and it's given a 480p signal, then is it still displaying a 480p image, or will it be scaled somehow to make it widescreen format?

I play enough 6th gen games that it might still be worth having, but it not being widescreen would be a dealbreaker I think.

I don't mean to be mean or rude, but I think it just starts to look sloppy. Maybe its just that theres no normalization between the consoles, and the colours clash and when everything's hooked up it just becomes a haphazard mess of cables and managing power bars.

Mine setup is currently very similar to a lot of yours and it just reinforces my thinking.

I'm currently renovating, and I'm honestly considering just having 1 console hooked up at a time.

Then having the consoles stored away in boxes that I'd make that would be like Gun Cases. Wooden boxes (MDF probably) lined with foam inserts with cut outs so that the console, controllers, and cables all fit nicely away. Then its easy to just put them inside their box, then inside a hollow coffee table or line them on shelves and have minimal clutter. Then just having one dedicated power outlet and AV hookup spot that you swap out.

Maybe I'm just developing OCD. I'm really starting to hate clutter. Its not even like, wanting to offload my collection, its just I want my room to be clean and look sharp.

I'll go get a blog instead of rambling. I do think that the individual console cases idea is probably something I will do in the future though since I have lost controllers and cords and shit just from things getting unhooked and left around.

That said, I guess having all consoles hooked up at the same time increased the time I actually play games. I just have to start the system and there we go. If I had them all stored away I would probably be too demotivated to hook everything up just to play a game. So having them all hooked up isn't only about looks or showing off, but also about actual convenience

How about... your ideals?

Layouts, mockups, wall paint colours, floor type, furniture, end tables, media unit, shelving, storage solutions, etc.

Could we build the perfect games room?

I think my ideal would be:
>Neutral, tones, browns and taupe type stuff
>3 seater couch or recliner, brown (I feel black is often too dark, and brown is usually warmer)
>End tables on either side
>Maybe a mini fridge of some kind for cold drinks
>Large TV (If HDTV, wall mounted, if CRT, with matching stand)
>cable management through the wall behind the TV and the media center
>One or two consoles hooked up. Cables all concealed.
>Cart games in UGC in a slim shelf, organized by console release date, then in alphabetical order (IE: NES A-Z, SNES A-Z, N64 A-Z, Genesis A-Z)
>Any large awkward items (fight sticks, NES advantage) concealed in a well organized shelving unit with doors to conceal it

Depends. If you missed out on some PS3 games theres some good remasters or the "next-gen" versions.

I enjoy Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor a lot despite it being very Assassins Creed/Batman Arkham style. Tomb Raider definitive edition is great. Assassins Creed Unity is alright now that its bene patched, but if you've played any AC its the same shit.

Infamous Second son is alright, but the MC is a faggot.

Bloodborne and Dark Souls 2: SotFS edition are decent. BB is not as good as the -souls games. Dark Souls 2: SotFS is nice because its different enemy layouts from standard and comes with all the DLC so if you didnt buy the DLC its a nice investment,

Natural Doctrine is a kinda neat little strategy game thats actually kind of difficult.

Lords of the Fallen is pretty shit and just avoid it.

Havent touched Killzone Shadow fall yet.

Evil Within wasn't my cup of tea but I didn't get too far in it either.

Last of us was kinda neat, I didnt buy into the hype but played it cause it came with my PS4.

HD REmake is nice because it looks really good, and RE2 remake is no doubt going to be on it.

Stuff I'm looking forward to/trying to get: MGS5, Dark Souls 3, Deception 4: Nightmare Princess, Arkham Knight, Order 1886 (once its like sub 15) Uncharted 4 (despite uncharted bieng kinda shitty games, theyre a fun romp) Alien Isolation, Just Cause 3, Deep Down (if ite ver comes out) and MAYBE Last Guardian (if it ever comes out)

I find this funny because I take this approach to movies, but not to games.

Movies on physical media seems absolutely pants on head retarded to me. VHS tapes have huge problems, DVD's just take up too much space, Blu-Ray while it looks good, again takes up too much physical space.

You can get a HDD in a computer and store literally thousands of movies and TV shows, and the quality is equivalent to Blu-ray.

I can't do this with games though. I know that objectively I could have the entire SNES library on an emulator, but its just not the same.

Yify rips are not the same as real blu-ray. Blu-ray files are huge, like everything from 10-30 GB. If you're going to hoard blu-ray movies on your HDD you're gonna run out of space soon.

Might as well ask here instead of making a new thread:

What would you guys recommend for a good starter console to collect for?

Atari 2600, Genesis, PS2 are all pretty cheap.

>> No.2616581

>>2616534
If you're going to buy carts or discs then you really can't "win" as there is no console thats inherently cheaper anymore, outside of like PS3-360-Wii (last gen) since those are way more plenitiful.

Honestly, OP. If you're into like the PS2 era I would recommend checking out the OG Xbox... I'll probably get a lot of hate for this, but its got a lot of decent multi-plats that got released across all 3 platforms, and they're usually inherently cheaper then its GC/PS2 counterparts. It also has some good exclusives like Panzer Dragoon Orta, Gunvalkyrie, Ninja Gaiden Black (although this got ported to PS3 and 360 I think), Otogi and Otogi 2, Jet Set Radio Future, Voodoo Vince and the standard Halo and what not. It also has Steel Battalion, which is really cool and fun, but really hard game. Definitely under valued console. Its also easy as fuck to mod for emulators and shit if you're into that.

Otherwise just go with what looks appealing. NES is nice and theres still a lot of "shit" games for it that you can pick up for cheap. Hell, even a lot of the decent to good games are cheap. You can pickup Faxanadu commonly for 5 bucks, and its one of my favorites. But expect to pay a premium for anything recognizable. Its easily the console thats hit the hardest with "Rare". Anything Megaman, Mario, etc, is going to hit you pretty hard.

Pretty sure SNES is all around expensive these days. Even the bad games are going for a premium, especially if they had an AVGN episode about them (like Lester the Unlikely).

N64 is kind of hit or miss. There is a huge ratio of garbage to good, and even then the good isonly arguably good. I would say a handful of good games.

Best option for playing games on original hardware is and will always be to get a flashcart/modded system. Its got a high up front cost but when you're talking about a flash cart being the same as a single game, then you know its a great option.

Kallax is pretty popular. You can buy several different sizes as well as optional cabinet/drawer/bin inserts.

The large Billy bookcases are popular for storing games, but a smaller one (pic related) could house just the systems reasonably well (you can buy additional shelf planks beyond what's provided). Squeezing in more than four might be pushing it, but you could buy a larger size (they also sell expansions for this size). You'd have to cut out your own holes for the cords, though.

No problem. I just compared the dimensions of the Saturn against the shelving; taking the cords into account, it would likely jut out a little bit when resting on a shelf. You should just go for the ps4 if you really like physically copies of games. However, get the rest down the road. The Xbox One isn't THAT bad, but I feel the ps4 just is better overall. Wii u is a purchase you should make when the console is almost on its way out. PC however is the best way to play your games. >hoarding cardboard
I never got this.

A box has no intrinsic value. Its purely for collectors to "brag" about having "CiB" systems.

I'll never understand it.

I tend to border on "collector" myself at times, but I never buy games I have no interest in, and will get rid of stuff that I realistically will never play.

That being said I bought the only copy of Steel Battalion that was on my local CL. Its CiB. I've strongly considered throwing out the box, but for god knows why I've been hanging onto it. Its huge as fuck, and its in pretty terrible shape.

I think I may just fucking get rid of it today.

i just moved in, so this is not the final setup, the wii has yet to settle in for example.
also i dont have the room for a crt anymore, which is too bad cause i saw a nice panasonic sitting in the street a few days ago.
also i found the xbox in the street about two weeks ago, aquired a controler and a few games since, its actually a pretty nice machine.

and the kitchenconsole is not even worth mentioning yet, i still need to find a fitting rack and figure out a proper way to tilt the screen. its hooked up to one of those 10 in one atari things right now, but the setup will change every now and then, i'm already in the process of aquiring a few coop games for snes, also, why is probotector so expensive ;_;
again, i found this small crt in the street a few days ago, it still smells of the little burger joint that threw it out.

Not that guy, but to an extent none of this shit has serious value, esepcially not games that have been dumped and spread on the internet. They're outdated electronics housed in plastic, only valunable to people who like them or othe rise have memores of them. It just depends on what people like. Some like the boxes and some dont. I fully understand people who view them as garbage, and those of us who like them think they're neat to have or look at.

OG Xbox is highly underrated. Some fucking great games on it (Ninja Gaiden Black, Gun Valkyrie, Panzer Dragoon Orta, etc). That being said, its the fucking biggest motherfucking console ever made.

or they like the way it looks... In this case, it's lined around the top of the walls on a shelf as decoration - not really taking up space like "hoarding" would suggest.

Some people like the look of boxes. I'm not that guy, but I definitely like how some of them look. A Rockman Famicom cart looks alright, but the box looks awesome to me. It is all old junk to many people and only holds serious value for enthusiasts. As a kid I hung on to a lot of my boxes and manuals if I got them with the game, though I didn't always take the best care of them.

They all look like trash though. Displaying them like that especially.

They aren't cool hard plastic or metal cases. They aren't anything special. They are literally cardboard, designed to be thrown out.

The only reason I could fathom keeping them is so you can resell your shit for more money later .

neat opinion
>They are literally [just] cardboard
If you ignore the art printed on them sure. I guess you don't understand why some people "hoard" canvases and paper either. If you don't like the art, that's also a neat opinion.
>The only reason I could fathom keeping them is so you can resell your shit for more money later.
... or they just disagree with your opinion and like the way it looks :o
Even if that were true, though, what would be wrong with that? People get bored of their toys eventually. If you have the space (which he does), why throw away something people are willing to pay for?

Time will tell if I think my room ends up too claustrophobic.

wii for 5th gen and earlier

softmodded ps2 for /vr/ ports (and fightan)

RGB scart for the playstations, sadly the scart cable I got for my wii is all kinds of fucked.

These Plastic tubs were on sale at Home Depot for like 1.50 or some shit.

Fits everything nicely. A surprsing amount of stuff. The NES Bin has my toploader, 2 NES advantage, 2 regular controllers, 2 dogbones and the standard hookups. The SNES Bin has my console, 2 SNES Advantage, 2 SNES controllers, and the rest of the standard hookups. The Wii Tub holds a lot of shit, Wii console, sensor bar, 4 remotes, 2 pro controllers, 1 nunchuck, 4 wavebirds, 2 memory cards, the stand, standard hookups, and a component cable. The xbox bin fits an xbox (barely)its hookups and controllers. Sega CDX is just the console hookups 1 six button and 1 3 button controller.

Everything that can be is bagged in ziplock bags for no cable mess and further dust protection and potentially flood protection in a worst case scenario.

I think its good. It'll be easy enough to swap out a console, and will all remain clean and well organized.

I'm quite happy with the decision to bin things not currently in use. Cleans up the media unit quite a bit, and with my crt on my desk a single console at a time is more then enough.
